CHAPTER 8: THE BROTHER WHO DIED TWICE

For seven years, Renick Kavanaugh believed his brother was dead.

He had attended the funeral.

He had watched the coffin disappear beneath the ground.

He had listened to people say the same words everyone says when a powerful man loses someone close.

"He was taken too soon."

"Tragic."

"A terrible accident."

But Renick never cried.

Not because he didn't care.

Because something inside him refused to accept it.

Alexander Kavanaugh had always been impossible to understand.

His younger brother.

His closest ally.

The only person in the world who knew every weakness Renick had.

The only person who knew where the bodies were buried.

Not literally.

But sometimes secrets were more dangerous than graves.

And now...

Alexander was alive.

Standing behind the biggest conspiracy the Kavanaugh family had ever faced.

Renick stared at the black screen.

Nobody spoke.

The mansion felt different.

Like the walls themselves had learned the truth.

"Sir?"

Marcus's voice broke the silence.

Renick didn't answer.

He was still looking at the screen.

At the face of a dead man.

Then finally...

"Find him."

Marcus hesitated.

"Sir, if Alexander is alive..."

Renick turned.

His eyes were cold.

"Then he has been hiding for seven years."

A pause.

"And I want to know why."

Belle couldn't move.

Alexander Kavanaugh.

The name alone brought back memories she had tried to bury.

Unlike Daniel...

Alexander was not charming.

He was not warm.

He never pretended to be kind.

That was what made him dangerous.

Daniel made people trust him.

Alexander made people obey him.

When Belle first arrived at the Kavanaugh estate, she barely noticed Renick.

But she noticed Alexander.

Everyone did.

He was the man people stepped aside for.

The man employees feared.

The man who always seemed to know more than he should.

And seven years ago...

He was the last person Belle saw before everything changed.

"Mom?"

Micah's voice pulled her back.

She looked down.

Her son was staring at her.

"You know him too."

Belle went silent.

Micah noticed.

"Everyone knows something except me."

Those words hurt.

Because they were true.

For seven years, adults had built walls around him.

But children always found the cracks.

"I met him before you were born."

Micah looked toward the screen.

"Is he bad?"

Belle didn't answer.

Not immediately.

Because once again, the truth was complicated.

"He is dangerous."

Micah frowned.

"That's not the same thing."

Belle looked at him.

"What?"

"Being dangerous doesn't mean someone is bad."

She stared.

A seven-year-old boy had just said something she had spent years trying to understand.

Deep beneath Boston, in an abandoned underground facility...

Alexander Kavanaugh watched the mansion through dozens of screens.

He smiled.

Not happily.

Almost sadly.

"He's exactly like you."

A voice behind him spoke.

Daniel Voss stood in the shadows.

"You mean Renick?"

Alexander shook his head.

"No."

He looked at the screen showing Micah.

"The boy."

Daniel became silent.

For the first time, Alexander looked uncertain.

"Seven years."

He whispered.

"Seven years and you still protected him."

Daniel stepped forward.

"You don't understand."

Alexander laughed softly.

"No."

His eyes hardened.

"I understand perfectly."

He pointed at the screen.

"That child is the reason everyone lost everything."

Daniel's expression changed.

"Don't."

Alexander smiled.

"There it is."

"What?"

"The weakness."

Daniel stared at him.

Alexander walked closer.

"You spent your entire life pretending you were willing to sacrifice anything."

A pause.

"But then he was born."

His voice lowered.

"And suddenly Daniel Voss became a father."

Inside the Kavanaugh estate, Renick finally confronted Belle.

Not with anger.

With exhaustion.

"I need the whole story."

Belle looked at him.

"I don't know if you'll believe me."

"I don't care."

That surprised her.

Renick continued:

"I spent seven years believing my brother was dead."

His voice cracked slightly.

"I spent seven years believing Daniel betrayed me."

He looked toward Micah's room.

"Now my daughter is alive because your son saved her."

A pause.

"I don't know who the enemy is anymore."

Belle understood.

Because for the first time, Renick Kavanaugh wasn't asking as a billionaire.

He was asking as a man who had lost control.

"Seven years ago..."

Belle began.

"The night of the explosion..."

She stopped.

Her hands tightened.

"Alexander wasn't trying to kill Daniel."

Renick froze.

"What?"

Belle looked at him.

"He was trying to kill Micah."

The room became silent.

"That's impossible."

"I wish it was."

"Micah wasn't even born."

Belle nodded.

"Exactly."

Renick stared.

And slowly...

He understood.

Someone had known.

Someone knew about Micah before he existed.

Someone knew that a child would become important.

"Why?"

Belle looked away.

"Because of what Daniel discovered."

"What?"

"The Kavanaugh family wasn't built on what everyone thinks."

Renick's expression hardened.

"What are you saying?"

Belle whispered:

"Your father left something behind."

Renick stopped.

His father.

A subject nobody discussed.

A man whose decisions shaped the Kavanaugh empire.

"What did he leave?"

Belle looked toward Micah's room.

"A truth."

At 3:17 a.m., the security system detected movement.

Someone was inside the estate.

Not outside.

Inside.

The guards rushed through the halls.

Renick followed.

The signal came from one place.

Micah's room.

His heart stopped.

He ran.

The door was open.

The room was empty.

The window was broken.

Rain poured inside.

And on the bed...

A small wooden box sat open.

The same box Daniel had given Micah.

But now there was something new inside.

A document.

Renick picked it up.

His face changed.

Because the document was old.

Very old.

And at the top was a name.

KAVANAUGH FAMILY INHERITANCE TRANSFER AGREEMENT.

But the signature at the bottom...

Was not Renick's father.

Was not Alexander's.

Was not anyone from the Kavanaugh family.

It was Micah's.

A signature from seven years ago.

A signature made before Micah could even write.

Renick looked at Belle.

"What is this?"

Belle didn't answer.

Because she recognized the document.

And she knew the truth was finally coming.

Micah wasn't just connected to the Kavanaugh family.

He was the reason the Kavanaugh empire existed.

The reason Daniel fought.

The reason Alexander betrayed.

And the reason someone had tried to erase him before he was born.

Then a voice came from behind them.

Quiet.

Calm.

Terrifying.

"Now you understand."

Everyone turned.

Daniel Voss stood in the doorway.

Rain dripping from his coat.

Alive.

Watching.

"The boy was never the secret."

May you like

He looked at Micah's empty bed.

"The boy is the inheritance."
