CHAPTER 7: THE CHILD WHO WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO EXIST

The bracelet was small.
Almost meaningless.
A piece of plastic that most people would have thrown away after leaving the hospital.
But to Belle Ashford...
It was a bomb waiting seven years to explode.
She stared at the name printed on it.
Her lips parted.
No words came out.
Because she had spent seven years running from that name.
Seven years pretending it never existed.
Seven years protecting Micah from a truth she believed would destroy him.
But now the truth was sitting in his hands.
Her son's hands.
"Mom."
Micah's voice pulled her back.
"Why isn't my name on it?"
Belle looked at him.
The question was simple.
But the answer was not.
Because the truth was something she had buried deeper than any secret.
She reached for the bracelet.
Micah pulled it back slightly.
Not out of anger.
Out of fear.
A fear Belle had never seen in him before.
"Don't take it."
Her heart broke.
"Micah..."
"I want to know."
Seven years old.
But his voice carried the weight of someone much older.
"I deserve to know."
Belle closed her eyes.
Because he was right.
She had protected him.
But maybe she had protected him for too long.
Across the mansion, Renick Kavanaugh stood in front of a locked room.
The old archive.
A place he had avoided for seven years.
The place where everything began.
Marcus stood behind him.
"Are you sure?"
Renick didn't answer.
He unlocked the door.
The moment it opened, the smell of old paper and dust filled the hallway.
Inside were thousands of documents.
Business records.
Contracts.
Personal files.
Secrets.
The things powerful people buried when they thought nobody would ever find them.
Renick walked toward a shelf at the back.
There was one file missing.
The Micah Ashford file.
But something else was gone too.
A second file.
Marcus noticed.
"Sir?"
Renick looked at him.
"What?"
"There should be another folder there."
"Which one?"
Marcus checked the records.
Then his face changed.
"The Voss investigation."
Silence.
Renick stared at the empty space.
The investigation into Daniel's death.
The investigation he personally ordered.
The investigation that proved Daniel Voss was dead.
But now...
The evidence was missing.
"Someone didn't steal Micah's file."
Renick's voice was quiet.
"They stole the reason Daniel disappeared."
Meanwhile, Belle finally told Micah the first part of the truth.
Not all of it.
Not yet.
She wasn't ready.
But enough.
"Your father and I knew each other before you were born."
Micah listened carefully.
"Was he nice?"
Belle looked down.
That question hurt.
Because the answer was complicated.
"Yes."
A pause.
"And no."
Micah frowned.
"How can someone be both?"
Belle gave a sad smile.
"Because people are not always one thing."
She touched his hair.
"Your father loved you."
Micah looked surprised.
"He did?"
"More than anything."
"Then why did he leave?"
Belle's eyes filled with memories.
"Because sometimes love isn't enough to stop people from making terrible choices."
Micah looked at the bracelet.
"Was I the reason?"
Belle immediately shook her head.
"No."
Her voice became stronger.
"Never think that."
She held his face.
"Nothing that happened was your fault."
Micah looked away.
But Belle saw it.
The fear.
The confusion.
The question he was too afraid to ask.
"Do I have something wrong with me?"
Belle froze.
"What?"
"Everyone is fighting because of me."
Her heart shattered.
Because that was the burden he had been carrying.
A child thinking he was the problem.
"No."
She pulled him into her arms.
"You are not a problem."
"But..."
"Micah."
She held him tighter.
"You saved a little girl because you are kind."
A pause.
"Not because of your father."
"Not because of your blood."
"Because of you."
For the first time that night...
Micah cried.
Not loudly.
Not like a child throwing a tantrum.
Just silent tears.
The kind that came from holding too much inside for too long.
At midnight, Renick received another message.
This time, there was no picture.
Only an audio file.
He pressed play.
A familiar voice filled the room.
Daniel Voss.
"If you're hearing this, Renick, then you finally found the archive."
Renick froze.
The recording continued.
"I know what you're thinking."
"You think I came back to destroy you."
A pause.
"But you are wrong."
The voice became quieter.
"I came back because someone else has been controlling everything from the beginning."
Renick leaned closer.
"Seven years ago, the explosion wasn't meant for me."
Silence.
Then Daniel said the words that changed everything.
"It was meant for Belle."
Renick's eyes widened.
The recording continued.
"And the person who ordered it..."
A pause.
"The person who wanted Micah erased before he was even born..."
The audio became distorted.
Then one final sentence played.
A sentence that made Renick stand completely still.
"Was someone inside your family."
The recording ended.
At that exact moment, the power went out again.
The mansion disappeared into darkness.
But this time...
Nobody panicked.
Because everyone knew.
This was not an accident.
Someone wanted their attention.
Emergency lights turned on.
Red shadows filled the hallway.
Then every security screen activated.
A live video appeared.
A man sitting in a dark room.
His face hidden.
His voice calm.
"Renick."
Everyone gathered around the screens.
Belle appeared.
Micah stood beside her.
The man continued.
"You spent seven years looking for Daniel."
A quiet laugh.
"You should have looked closer to home."
Renick stepped forward.
"Who are you?"
The man slowly raised his head.
The screen became clearer.
Belle gasped.
Her hand covered her mouth.
Because she knew him.
Renick knew him.
Everyone knew him.
A man who had been trusted.
A man who had stood beside the Kavanaugh family for years.
A man whose death had been announced seven years ago.
The screen showed his face.
And the message below appeared:
THE FIRST BETRAYAL WAS INSIDE YOUR HOUSE.
Renick whispered his name.
"Alexander..."
The man smiled.
"Hello, brother."
The screen went black.
And for the first time...
May you like
Renick Kavanaugh realized the enemy he feared most was never outside his walls.
It had been living with him all along.
