CHAPTER 11: THE OTHER HEIR

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Edward Kavanaugh's voice was gone.

But his final words remained.

"Micah is not the only heir."

The underground vault felt colder than before.

Not because of the temperature.

Because everyone understood what those words meant.

There was another child.

Another person connected to the Kavanaugh legacy.

Another person who could change everything.

Renick slowly lowered the recording device.

"No."

Daniel looked at him.

"You knew?"

Renick's eyes hardened.

"Knew what?"

"That there was another heir."

Renick stepped closer.

"If I knew, do you think I would be standing here asking questions?"

Daniel studied his face.

For the first time, he believed him.

Because Renick Kavanaugh was many things.

Proud.

Controlling.

Difficult.

But he was not a good liar.

Not when it involved his family.

"Then Edward hid it from everyone."

Belle looked at the letter.

"Why?"

Nobody answered.

Because the answer was obvious.

If there was another heir...

Someone had a reason to hide them.

They searched the vault for hours.

Documents.

Photographs.

Records.

Every piece of the Kavanaugh family history was there.

Except one thing.

The identity of the second heir.

The most important information was missing.

Someone had removed it.

Not recently.

Years ago.

Marcus held the empty folder.

"Someone knew this would be discovered."

Renick looked at him.

"Meaning?"

"The missing information wasn't stolen after Edward died."

Marcus paused.

"It was removed while he was still alive."

Silence.

That changed everything.

Because it meant Edward Kavanaugh knew someone inside the family was betraying him.

And instead of exposing them...

He hid the truth.

Back upstairs, Micah sat quietly in the living room.

He watched everyone move around him.

Adults talking.

Adults searching.

Adults worrying.

But nobody explained anything.

Again.

He looked at Brinley.

"Do you think they are scared of me?"

Brinley frowned.

"No."

"They are."

She thought for a moment.

"Maybe they are scared of what happens if they lose you."

Micah looked at her.

"What's the difference?"

Brinley didn't answer.

Because she didn't know.

Children weren't supposed to carry questions like that.

They were supposed to worry about school.

Games.

Toys.

Not inheritances.

Not assassins.

Not family wars.

At midnight, Belle found Daniel alone outside.

He stood in the garden, staring at the mansion.

"You knew."

Daniel didn't turn.

"I knew what?"

"About the inheritance."

A pause.

"Yes."

Belle stepped closer.

"Then why didn't you tell me?"

Daniel finally looked at her.

"Because if you knew, you would become a target."

"I already was."

His expression changed.

"Exactly."

Belle stared.

"You disappeared."

"I had to."

"You left me alone."

"I was trying to keep you alive."

Her eyes filled with anger.

"Do you know what it was like?"

Daniel looked away.

"Every day I wondered if someone would find us."

A pause.

"Every night I wondered if I made the wrong choice."

Belle's voice softened slightly.

"You did."

Daniel looked at her.

"What?"

"You chose the secret over us."

The words hit him.

Because they were true.

For seven years, Daniel had protected a mystery.

But he had lost seven years with his son.

Before he could answer...

A sound came from the trees.

Both turned.

Someone was watching.

Daniel moved instantly.

He stepped in front of Belle.

A figure appeared between the trees.

Not attacking.

Just standing there.

A child.

A girl.

About the same age as Micah.

Belle froze.

Because the girl looked familiar.

Too familiar.

"Who are you?"

The girl didn't answer.

Instead, she held out a photograph.

Daniel took it.

The moment he saw it...

His entire body went still.

Belle noticed.

"What is it?"

Daniel slowly turned the photograph around.

It showed two babies.

Two newborn children.

One was Micah.

The other...

A little girl.

On the back of the photo were two words.

SECOND HEIR.

The girl finally spoke.

"My mother told me not to come here."

Nobody moved.

"She said the Kavanaugh family destroys everyone it touches."

Belle looked at her.

"What is your name?"

The girl hesitated.

Then whispered:

"Elena."

Daniel stared.

Because he knew that name.

Impossible.

But he knew.

"Elena..."

The girl looked at him.

"You know me?"

Daniel took a step back.

"No."

His voice broke slightly.

"I knew your mother."

Belle noticed something.

Fear.

Real fear.

Not the fear of danger.

The fear of a memory returning.

"Who was your mother?"

The girl looked at Daniel.

Then said:

"Her name was Clara Voss."

Daniel froze.

Because Clara Voss was not just anyone.

She was his sister.

The woman everyone believed died before Micah was born.

The woman who knew every secret Daniel had.

The woman who disappeared the same night he did.

Belle looked confused.

"Daniel?"

He didn't answer.

He couldn't.

Because the impossible had happened again.

First, Alexander returned.

Then Edward.

And now...

Another Voss.

Another heir.

Another child.

Daniel finally whispered:

"Clara never had a daughter."

Elena's expression changed.

"That's what they wanted you to believe."

A cold wind passed through the garden.

Then she handed Daniel another envelope.

"This is from my mother."

Daniel opened it.

Inside was a single sentence.

Written seven years ago.

Protect the two children. The enemy is not the family. The enemy is the person controlling them.

Daniel's face turned pale.

Because he recognized the handwriting.

Clara's.

But there was one more line.

One final warning.

A warning that changed everything.

Do not trust Renick Kavanaugh.

Everyone froze.

Belle looked at Renick.

Daniel looked at Renick.

And Renick himself stared at the letter.

Because for the first time...

A new possibility appeared.

Maybe Alexander was not the only traitor.

May you like

Maybe the person they trusted most...

Was the person they should fear.
