CHAPTER 3: THE SECRET BELLE BURIED FOR SEVEN YEARS

The envelope was still lying on the floor.

Nobody touched it.

Nobody breathed.

Belle Ashford stared at the words written across the photograph.

HE KNOWS YOUR SECRET.

Four simple words.

Four words that dragged her back seven years into a past she had spent every day trying to forget.

Her hands began to shake.

Not because someone had threatened her.

Not because someone had entered the most secure house in Boston.

But because she knew exactly who wrote those words.

And if he was truly alive...

Then everything she had done to protect Micah had been meaningless.

"Mom?"

Micah's sleepy voice came from behind her.

Belle turned instantly.

The fear disappeared from her face.

She couldn't let him see.

Not now.

"You're awake."

The boy looked at the envelope.

"What's that?"

Belle moved quickly, picking it up before he could see the message.

"Nothing."

Micah studied her.

He was only seven years old.

But sometimes Belle forgot that.

Because Micah noticed things adults ignored.

A shaking hand.

A fake smile.

A voice that was too calm.

"Mom."

She looked at him.

"Yes?"

"You're scared."

Belle froze.

For a moment, she didn't know how to answer.

Then she forced a smile.

"I'm just tired."

Micah didn't believe her.

But he didn't argue.

That was another thing about him.

He knew when people were lying.

He just didn't always know why.

Across the mansion, Renick Kavanaugh was having the same problem.

He hated unanswered questions.

And right now, he had too many.

Who disabled the cameras?

Who was standing behind Belle?

Who pushed Brinley?

And why did a seven-year-old boy know something his entire security team missed?

The last question bothered him the most.

Renick stood in his private office, looking at the photograph from the balcony.

Micah.

A child with no power.

No money.

No protection.

Yet somehow, that child had changed everything.

The door opened.

Marcus Vale entered.

"We found something."

Renick turned.

"What?"

"The camera footage from the east hallway wasn't deleted."

Marcus placed a tablet on the desk.

"It was replaced."

Renick's eyes narrowed.

"Replaced?"

"Someone inserted a fake recording."

That meant one thing.

The person responsible wasn't an outsider.

They understood the Kavanaugh security system.

They had access.

They knew exactly how the estate worked.

"Who has that level of clearance?"

Marcus hesitated.

"Only twelve people."

"Names."

Marcus handed him the list.

Renick scanned it.

Security directors.

Executives.

Family members.

Then he stopped.

One name.

A name he hadn't seen in years.

Daniel Voss.

His expression changed.

"Impossible."

Marcus looked at him.

"You know him?"

Renick stared at the name.

"Daniel Voss died seven years ago."

Seven years ago.

Belle remembered that year differently.

Everyone else remembered the headlines.

The business war.

The explosion.

The disappearance.

But Belle remembered something else.

The blood.

The screaming.

The promise she made.

She had been twenty-four years old.

Young.

Poor.

Invisible.

Working inside the Kavanaugh estate as a temporary maid.

That was when she met Daniel Voss.

He was not supposed to be dangerous.

That was the mistake everyone made.

People always imagined dangerous men looked dangerous.

Daniel didn't.

He smiled.

He spoke softly.

He helped old employees carry boxes.

He remembered everyone's birthdays.

He was the kind of person people trusted.

Until they discovered what he really was.

A man who had spent years hiding behind kindness.

A man who wanted the Kavanaugh empire.

And a man who discovered something that could destroy Renick forever.

The night everything happened, Belle found Daniel in the private archives.

She wasn't supposed to be there.

Neither was he.

She saw the documents in his hands.

Documents about Renick.

Documents about a secret transaction.

Documents that explained why someone wanted the Kavanaugh family destroyed.

Daniel saw her.

And that was the moment Belle's life changed.

Because Daniel didn't kill her.

He did something worse.

He made her choose.

Protect herself...

Or protect a child who wasn't even born yet.

"Mom?"

Belle snapped back to reality.

Micah was standing in front of her.

The photograph was still hidden behind her back.

"You know him."

Belle went completely still.

"What?"

Micah pointed toward the hallway.

"The man outside."

Her heart stopped.

"What man?"

"The one who left the picture."

The room became colder.

Belle looked toward the door.

"Micah..."

"He's been watching us."

Her blood turned cold.

"When?"

The boy looked confused.

"Since yesterday."

Belle grabbed his shoulders.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Micah lowered his eyes.

"Because you looked scared."

That answer hurt.

Because it was true.

Her son had been protecting her.

A seven-year-old child had been carrying a secret because he didn't want to frighten his mother.

Belle pulled him into her arms.

"I'm sorry."

Micah hugged her back.

But before she could say anything else...

The lights went out.

The entire mansion fell into darkness.

A second later, the emergency alarm started screaming.

Red lights flashed through the hallway.

Then every screen in the house turned on.

Security monitors.

Televisions.

Tablets.

Every device connected to the Kavanaugh system.

A single message appeared.

YOU SHOULD HAVE LET THE GIRL FALL.

Everyone froze.

Renick saw it from his office.

Belle saw it from the hallway.

And Micah...

Micah saw something else.

A figure reflected in the black screen.

Standing behind him.

The same figure from the balcony.

The boy slowly turned around.

But there was nobody there.

Then a voice came through the speakers.

A voice that made Belle's entire body freeze.

A voice she hadn't heard in seven years.

"Hello, Belle."

Her face went pale.

Because the voice continued.

"Did you really think you could hide my son forever?"

The world stopped.

Renick heard it.

The guards heard it.

Everyone in the mansion heard it.

But only Belle understood the meaning.

Only she knew what those words meant.

Because the secret she buried seven years ago...

Was not about money.

Was not about the Kavanaugh family.

It was about Micah.

May you like

And the man speaking through the speakers...

Was claiming to be his father.
