Chapter 8: The Last Message

The basement disappeared.
At least, that was how it felt.
Grant Callahan stood frozen in front of the laptop screen, but he was no longer seeing the hidden room.
He was no longer seeing Victor.
No longer seeing Renata.
He was back on a rainy mountain road seven years earlier.
Back to the phone call he never answered.
Back to the last time he heard his wife's voice.
Back to the moment his entire world collapsed.
On the screen, the recording continued.
The image was shaky.
A small camera had been placed somewhere inside a vehicle.
The interior was dark.
Rain hammered against the windshield.
Then...
A woman appeared.
Claire Callahan.
Grant's wife.
Lily's mother.
She looked exhausted.
Her face was pale.
Her eyes carried the kind of fear no person should ever have to feel.
But she was alive.
She was there.
Grant's hand slowly covered his mouth.
For seven years, he had replayed the police report.
The photos.
The accident reconstruction.
The final moments.
But he had never seen this.
Never known this existed.
Claire looked directly into the camera.
"Grant..."
"If you're watching this..."
She paused.
Her breathing became uneven.
"Then something happened."
"Something went wrong."
Behind the camera, rain continued pounding.
"I don't have much time."
Grant whispered,
"Claire..."
It was barely a sound.
But Emma heard it.
She looked at him.
For the first time since she met him...
the powerful billionaire wasn't there.
Only a husband who had lost his wife.
Claire continued.
"I found the documents."
"The ones hidden inside Callahan Industrial."
Grant's eyes narrowed.
Documents.
Victor had mentioned them.
"The board members have been moving company funds."
"They created fake contracts."
"They've been stealing from the company for years."
Emma looked confused.
Callahan Industrial Group had been considered one of the most successful companies in America.
Nobody suspected anything.
Claire looked over her shoulder.
As if afraid someone might appear.
"But that's not the worst part."
Her voice dropped.
"The person helping them..."
She swallowed.
"...is someone close to us."
The screen flickered.
Grant leaned forward.
"Who?"
As if Claire could hear him seven years later.
She whispered the answer.
"Renata."
The room went silent.
Renata's face went white.
"No."
"No, that's edited."
"Someone manipulated this."
But nobody listened.
Claire continued.
"I don't know how long she's been involved."
"I don't know what she wants."
"But she has been asking questions."
"About Grant's schedule."
"About Lily's inheritance."
"About the security system."
Grant closed his eyes.
The words hit harder than any accusation.
Because he remembered.
Renata had entered his life three months after Claire's death.
She had appeared when he was vulnerable.
When Lily was broken.
When he needed someone.
At the time, he thought it was fate.
Now...
It felt like a trap.
The video continued.
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
"Grant..."
"If something happens to me..."
"Please don't let Lily be alone with her."
The sentence destroyed the room.
Emma immediately looked at Lily.
The little girl was crying silently.
She understood.
She remembered.
Even after seven years.
Children remembered what adults tried to bury.
Claire continued.
"There is someone helping me."
Grant looked at Victor.
Victor remained expressionless.
"Someone who knows the company."
"Someone who knows the people involved."
"But I don't know if I can trust him completely."
Victor's face changed slightly.
For the first time...
uncertainty appeared.
Claire continued.
"His name is Victor Hale."
Everyone looked toward him.
Grant turned.
"She didn't trust you either."
Victor nodded slowly.
"No."
"I told you."
"The truth is complicated."
Grant looked back at the screen.
The video wasn't finished.
Claire looked terrified now.
"I need to hide this somewhere."
"I can't send it electronically."
"They are monitoring everything."
She lifted a small envelope.
"Grant, if I fail..."
"The original evidence is hidden in a place only Lily knows."
Grant frowned.
"Lily?"
Claire looked directly into the camera.
"My little girl is smarter than anyone realizes."
"She remembers everything."
"Even things she cannot explain."
The image shook.
A sound came from somewhere outside the car.
A door closing.
Claire froze.
Someone was nearby.
Her breathing quickened.
"If someone tells you I caused the accident..."
"Don't believe them."
"If someone tells you I abandoned Lily..."
"Don't believe them."
"Grant..."
Her voice cracked.
"Protect our daughter."
The screen suddenly went black.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The silence was unbearable.
Then...
Lily made a small sound.
Not crying.
Not fear.
Recognition.
She looked at the screen.
Then slowly walked toward the laptop.
Everyone watched.
She touched the frozen image of her mother.
"Mommy..."
The word came out broken.
But clear.
A second word followed.
"Car."
Emma covered her mouth.
Grant fell to his knees.
Because this was the second time tonight his daughter had spoken.
And both times...
it was because of her mother.
Renata suddenly stepped backward.
"This proves nothing."
Everyone turned.
She laughed nervously.
"It's a video."
"Anyone could have made it."
Victor looked at her.
"You really think that's your defense?"
Renata pointed at him.
"You."
"You created this."
"You always hated Grant."
"You want his company."
Victor's expression hardened.
"Do you know why I disappeared seven years ago?"
"Because I was trying to stay alive."
"The people who killed Claire tried to kill me too."
Grant looked at him.
"Why didn't you come to me?"
Victor stared back.
"Because I did."
"You didn't believe me."
The words struck.
Grant said nothing.
Victor continued.
"I sent you evidence."
"Three times."
"You ignored every message."
Grant's face changed.
"No."
"You never received them."
Victor gave a bitter smile.
"Exactly."
Dawson suddenly interrupted.
"Sir."
Everyone looked.
He was staring at the laptop.
"There's more."
Grant turned.
"What?"
"The file wasn't complete."
Dawson pointed.
"Someone cut the video."
"There's another hidden section."
"Where?"
"The final thirty seconds."
"Can you recover it?"
Dawson worked quickly.
The screen flickered.
A damaged file appeared.
CLAIRE_FINAL_AUDIO
The room went silent again.
Dawson pressed play.
Static.
Rain.
Claire's breathing.
Then...
A man's voice.
A voice that nobody expected.
A voice that made Grant's blood turn cold.
Because it belonged to someone who had stood beside him for seven years.
Someone he trusted.
Someone who had comforted him after Claire's death.
The voice said:
"Renata, this has gone too far."
A pause.
Then Claire's terrified scream.
The recording ended.
Dawson looked at Grant.
"Sir..."
Grant stared at the black screen.
"Play it again."
Dawson did.
The voice repeated.
Clearer this time.
"Renata..."
Grant's expression changed.
Because he recognized the second voice.
Not Victor.
Not a stranger.
Not a criminal.
It was someone inside his own family.
Someone who had been in the Callahan mansion every day.
Someone who had watched Lily grow up.
Someone who had helped him bury his wife.
The voice belonged to...
May you like
his own father.
