Chapter 5: The Basement DoorChapter 5: The Basement Door

The word "Basement."
It sat alone on the page, crooked and uneven, written by a hand that had forgotten how to form letters.
For several long seconds, no one spoke.
Grant stared at the notebook.
Then at Lily.
Then back at the single word.
His heartbeat slowed into the cold, deliberate rhythm that always came before an important decision.
"Emma."
"Yes, sir?"
"Has Lily ever been in the basement?"
Emma shook her head immediately.
"No."
"She wasn't allowed."
Grant looked toward Mrs. Holloway.
"What about you?"
The elderly housekeeper answered just as firmly.
"Never."
"The wine cellar and archives are downstairs, but Lily has never been permitted there."
Grant slowly turned toward Renata.
"And you?"
She didn't hesitate.
"I've gone downstairs dozens of times."
"You know that."
"I organize charity inventory."
Grant held her gaze.
"And did Lily ever accompany you?"
"No."
The answer came too quickly.
Too cleanly.
Grant stood.
"Dawson."
The security chief straightened.
"Bring me every key to the lower basement."
Dawson frowned.
"There are only three."
"I know."
"Mine."
He placed a silver key onto the desk.
"Mrs. Holloway's."
She silently removed hers from a chain around her neck.
"And Renata's."
Everyone looked at Renata.
She smiled.
"Of course."
She reached into her handbag.
Then paused.
A tiny crease appeared between her eyebrows.
"That's strange."
Grant said nothing.
She searched another pocket.
Then another.
"I..."
"I must have left it upstairs."
Dawson quietly spoke.
"According to security protocol, duplicate master keys are never supposed to leave their assigned holders."
Renata's smile tightened.
"I said I probably left it upstairs."
Grant nodded once.
"Dawson."
"Escort Miss Cole."
"Retrieve the key."
Renata's eyes narrowed.
"You're sending security with me?"
"I'm ensuring nothing disappears."
Ten minutes later...
Dawson returned alone.
He carried a clear evidence bag.
Inside lay Renata's key.
And something else.
A small brass key attached to the same ring.
Grant frowned.
"What's the second key?"
Dawson answered quietly.
"It isn't part of the estate."
"We don't know."
Grant picked up the brass key.
Unlike the polished master key, this one was worn.
Frequently used.
"What did Miss Cole say?"
"She claims she's never seen it before."
Emma couldn't help herself.
"How could it be attached to her keyring if she's never seen it?"
No one answered.
Because there was no reasonable explanation.
Grant walked toward the study door.
"Let's go."
Renata took a step forward.
"This is ridiculous."
"You're searching your own house because of a frightened child and a maid?"
Grant stopped.
Without turning around, he spoke.
"My daughter has spoken her first words in two years."
"She has pointed to you every time she's been asked who frightened her."
"Someone installed a hidden camera."
"Someone attempted to erase security records."
"And now we find an unidentified key attached to yours."
He finally looked back.
"If all of that is coincidence..."
"...then tonight should clear your name."
The staircase leading to the basement was hidden behind a paneled wall in the library.
Few guests even knew it existed.
Grant unlocked the concealed door.
Heavy steel hinges groaned open.
Cold air drifted upward.
The basement stretched beneath the mansion like another world.
Concrete walls.
Industrial lighting.
Storage rooms.
Wine vaults.
Old family archives.
The smell of cedar and stone filled the corridor.
Emma instinctively held Lily closer.
The little girl's breathing became uneven.
Grant noticed immediately.
"Lily."
"You don't have to come."
She shook her head violently.
Then pointed toward the darkness ahead.
Emma whispered,
"She wants us to keep going."
The group moved slowly.
Dawson and another guard walked first.
Flashlights swept across the corridor.
Everything appeared normal.
Room One.
Archived financial records.
Locked.
Room Two.
Climate-controlled wine collection.
Locked.
Room Three.
Holiday decorations.
Open.
Nothing unusual.
Then they reached the final door.
Unlike the others...
It had no label.
Only reinforced steel.
Grant frowned.
"I don't remember this."
Mrs. Holloway looked equally confused.
"It used to be a maintenance room."
Dawson tried Grant's master key.
Nothing.
Mrs. Holloway's key.
Nothing.
Then...
He inserted the worn brass key found on Renata's keyring.
Click.
The lock opened.
Every face in the hallway changed.
Renata's color drained instantly.
"I..."
"I've never seen that room before."
Grant didn't answer.
He slowly pulled the heavy door open.
The room inside wasn't large.
Perhaps fifteen feet square.
Perfectly clean.
Too clean.
There was no dust.
No cobwebs.
Someone had been using it recently.
Against one wall stood a child's wooden chair.
Beside it...
A small bookshelf.
Several coloring books.
Boxes of crayons.
Emma frowned.
"Lily's..."
She recognized them immediately.
Those books had disappeared months ago.
Everyone had assumed they had been misplaced during renovations.
Grant walked farther inside.
A tiny pink blanket lay folded neatly on a narrow cot.
His chest tightened.
That blanket belonged in Lily's bedroom.
Near the corner...
He found Rosie.
The stuffed rabbit.
Grant picked it up carefully.
The rabbit's ear had been sewn back together with black thread.
Lily saw it.
She let out a tiny gasp.
Then...
Without warning...
She broke free from Emma's arms and ran across the room.
She snatched Rosie from her father's hands.
Holding the rabbit tightly against her chest...
She backed away until she reached the wall.
Her entire body was shaking.
Grant's heart broke.
This wasn't the reaction of a child finding a lost toy.
This was the reaction of someone recovering something that had been taken.
Emma noticed something else.
There were drawings taped to one wall.
Crayon drawings.
Dozens of them.
Houses.
Trees.
Clouds.
A little girl.
A man.
A woman.
At first glance...
They looked like ordinary children's pictures.
Then Emma stepped closer.
Her blood ran cold.
Every picture showed the same thing.
The little girl was always drawn inside a small square room.
Outside the room...
A woman stood smiling.
The woman had long dark hair.
And around her neck...
A necklace with a large diamond.
Exactly like the one Renata wore every day.
Grant slowly removed the final drawing from the wall.
At the bottom...
In shaky block letters...
Were four words.
Don't tell Daddy.
No one spoke.
No one moved.
The silence became unbearable.
Then...
From somewhere behind the bookshelf...
A faint electronic sound echoed through the room.
Beep.
Dawson immediately raised his flashlight.
"Sir..."
"There's something back here."
He pulled the shelf aside.
Hidden in the wall was a small steel safe.
Its keypad was still glowing.
And the display showed one chilling message.
May you like
ENTER PIN.
Someone had expected to come back.
