CHAPTER 5: THE TRUTH HIDDEN IN A BIRTH CERTIFICATE

The room remained silent long after the phone screen went dark.

Nobody moved.

Nobody knew what to say.

Because sometimes a single sentence could destroy an entire world.

And Daniel Voss had just done exactly that.

"He wasn't supposed to be her son. He was supposed to be mine."

The words hung in the air.

Heavy.

Impossible.

Belle stood frozen beside Micah.

Her son.

The child she had protected for seven years.

The child she had sacrificed everything for.

Was now standing in a room full of strangers who wanted answers.

And the worst part...

Was that they were finally asking the right questions.

Renick Kavanaugh looked at Belle.

Not with anger.

Not yet.

With something much more dangerous.

Disappointment.

"Tell me he's lying."

Belle looked down.

She couldn't.

That silence was the answer.

Renick's jaw tightened.

"You brought a child connected to Daniel Voss into my house."

Belle immediately looked up.

"No."

"Then explain."

"I didn't know he was alive."

Renick stepped closer.

"That isn't what I asked."

Belle's eyes filled with tears.

"Micah is not a weapon."

"I never said he was."

"But everyone is looking at him like he is."

The room went quiet.

Because she was right.

Everyone was looking at the seven-year-old boy differently now.

Not as the child who saved Brinley.

Not as the brave little boy from the balcony.

But as a mystery.

A secret.

A connection to a dangerous man.

Micah noticed.

And that hurt Belle more than anything.

Because children always notice when the world suddenly changes around them.

"Mom."

Belle turned.

Micah stood near the bed.

His face was calm.

Too calm.

"Is he my father?"

Nobody spoke.

Belle closed her eyes.

She had imagined this moment thousands of times.

She imagined telling him gently.

She imagined explaining everything when he was older.

She imagined protecting his childhood.

But life had ripped away every plan she had.

So she did the only thing she could.

She told the truth.

"Yes."

Micah stared at her.

The room became completely silent.

"Daniel Voss is your father."

The words finally existed outside her mind.

Seven years of hiding.

Seven years of fear.

Gone.

Micah looked down.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Belle's heart broke.

"Because I was scared."

"Of him?"

She hesitated.

"Yes."

Micah looked confused.

"Why?"

Because how could she explain?

How could she tell a seven-year-old that the man who gave him half his blood was also the person who destroyed everything around him?

How could she explain that love and danger sometimes came from the same person?

Seven years earlier...

Belle Ashford had been nobody.

A young woman working two jobs just to survive.

She never expected to become part of the world of billionaires.

She never expected to meet Daniel Voss.

And she never expected one night to change everything.

Daniel was different from Renick.

Renick was cold.

Controlled.

Impossible to read.

Daniel was charming.

Warm.

He made people feel important.

That was why nobody saw the danger.

Including Belle.

She believed him.

She believed every promise.

Until the night she found out the truth.

Daniel wasn't trying to build an empire.

He was trying to steal one.

And the Kavanaugh family was standing in his way.

When Belle discovered the documents proving Daniel's betrayal, she thought she could expose him.

She was wrong.

Daniel found her first.

"You don't understand what you've found."

Belle remembered his voice.

Calm.

Almost gentle.

"You think Renick Kavanaugh is the hero?"

She had been terrified.

"What are you talking about?"

Daniel smiled.

"Everyone has secrets, Belle."

That night, Daniel showed her something.

A file.

A hidden record.

A truth about the Kavanaugh family that could destroy them.

But before Belle could understand it...

She discovered she was pregnant.

With Daniel's child.

And suddenly, the battle wasn't just about money anymore.

It was about a baby.

A baby both sides wanted.

Present day.

Micah sat quietly.

"Did my father want me?"

Belle felt tears forming.

That question hurt more than any accusation.

"Yes."

"Then why did you run?"

Because Daniel wasn't the man everyone thought he was.

Because after she discovered what he was planning, she realized the only way to protect her child was to disappear.

Because Daniel had once told her:

"If I can't have my empire, I'll have something more valuable."

She never forgot those words.

"Because I wanted you safe."

Micah looked at her.

"From him?"

Belle nodded.

"From everyone."

Suddenly, Renick's phone rang.

He answered immediately.

A few seconds later, his face changed.

"What?"

Everyone looked at him.

"Say that again."

Silence.

Then:

"Where?"

Renick ended the call.

Marcus entered behind him.

"Sir?"

Renick looked at Belle.

Then at Micah.

"The old Kavanaugh archives were opened."

Belle's face changed.

"No..."

Renick noticed.

"You know what is there?"

Belle didn't answer.

She didn't need to.

Because Daniel's message was becoming clear.

He wasn't just returning.

He was searching.

For something hidden.

Something powerful.

Something connected to Micah's birth.

Renick walked toward the door.

"Lock the archives."

Marcus shook his head.

"Too late."

"What?"

Marcus swallowed.

"Someone already took the file."

Renick's eyes narrowed.

"What file?"

Marcus looked at Belle.

Then at Micah.

"The one containing Micah Ashford's original birth records."

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone understood.

The truth about Micah's birth wasn't just a family secret.

It was something someone was willing to kill for.

That night, while the entire estate searched for Daniel Voss...

Micah stood alone in the hallway.

He couldn't sleep.

Too many voices.

Too many questions.

Then he saw something on the floor.

A small envelope.

Again.

No name.

No address.

Only his name written on it.

FOR MICAH.

His hands trembled as he opened it.

Inside was an old photograph.

A photograph of a baby.

A baby wrapped in a blue blanket.

On the back was a date.

The day Micah was born.

And underneath it...

A sentence.

A sentence that made his entire world collapse.

"Your mother lied about who saved you that night."

Micah looked up.

At the end of the dark hallway...

Someone was standing there.

Watching him.

A man's voice whispered:

"Hello, son."

May you like

And this time...

Micah recognized the voice.
