CHAPTER 10: THE GRANDFATHER WHO NEVER DIED

The rain continued falling over the Kavanaugh estate.
Heavy.
Cold.
Relentless.
But nobody noticed.
Because every person standing in the garden was trapped by the same impossible thought.
A dead man had spoken to Micah.
Not a stranger.
Not an enemy.
Not someone hiding in the shadows.
A member of the Kavanaugh family.
The man who had been buried twenty years ago.
The man whose name was removed from every official document.
The man whose disappearance created the foundation of Renick Kavanaugh's empire.
Edward Kavanaugh.
The founder.
The father.
The ghost.
"That is impossible."
Renick said the words quietly.
But nobody believed them.
Not even him.
Daniel stared at the small black key in Micah's hand.
His face had lost all color.
"Where exactly did you find this?"
Micah pointed toward the forest.
"Near the old trees."
Daniel looked toward the darkness.
And for the first time since returning...
He looked afraid.
Belle noticed.
"What is it?"
Daniel didn't answer.
Renick stepped closer.
"Daniel."
A long silence.
Then Daniel whispered:
"The underground vault."
Marcus frowned.
"The estate doesn't have an underground vault."
Daniel looked at him.
"That's what everyone was supposed to believe."
The Kavanaugh family had always been famous for one thing.
Power.
But power was never created by money alone.
It was created by secrets.
And the oldest secret of the Kavanaugh family was hidden beneath the land itself.
A place built by Edward Kavanaugh.
A place only three people were ever supposed to know about.
Edward.
Renick.
And Alexander.
Daniel was never supposed to know.
Which meant one thing.
Someone had told him.
And that someone was still alive.
Inside the mansion, Micah sat wrapped in a blanket.
Brinley sat beside him.
She hadn't said much since they found him.
But she refused to leave.
"You weren't scared?"
Micah looked at her.
"When?"
"When you followed the person into the forest."
Micah thought about it.
"Yes."
Brinley blinked.
"But you went anyway?"
Micah nodded.
"Why?"
Micah looked down.
"Because he knew my name."
Brinley became quiet.
Children understood things adults often forgot.
A child didn't follow danger because they were brave.
Sometimes they followed because they wanted answers.
In the library, the adults were fighting over the truth.
Renick slammed the old family records onto the table.
"Start talking."
Daniel looked at him.
"You want the truth?"
"Yes."
"Then prepare yourself."
Daniel opened the folder.
"Edward Kavanaugh discovered something about the family fortune."
Renick stared.
"What?"
"The company wasn't originally built for you."
A pause.
"It was built for the person who could protect it."
Renick frowned.
"Protect it from what?"
Daniel looked toward the window.
"From people like Alexander."
The room became silent.
"Edward knew his own family could become corrupted by power."
Daniel continued.
"So he created a final test."
Belle crossed her arms.
"A test?"
Daniel nodded.
"The inheritance would only be transferred when the true heir proved they had the qualities the family had lost."
Renick laughed bitterly.
"And that heir is a seven-year-old child?"
Daniel looked at him.
"Exactly."
Renick shook his head.
"No."
"Why?"
"Because children are innocent."
Daniel's expression changed.
"That was the point."
Hours later, they entered the forest.
Only four people went.
Renick.
Daniel.
Belle.
Marcus.
They followed the path Micah described.
Deep into the trees.
Until they reached an old stone wall covered in moss.
Marcus looked around.
"There is nothing here."
Daniel stepped forward.
"There is."
He touched the wall.
Then pressed the black key into a hidden slot.
A click.
Everyone froze.
The entire wall moved.
Slowly.
Silently.
Revealing a staircase leading underground.
Renick stared.
His entire life had been built on this land.
And he had never known this existed.
They walked down.
The air became colder.
The deeper they went.
At the bottom was a massive metal door.
And carved into it were words.
Edward Kavanaugh's final message.
POWER DESTROYS THOSE WHO SEEK IT.
ONLY THOSE WHO PROTECT OTHERS DESERVE IT.
Belle looked at Daniel.
"This was for Micah."
Daniel nodded.
"Yes."
Renick stared at him.
"How did you know?"
Daniel was silent.
Then:
"Because Edward gave me a choice."
Renick turned.
"What choice?"
Daniel looked at the door.
"The night Micah was born."
A pause.
"He asked me to protect the heir."
Renick froze.
"You knew?"
Daniel nodded.
"Before anyone else."
"Then why didn't you tell me?"
Daniel looked at him.
"Because Alexander knew too."
The vault opened.
Inside was not gold.
Not money.
Not weapons.
Documents.
Thousands of them.
The entire history of the Kavanaugh family.
And in the center...
A small box.
With one name.
MICAH.
Belle stepped forward.
Her hands trembled.
She opened it.
Inside was a letter.
A letter written twenty years ago.
But addressed to a child born seven years ago.
Renick took it.
He read the first line.
Then his expression changed.
"Impossible."
Daniel looked at him.
"What?"
Renick slowly handed him the letter.
Daniel read it.
And froze.
Because the letter contained a truth nobody expected.
Edward Kavanaugh had not chosen Micah because of blood.
He had chosen him because of something else.
Something that happened the night Micah was born.
A decision made by a newborn child.
A decision witnessed by Edward himself.
Belle looked confused.
"What does it say?"
Nobody answered.
Until Renick finally spoke.
His voice barely above a whisper.
"It says..."
He looked toward Micah's name.
"It says Micah saved someone before he was even born."
The room went silent.
Because that was impossible.
Then the lights inside the vault turned on.
A hidden speaker activated.
And Edward Kavanaugh's voice filled the room.
"If you are hearing this..."
Everyone froze.
The voice continued.
"Then my family has failed again."
A pause.
"And the child I trusted to save us..."
A deeper silence.
"...has finally been found."
The recording continued.
"But there is one thing you must know."
Static.
Then Edward's final words:
"Micah is not the only heir."
The speaker went silent.
Everyone looked at each other.
Because if Edward was telling the truth...
Then somewhere in the world...
There was another child.
May you like
Another heir.
And that child might be the reason someone wanted Micah dead.
