CHAPTER 4: THE MAN WHO CLAIMED TO BE MICAH’S FATHER

The voice disappeared.

But the damage was already done.

The entire Kavanaugh estate stood frozen.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone had heard the same thing.

"Did you really think you could hide my son forever?"

The words echoed through every hallway.

Every room.

Every corner of the mansion.

And all eyes turned toward one person.

Belle Ashford.

She stood in the middle of the corridor, unable to move.

Her face had lost all color.

Her secret had survived seven years.

Seven years of silence.

Seven years of lies.

Seven years of protecting one little boy from a world that would destroy him if it knew the truth.

And now...

In one sentence...

Someone had torn everything apart.

"Mom?"

Micah's voice was small.

Too small.

Belle looked down.

Her son was staring at her.

Confused.

Afraid.

Searching her face for an answer.

A mother always knows when her child is waiting for the truth.

But Belle wasn't ready to give it.

Not yet.

"Micah, go with Miss Clara."

She pointed toward the older housekeeper standing nearby.

"But..."

"Please."

Something in her voice made him stop.

Micah nodded slowly.

As Clara led him away, Belle watched until he disappeared.

Only then did she allow herself to breathe.

Renick Kavanaugh arrived seconds later.

His expression was colder than anyone had ever seen.

"Who was that?"

Belle didn't answer.

"Belle."

She looked at him.

The man who controlled companies.

The man who made politicians answer his calls.

The man who could destroy someone's life with a single decision.

But right now, he wasn't looking at her like an employee.

He was looking at her like someone who had hidden a weapon inside his home.

"Who was that man?"

Belle opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because there were too many answers.

And every answer would change everything.

Renick stepped closer.

"Was he the person who attacked my daughter?"

Silence.

That was enough.

His eyes hardened.

"You know him."

Belle looked away.

"I knew him."

"Who is he?"

Her voice dropped.

"Daniel Voss."

The room became silent.

Even Renick's expression changed.

Because that name belonged to a ghost.

Daniel Voss.

A brilliant businessman.

A trusted advisor.

A man who had once been close to the Kavanaugh family.

Until the night he betrayed them.

The night he disappeared.

"The man who died seven years ago?"

Belle nodded.

"He didn't die."

Renick stared at her.

"Explain."

Belle looked toward the hallway where Micah had disappeared.

Then back at Renick.

"I can't."

Renick's voice became dangerous.

"You can."

"No."

"Belle."

"You don't understand."

Her eyes filled with fear.

"If Daniel is back, this is not about your daughter anymore."

Renick narrowed his eyes.

"What does that mean?"

Belle whispered:

"It means he came here for Micah."

Inside the security room, Marcus replayed the hacked message.

Again.

And again.

The voice had been digitally altered.

But there was something strange.

The system didn't show an outside connection.

The message came from inside the estate.

Someone was physically there.

Someone was watching.

"Sir."

Marcus looked at Renick.

"We have another problem."

Renick entered.

"What now?"

Marcus pointed toward the screen.

"The person who accessed the system used an old employee authorization."

Renick frowned.

"Whose?"

Marcus hesitated.

Then:

"Daniel Voss."

The room became silent.

"Impossible."

Marcus shook his head.

"Someone is using his credentials."

Renick stared at the screen.

Someone was pretending to be a dead man.

Or...

A dead man was never really dead.

Meanwhile, in the guest room, Micah sat quietly.

Brinley sat beside him.

For once, the daughter of the richest man in Boston looked just like any other child.

Scared.

Confused.

Lost.

"Is your mom okay?"

Micah looked down.

"I don't know."

Brinley hugged her rabbit.

"Your mom looks like my dad."

Micah looked at her.

"What do you mean?"

"They both look scared when they think nobody sees."

Micah didn't answer.

Because he knew.

Adults always thought children didn't understand.

They were wrong.

Children noticed everything.

The door opened.

Belle entered.

Immediately, Micah stood.

"Mom."

She walked toward him.

Then stopped.

Because she realized something.

This was the moment.

The moment she had feared for seven years.

The moment she had tried to avoid.

She sat beside him.

"Micah..."

The boy waited.

"Who is my father?"

The question came so quietly.

But it hit harder than any scream.

Belle closed her eyes.

Because she knew this day would come.

She just never expected it to come like this.

She took his hand.

"Your father was..."

Before she could finish—

The window shattered.

Glass exploded across the room.

Belle grabbed Micah and pulled him down.

Brinley screamed.

A security alarm erupted.

Guards rushed in.

On the floor beside the broken window was a small black object.

A phone.

The screen turned on by itself.

A video began playing.

A man's face appeared.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

Daniel Voss.

Micah stared.

Belle stopped breathing.

Because Daniel looked directly into the camera.

And then he smiled.

"Hello, son."

Micah froze.

The room became completely silent.

Daniel continued:

"I know your mother told you I was gone."

A pause.

"But she never told you why."

Belle grabbed the phone.

"Turn it off."

But Daniel kept speaking.

"She never told you what happened the night you were born."

Belle's hands started shaking.

Renick arrived at the doorway.

And he heard the final sentence.

The sentence that changed everything.

Daniel looked into the camera.

"Because Micah..."

"He wasn't supposed to be her son."

"He was supposed to be mine."

The screen went black.

And for the first time in seven years...

Belle realized something terrifying.

May you like

Daniel wasn't trying to hide from her.

He wanted everyone to know the truth.
