CHAPTER 12: THE MAN EVERYONE TRUSTED

The letter was only one page.

One page.

Yet it carried enough weight to destroy everything they believed.

DO NOT TRUST RENICK KAVANAUGH.

Nobody spoke.

The garden was silent except for the sound of rain falling through the trees.

Renick stared at the words.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Just shocked.

Because there was one thing he had always believed.

He was the man who protected his family.

The man who kept enemies away.

The man who controlled every threat before it reached his door.

But now...

He was the threat someone had warned them about.

Belle looked between Daniel and Renick.

She didn't know what to believe anymore.

Too many secrets.

Too many lies.

Too many people who had claimed to be protecting them.

"Renick."

Daniel's voice was quiet.

But dangerous.

Renick looked at him.

"Say it."

Daniel didn't move.

"Say what?"

"That you didn't know about the children."

A long silence.

Then Renick answered.

"I didn't."

Daniel studied him.

"You expect us to believe that?"

Renick looked at the letter.

Then at Micah's bedroom window.

"I don't expect anyone to believe anything anymore."

The honesty surprised everyone.

Because Renick Kavanaugh had spent his entire life building walls.

And tonight...

Those walls were collapsing.

They brought Elena inside.

The moment she entered the mansion, Micah noticed her.

He stood at the top of the stairs.

Looking at the girl who carried the same impossible secret.

Brinley looked between them.

"Are you related?"

Nobody answered.

Because nobody knew how to explain it.

Elena looked at Micah.

For several seconds, they simply stared at each other.

Two children.

Two strangers.

Connected by a war they never started.

Then Elena said:

"You're the one from the news."

Micah tilted his head.

"What news?"

"The boy who saved the billionaire's daughter."

Micah looked embarrassed.

"I just helped her."

Elena studied him.

"That's what my mother said you would do."

Micah frowned.

"Your mother knew me?"

Elena looked away.

"She knew you before you were born."

The sentence made everyone freeze.

Inside the library, the adults continued their investigation.

Marcus placed a stack of documents on the table.

"We found something."

Renick looked up.

"What?"

"The inheritance wasn't created because of Micah."

Daniel frowned.

"Then why?"

Marcus opened the file.

"It was created because Edward Kavanaugh discovered someone would try to destroy the family from within."

Belle looked at the documents.

"So he knew."

Marcus nodded.

"He knew someone close to him would betray him."

Renick stared.

"Then why didn't he stop them?"

Marcus hesitated.

"Because he didn't know who it was."

Silence.

That was the most terrifying possibility.

Edward knew there was a traitor.

But he didn't know the traitor's identity.

Meaning anyone could be responsible.

Anyone.

Later that night, Renick found Micah sitting alone in the hallway.

The boy was holding the wooden box.

The same box Daniel had given him.

Renick sat beside him.

For once, he didn't look like a billionaire.

Just a tired man.

"You're not afraid of me?"

Micah looked at him.

"No."

"Why?"

The boy thought for a moment.

"Because you saved Brinley."

Renick looked surprised.

"That's enough?"

Micah nodded.

"People who save people aren't bad."

Renick looked away.

That sentence hurt.

Because Micah judged people by what they did.

Not what others claimed.

"Micah."

"Yes?"

"Do you remember the night you were born?"

The boy shook his head.

"No."

Renick was quiet.

"Do you remember anything strange?"

Micah thought.

Then slowly nodded.

"Maybe."

"What?"

"I remember a voice."

Renick turned.

"A voice?"

Micah looked at the floor.

"Someone was crying."

A pause.

"Not me."

Renick frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"I don't know."

Micah touched the wooden box.

"But I remember someone saying..."

His voice became softer.

"Don't let them take the child."

Renick felt a chill.

"Who said that?"

Micah looked up.

"I don't know."

Then he added:

"But it wasn't my mom."

At 3:00 a.m., the mansion security system activated.

Again.

But this time, there was no message.

No warning.

No threat.

Only one camera feed appeared.

A hospital room.

Old footage.

Seven years ago.

Belle watched from the control room.

Her face slowly lost color.

Because she recognized the room.

The hospital where Micah was born.

Renick looked at Daniel.

"Where did this come from?"

Daniel didn't answer.

Everyone watched.

On the screen, a younger Belle lay exhausted in the hospital bed.

A newborn baby was in her arms.

Micah.

Then the door opened.

Someone entered.

A man.

Nobody could see his face.

But everyone recognized the voice.

A voice from the past.

The man spoke.

"Give me the child."

Belle on the screen shook her head.

"No."

The man stepped closer.

"You don't understand what he is."

The camera moved.

The man's face became clearer.

And everyone froze.

Because the person standing beside newborn Micah...

Was not Daniel.

Was not Alexander.

Was not Renick.

It was someone else.

Someone who had been protecting the Kavanaugh family for years.

Someone who had stood beside Renick during every crisis.

Someone everyone trusted.

Marcus Vale.

The security chief.

Present-day Marcus stepped back.

"No..."

Nobody looked at him.

They only watched the screen.

The younger Marcus reached toward baby Micah.

And the recording ended.

The room became silent.

Renick slowly turned.

"Marcus."

The security chief's face was pale.

"Sir..."

Renick's voice was cold.

"Tell me why you were there the night my son was born."

Marcus didn't answer.

And that silence was enough.

May you like

Because the person who protected the Kavanaugh estate for seven years...

May have been the person who started the war.
