CHAPTER 9: THE INHERITANCE THAT BELONGED TO A CHILD

Nobody moved.

Not even the guards.

Because the man standing in the doorway was supposed to be impossible.

Daniel Voss.

The dead man.

The traitor.

The ghost who had haunted the Kavanaugh family for seven years.

Yet there he was.

Standing in the rain.

Alive.

And smiling.

Renick Kavanaugh held the document tightly.

His knuckles turned white.

"What did you mean?"

Daniel looked at him.

"The boy is the inheritance."

Renick stepped forward.

"Explain."

Daniel glanced around the room.

At Belle.

At Micah's empty bed.

At the document in Renick's hand.

Then he said something nobody expected.

"Not here."

Renick's expression darkened.

"You don't give orders in my house."

Daniel looked at him calmly.

"Seven years ago, you thought this was your house."

A pause.

"You were wrong."

The guards immediately raised their weapons.

Belle reacted.

"Stop!"

Everyone looked at her.

Because fear was obvious in her voice.

Not fear for herself.

Fear for Micah.

Daniel noticed.

And for the first time...

His expression softened.

"He really is just like you."

Belle frowned.

"What?"

Daniel looked at Renick.

"He protects people before himself."

The room became silent.

Because everyone knew.

Daniel was talking about Micah.

Twenty minutes later, they gathered inside the old library.

The same room where generations of Kavanaugh secrets had been stored.

Renick stood across from Daniel.

No trust.

No forgiveness.

Only questions.

"You disappeared."

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

"You let everyone believe you were dead."

"Yes."

"You let me hate you."

A pause.

"Yes."

Renick's jaw tightened.

"Why?"

Daniel looked down.

And for the first time, the man who always seemed untouchable looked tired.

"Because if you knew I was alive..."

He looked toward Belle.

"And if Alexander knew where Belle was..."

His voice lowered.

"Micah would not have survived."

The name changed the atmosphere.

Because every person in the room understood one thing.

This had never been about money.

It had never been about power.

It had always been about a child.

Daniel placed an old folder on the table.

"The night Micah was born, your father left instructions."

Renick stared.

"My father?"

Daniel nodded.

"He knew something was coming."

"What?"

"A war."

Daniel opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

Old records.

Handwritten notes.

Photographs.

"The Kavanaugh family fortune was never supposed to belong to one person."

Renick frowned.

"Then who?"

Daniel looked at him.

"A guardian."

Silence.

"Your father created a system."

Daniel continued.

"A system where the wealth, companies, and assets would be protected until the rightful heir reached adulthood."

Renick looked confused.

"And who is the heir?"

Daniel didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

Everyone already knew.

Their eyes moved toward Micah's empty room.

Belle finally spoke.

"I don't understand."

Daniel looked at her.

"Your son is the heir."

She shook her head.

"No."

"Yes."

"That doesn't make sense."

Daniel looked at her sadly.

"Belle, do you remember the night you gave birth?"

Her face changed.

A memory.

A hospital room.

A storm outside.

A baby crying.

And a man standing in the doorway.

Daniel.

But there was something else.

Something she had forgotten.

A second person.

Someone who arrived before him.

Someone who made her sign documents while she was exhausted and terrified.

Belle whispered:

"Alexander."

Daniel nodded.

"He was there."

Renick's expression changed.

"My brother?"

Daniel looked at him.

"Your brother knew before anyone."

"Knew what?"

"That Micah existed."

The room became cold.

"He knew about the inheritance."

Seven years ago...

Alexander Kavanaugh discovered the truth.

The old family agreement.

The hidden inheritance.

The condition.

The heir would not be chosen by blood alone.

The heir would be chosen by the person who carried the family's greatest value.

Compassion.

Integrity.

The ability to protect others.

Alexander hated it.

Because he believed power belonged to those strong enough to take it.

Not a child.

Not someone innocent.

Especially not Daniel Voss's son.

So he made a decision.

Erase the heir.

Before anyone knew his name.

Present day.

Renick stared at Daniel.

"You're saying my brother tried to kill a newborn?"

Daniel didn't answer.

Because the answer was obvious.

Belle covered her mouth.

All those years...

The fear.

The running.

The hiding.

It wasn't because Daniel was hunting them.

It was because Alexander was.

Suddenly, the library lights flickered.

Everyone turned.

The security alarm activated.

Marcus rushed in.

"Sir!"

Renick looked up.

"What happened?"

His face was pale.

"We found Micah."

Belle immediately stood.

"Where?"

Marcus hesitated.

"In the west garden."

Everyone rushed outside.

Rain poured over the estate.

And there...

Under the old oak tree...

Was Micah.

Standing alone.

Holding something.

Belle ran toward him.

"Micah!"

The boy turned.

His face was calm.

Too calm.

She grabbed him.

"Are you hurt?"

"No."

"Who took you?"

Micah looked confused.

"Nobody."

Renick approached.

"Then why did you leave?"

Micah looked at the object in his hand.

A small black key.

"I found this."

Daniel froze.

Because he recognized it.

A key he had not seen in seven years.

A key that belonged to one place.

A place that officially did not exist.

"Where did you get that?"

Micah pointed toward the forest behind the estate.

"Someone left it there."

Renick stared.

"Who?"

Micah looked toward the trees.

Then whispered:

"The man who said he was my grandfather."

Everyone froze.

Belle grabbed Micah's hand.

"Micah..."

But the boy continued.

"He said he was sorry."

Daniel's face turned pale.

Because there was only one man who could say that.

One man who had the right.

One man who was supposed to be dead.

Micah looked at Daniel.

"He said..."

A pause.

"He said you lied about why you disappeared."

Daniel stepped forward.

"Who was he?"

Micah answered:

"Your father."

Silence.

The rain became louder.

Because everyone understood the impossible.

Daniel Voss had returned.

Alexander Kavanaugh had returned.

And now...

A third ghost from the past had appeared.

The man who started everything.

May you like

The man who knew the truth about Micah's birth.

And the man who had been dead for twenty years.
