CHAPTER 15: THE WOMAN WHO KNEW THE TRUTH

The woman stood at the entrance of the vault.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone was trying to convince themselves that what they were seeing was impossible.

Renick Kavanaugh stared at her.

The woman who had disappeared decades ago.

The woman whose death had been accepted by the entire family.

The woman whose name had been erased from countless records.

His mother.

Victoria Kavanaugh.

Alive.

Her hair was silver now.

Her face carried the marks of years hidden away from the world.

But her eyes...

Her eyes were exactly the same.

Cold.

Intelligent.

Unforgiving.

The eyes of someone who had spent a lifetime knowing secrets other people would kill to discover.

"Mother..."

Renick barely managed to say the word.

Victoria smiled faintly.

"I wondered how long it would take you."

Nobody understood.

Except Victoria.

She looked at the room.

At Daniel.

At Marcus.

At Elena.

Then finally...

At Micah.

"There he is."

Micah instinctively stepped closer to Belle.

Belle immediately placed a hand on his shoulder.

A silent warning.

Stay behind me.

Victoria noticed.

And smiled.

"Still protecting him."

Belle's eyes narrowed.

"Stay away from my son."

Victoria tilted her head.

"Your son?"

A small laugh escaped her.

"That is the first lie everyone told."

The room became tense.

Daniel stepped forward.

"Enough games."

Victoria looked at him.

"Daniel Voss."

Her expression changed slightly.

"Still pretending you are the hero."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"You disappeared."

"Yes."

"You let everyone believe you were dead."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Victoria looked at Micah.

"Because I was waiting for him."

Everyone froze.

Micah.

Again.

Everything returned to him.

Every secret.

Every war.

Every betrayal.

All connected to a seven-year-old boy.

Renick stepped between them.

"You don't get to walk back into my life and speak in riddles."

Victoria looked at him.

"You still think this is about you."

The words struck him.

Because they sounded exactly like Edward.

"You became exactly what your father feared."

Renick's face hardened.

"Don't talk about him."

"Why?"

A pause.

"Because you finally discovered he was right?"

Silence.

Victoria walked deeper into the vault.

She touched the old documents.

"Edward understood something none of you did."

She looked at Micah.

"Power does not reveal who you are."

"It reveals who you already were."

Micah stared.

He didn't understand.

But he felt something.

Everyone was talking about the future.

The inheritance.

The family.

The empire.

But nobody was talking about him.

Belle stepped forward.

"Why did you want Micah?"

Victoria looked at her.

"I didn't."

Everyone reacted.

"What?"

Victoria smiled.

"I wanted to know if he was truly the heir."

Daniel frowned.

"Then why did someone try to kill him?"

"Because someone wanted to control the inheritance."

"Who?"

Victoria looked around the room.

At every person.

Then stopped.

"The person who benefited the most if Micah disappeared."

Silence.

Everyone looked at Renick.

Then Daniel.

Then Marcus.

Victoria shook her head.

"You still don't understand."

She walked toward the center table.

"The inheritance was never money."

She placed her hand on the old documents.

"The inheritance was a decision."

Renick frowned.

"What decision?"

Victoria looked at Micah.

"Who would lead the family after everything collapsed."

Belle's face changed.

"You mean..."

Victoria nodded.

"Edward knew the Kavanaugh empire was already rotten."

She looked at Renick.

"He knew Alexander wanted power."

She looked at Daniel.

"He knew you wanted revenge."

Then she looked at Micah.

"And he knew a child might be the only person who could break the cycle."

Suddenly, Daniel stepped back.

Everyone noticed.

Belle looked at him.

"What?"

Daniel stared at Victoria.

"You knew."

Victoria didn't answer.

"You knew about Micah from the beginning."

A pause.

"Yes."

Daniel's voice became colder.

"How?"

Victoria looked at him.

"Because Edward told me."

The room went silent.

Daniel looked shocked.

"Edward?"

Victoria nodded.

"He knew you and Belle would have a child."

Belle froze.

"How could he know?"

Victoria looked at her.

"Because he had been watching Daniel."

Daniel's expression changed.

"Why?"

Victoria answered:

"Because Edward knew you were the only person who could save the family."

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"Save it?"

A pause.

"He destroyed my life."

Victoria looked at him.

"No."

Her voice became sharp.

"He sacrificed your life."

Nobody spoke.

Then Victoria revealed the truth.

The explosion seven years ago.

The betrayal.

The disappearance.

None of it happened the way they believed.

Daniel was never the target.

Belle was never the target.

Even Micah was not the target.

The real target...

Was the evidence.

The evidence Edward left behind.

Evidence proving someone inside the Kavanaugh family had been stealing from the empire for decades.

Someone who had been hiding in plain sight.

Someone who had manipulated Alexander.

Someone who had controlled Marcus.

Someone who had pushed every person into the position they were in.

Renick looked at Victoria.

"Who?"

Victoria didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she looked at Micah.

"Do you remember the man who came to you?"

Micah nodded.

"The man who said he was my grandfather."

Victoria's expression softened.

"That was Edward."

Renick froze.

"Impossible."

Victoria ignored him.

"Before he died, Edward discovered the truth."

She looked at the old letter.

"He knew he couldn't trust anyone."

"Not even his own family."

Then Victoria said the words that made everyone freeze:

"The person who betrayed the Kavanaugh family..."

"Was not Alexander."

"Was not Daniel."

"Was not Marcus."

A pause.

"It was someone who was never suspected."

The vault lights flickered.

A phone began ringing.

Everyone looked around.

Nobody moved.

Because the phone was coming from inside the old documents.

Victoria reached down.

She picked it up.

The screen showed one name.

EDWARD KAVANAUGH.

A dead man's phone.

A phone that had not existed for twenty years.

Victoria answered.

For several seconds, nobody heard anything.

Then her face changed.

The color disappeared.

"What?"

Everyone stared.

"Who is it?"

Victoria slowly lowered the phone.

Her voice was almost a whisper.

"Edward."

Silence.

"He's alive."

Nobody breathed.

Because if Edward Kavanaugh was alive...

Then everything they knew was a lie.

May you like

And the man who started this entire war...

Had been watching them the entire time.
