CHAPTER 13: THE GUARDIAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

The room changed in a single second.

Before the video played, Marcus Vale was the man everyone trusted.

The man who had protected the Kavanaugh family for years.

The man who knew every entrance, every camera, every weakness of the estate.

The man Renick relied on when everything went wrong.

But now...

Everyone was looking at him like a stranger.

Because seven years ago...

Marcus had stood beside Belle's hospital bed.

He had looked at newborn Micah.

And he had asked for the child.

"Marcus."

Renick's voice was quiet.

But everyone knew that was more dangerous than shouting.

"Explain."

Marcus didn't move.

His face was empty.

Almost calm.

But his hands betrayed him.

They were shaking.

"I can explain."

Renick stared.

"Then do it."

A long silence.

Marcus looked at Micah.

And for the first time...

The child who had saved Brinley looked afraid.

Not because of Marcus.

Because he saw the adults around him changing.

Again.

Another secret.

Another lie.

Belle immediately stepped in front of him.

Protecting him.

Marcus noticed.

And something painful crossed his face.

"You still protect him."

Belle's eyes narrowed.

"Because he needs protecting."

Marcus looked away.

"No."

His voice became softer.

"Because everyone thinks they know what he is."

Nobody understood.

Except Daniel.

His expression changed.

"What do you mean?"

Marcus looked at him.

"Ask yourself why Edward chose him."

Daniel stepped forward.

"Careful."

Marcus laughed quietly.

"You still don't know."

A pause.

"You spent seven years protecting the boy."

He looked around the room.

"But you never asked what he was protecting you from."

Renick grabbed Marcus by the collar.

The guards immediately reacted.

But Renick stopped them.

"Start talking."

Marcus looked at him.

"You want the truth?"

"Yes."

"Then you need to hear everything."

He slowly removed Renick's hand.

"Seven years ago, I wasn't trying to take Micah."

Belle froze.

"Then what were you doing?"

Marcus looked at her.

"I was trying to save him."

Nobody believed him.

Not immediately.

Because too many people had used those words.

Everyone claimed they were protecting Micah.

Everyone claimed they were saving him.

But people who truly protected children didn't hide them.

They didn't threaten them.

They didn't make their mothers run.

"From who?" Renick asked.

Marcus answered:

"From your father."

Silence.

Edward Kavanaugh.

Again.

The dead man whose secrets kept returning.

Renick stepped back.

"My father was dead."

Marcus nodded.

"Yes."

"Then how could he threaten a child?"

Marcus looked at the security screens.

"Because Edward prepared everything before he died."

Daniel frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"It means Edward knew exactly what would happen."

Marcus looked at Micah.

"He knew people would fight over the inheritance."

He looked at Elena.

"He knew there would be two heirs."

Then back at Renick.

"And he knew someone would try to control them."

Marcus walked toward the old video.

"That recording was incomplete."

He pressed a button.

The footage restarted.

The hospital room appeared again.

Belle holding newborn Micah.

Marcus entering.

But this time...

There were more details.

Marcus wasn't alone.

Someone was behind him.

A second person.

Hidden.

Belle stared.

"No..."

Renick looked confused.

"You know who that is?"

Belle's face turned pale.

Because she recognized the silhouette.

The way he stood.

The way he moved.

The way he watched.

She had seen that person before.

The night everything changed.

"Who?"

Daniel asked.

Belle whispered:

"Edward."

Everyone froze.

The footage continued.

The older man stepped closer.

Edward Kavanaugh.

Alive.

Years after his supposed death.

Standing in the hospital room.

Looking at baby Micah.

His voice came through the recording.

"The child cannot know."

Marcus asked:

"What about the girl?"

Edward replied:

"She must remain hidden too."

Elena stepped closer.

"My mother..."

Daniel looked at her.

The recording continued.

"One day, they will both return."

Edward placed something beside the newborn baby.

A small black key.

The same key Micah found in the forest.

Then Edward said:

"When they are old enough, they will choose."

Marcus on the recording asked:

"Choose what?"

Edward looked at Micah.

And said:

"Whether this family deserves to survive."

The footage ended.

Nobody spoke.

Because now the truth was worse.

Edward hadn't been protecting the family.

He had been testing them.

Renick looked at Marcus.

"You knew."

Marcus nodded.

"Yes."

"For seven years?"

"Yes."

"And you said nothing?"

Marcus looked at him.

"Because Edward made me promise."

Renick laughed bitterly.

"My dead father controlled you?"

Marcus looked at him.

"No."

A pause.

"Your father knew something about you."

Renick's expression changed.

"About me?"

Marcus nodded.

"He knew you would become exactly like him."

The words hit harder than an accusation.

Renick stepped back.

"What does that mean?"

Marcus looked toward the vault.

"It means Edward wasn't afraid someone would destroy the Kavanaugh empire."

"He was afraid someone would inherit it."

Later that night, while everyone argued over the truth...

Micah quietly left his room.

He wasn't running away.

He wasn't scared.

He was searching.

Because something bothered him.

Everyone kept talking about him.

About what he was.

About what he represented.

But nobody asked what he wanted.

He walked to the old vault entrance.

The black key was still in his hand.

Then he noticed something.

A small mark carved into the stone.

A symbol.

The same symbol that was on the wooden box.

Micah touched it.

The wall opened.

But this time...

There was no gold.

No documents.

No secrets.

Only a small room.

And inside...

A chair.

A table.

And a letter.

Addressed directly to him.

DEAR MICAH.

His hands trembled.

Because the letter was written seven years before.

Before he could read.

Before he could understand.

Before he could even speak.

He opened it.

The first sentence made him stop breathing.

"If you are reading this, then I am already dead."

A pause.

Then:

"And if you are reading this, it means everyone failed the test."

Micah continued.

The next line was even more terrifying.

"Your father will lie to you."

"Your mother will protect you."

"Renick will fear you."

"And Alexander will try to control you."

Micah's eyes widened.

But then came the final sentence.

The sentence that changed everything.

"The only person who truly knows why you were chosen..."

A long pause.

"...is you."

Suddenly, the vault door closed behind him.

Micah turned.

Someone was standing in the darkness.

A familiar voice whispered:

"You finally found it."

Micah froze.

Because he knew that voice.

It was the person everyone thought was protecting him.

May you like

The person who had been watching him since the beginning.

Marcus Vale.
