CHAPTER 6: THE MAN BEHIND THE SHADOW

Micah did not scream.

That was the first thing that surprised Daniel Voss.

Most children would have.

Most children would have run.

They would have called for their mother.

But Micah only stood there in the dark hallway, holding the photograph tightly in his small hand.

Watching.

Waiting.

The same way he had watched the little girl hanging from the balcony.

The same way he had looked at danger before.

Not fearless.

Just trying to understand it.

The man standing at the end of the hallway slowly stepped into the light.

For seven years, Belle Ashford believed this face belonged only to memories.

To nightmares.

To a past she had escaped.

But now...

Daniel Voss was standing inside the Kavanaugh estate.

Alive.

Older.

Different.

But unmistakably him.

"Micah."

His voice was softer than expected.

Almost kind.

That was what scared Micah the most.

Because his mother had always told him something.

The most dangerous people were not always the ones who looked frightening.

Sometimes they were the ones who made you feel safe.

Micah took one step back.

"Are you my father?"

Daniel stopped.

For a moment, something flashed in his eyes.

Pride.

Pain.

Possession.

"Yes."

The answer came immediately.

Too quickly.

Micah looked down at the photograph.

"Why did you leave?"

Daniel's expression changed.

A small crack appeared in the perfect mask.

"I didn't leave."

He stepped closer.

"Your mother took you away from me."

Micah frowned.

"My mom said you were dangerous."

Daniel smiled sadly.

"Did she?"

A pause.

"Your mother has spent seven years teaching you to fear me."

Micah said nothing.

Because he didn't know who to believe.

And that frightened him.

"Micah!"

Belle's voice echoed through the hallway.

Daniel looked toward the sound.

For the first time, his expression became cold.

Not angry.

Not surprised.

Just disappointed.

"She always finds you."

Micah didn't understand.

"What?"

Daniel looked back at him.

"Nothing."

Then he reached into his coat.

Micah immediately stepped back.

But Daniel didn't pull out a weapon.

He pulled out something else.

A small wooden box.

Old.

Damaged.

Almost forgotten.

"This belonged to you."

Micah stared.

"To me?"

Daniel nodded.

"Your mother kept you away from everything connected to me."

He placed the box on the floor.

"But she couldn't erase your blood."

Before Micah could answer, footsteps approached.

Daniel stepped backward into the shadows.

"Ask your mother what happened on the night you were born."

Micah looked up.

"Wait."

Daniel smiled.

"One day, you'll understand why I came back."

Then he disappeared.

Seconds later, Belle arrived.

She saw Micah.

Safe.

Alive.

But the look on his face told her everything.

She knew.

He had met him.

The moment Belle saw the empty hallway, she knew.

Her worst fear had happened.

"Where is he?"

Micah didn't answer.

Belle walked closer.

"Micah."

The boy looked at her.

"Was he really bad?"

That question stopped her.

Because she expected anger.

She expected fear.

She expected a thousand questions.

She never expected that.

A child didn't want to know if someone was powerful.

He wanted to know if someone was good.

Belle knelt.

"Micah..."

"Did he hurt people?"

Her silence was enough.

Micah looked away.

"But he says you lied."

Belle felt her chest tighten.

"I did lie."

Micah looked at her.

The honesty shocked him.

"I lied because I wanted to protect you."

"From what?"

Belle looked toward the dark hallway.

"From the truth."

The next morning, Renick Kavanaugh made a decision.

A decision nobody expected.

He called Belle into his office.

No guards.

No security.

No accusations.

Just two people sitting across from each other.

Two parents trying to protect children.

"I need answers."

Belle nodded.

"I know."

"Not because I want to punish you."

She looked surprised.

"Then why?"

Renick looked out the window.

"Because my daughter almost died."

A pause.

"And your son saved her."

His voice softened slightly.

"I owe him the truth."

Belle looked down.

For the first time, she saw something different in Renick.

Not the billionaire.

Not the businessman.

A father.

"I need to know everything about Daniel Voss."

Belle closed her eyes.

Then she began.

Daniel Voss had not always been an enemy.

Years ago, he and Renick Kavanaugh were partners.

Brothers in everything except blood.

They built businesses together.

They trusted each other.

Until one discovery changed everything.

Daniel found evidence of a secret project hidden by the Kavanaugh family.

A project involving illegal financial deals.

A project that could destroy everything Renick had built.

But before Daniel exposed it...

Someone tried to kill him.

The explosion that supposedly took his life was not an accident.

Someone wanted him gone.

And Belle was the only witness.

Renick listened carefully.

"Who tried to kill him?"

Belle hesitated.

"I don't know."

"Think."

She looked at him.

"The person who wanted Daniel dead..."

Her voice lowered.

"Is the same person who wants Micah now."

Renick's expression changed.

"What does Micah have?"

Belle looked terrified.

"The truth."

Hours later, Renick received another message.

This time, it wasn't from Daniel.

It was from an unknown number.

A single picture.

Micah standing in the hallway.

Taken moments after meeting Daniel.

Renick stared at the image.

Then he noticed something.

Behind Micah...

A second person.

Someone hidden in the shadows.

Someone who had been there the entire time.

He enlarged the image.

His blood ran cold.

Because he recognized the face.

A person who was supposed to be dead.

A person whose funeral Renick himself attended seven years ago.

He whispered the name.

"No..."

Marcus looked over.

"Sir?"

Renick couldn't take his eyes off the screen.

"Impossible."

"Who is it?"

Renick slowly answered:

"The person who started this war."

A pause.

"The person who betrayed us both."

The image remained on the screen.

And underneath it was a message.

YOU LOOKED FOR THE WRONG MAN.

DANIEL WAS NEVER THE ENEMY.

That night, Belle entered Micah's room.

She expected him to be asleep.

But he wasn't.

He was sitting by the window.

Holding the wooden box Daniel had left.

"Micah..."

He turned around.

"Mom."

She sat beside him.

"What is it?"

He opened the box.

Inside was something neither of them expected.

An old hospital bracelet.

A bracelet from the night he was born.

Belle's face changed instantly.

Because she recognized it.

And underneath the bracelet was a name.

Not Micah Ashford.

Not Daniel Voss.

A different name.

A name that should never have existed.

Micah looked at his mother.

"Who am I?"

Belle couldn't answer.

Because for seven years...

She had protected him from the world.

May you like

But now she realized something terrifying.

She had been protecting the world from the truth about him.
