Chapter 3: The Hidden Camera

The words echoed through the mansion long after Grant left the bathroom.

"Cancel the gala."

Within minutes, tuxedoed waiters stopped pouring champagne.

The orchestra packed away their instruments.

Luxury cars that had barely entered the estate were politely turned around.

Outside, rumors spread among the guests.

A family emergency.

No one dared ask questions.

Inside the mansion, however, the emergency had only begun.

Grant led the group into his private study.

The room overlooked the Hudson River through floor-to-ceiling windows. Walnut bookshelves lined the walls, and a fire crackled quietly despite the mild autumn evening.

The warmth did nothing to ease the tension.

Emma sat on the leather sofa with Lily curled tightly against her.

The little girl still refused to let go of Emma's hand.

Across the room, Renata stood perfectly straight, arms folded.

She looked irritated rather than frightened.

Grant noticed.

Most innocent people became emotional when accused.

Renata seemed... calculating.

Security Chief Dawson entered carrying a tablet.

"Sir."

"The hallway footage is ready."

Grant nodded.

"Play it."

The video appeared on the large television mounted above the fireplace.

Timestamp:

5:41 PM

Renata entered the bathroom with Lily.

The little girl walked obediently beside her.

No sign of distress.

Timestamp:

5:43 PM

The bathroom door closed.

Nothing unusual.

Grant watched silently.

Timestamp:

5:46 PM

Emma appeared in the hallway carrying a basket of laundry.

She stopped.

Looked around.

Then suddenly dropped everything.

Without hesitation...

She ran.

Grant replayed those few seconds.

Again.

And again.

Emma had not walked.

She had sprinted.

Her face showed unmistakable panic.

He paused the footage.

"Emma."

"Why did you run?"

She answered immediately.

"I smelled burned hair."

"You smelled it from the hallway?"

"Yes."

Grant looked toward Dawson.

"How far?"

"About twenty-two meters from the bathroom entrance, sir."

Grant remained thoughtful.

Burned hair had a distinctive odor.

Sharp.

Pungent.

Impossible to mistake.

But...

Could it travel that far?

Before he could ask...

Mrs. Holloway quietly spoke.

"It can."

Everyone turned toward her.

She looked embarrassed.

"My sister owned a beauty salon for thirty years."

"When hair burns..."

"...the smell spreads very quickly."

Grant nodded once.

He resumed the video.

Timestamp:

5:47 PM

Emma burst through the bathroom doors.

Exactly four seconds later...

Renata stumbled backward into the bathtub.

The hallway camera couldn't see inside.

Only shadows.

Movement.

Then...

Nothing.

Timestamp:

5:49 PM

Security arrived.

Grant stopped the video.

No one spoke.

Finally...

Renata broke the silence.

"There."

"You've seen it."

"Emma attacked me."

Grant looked at her.

"The footage confirms she pushed you."

Renata smiled triumphantly.

"But..."

Grant continued.

"It doesn't explain why."

Her smile faded.

Grant stood and walked toward the window.

His reflection stared back at him.

For years...

He had negotiated billion-dollar contracts.

Investigated corporate fraud.

Exposed executives who believed they were untouchable.

One lesson had never failed him.

People lied.

Behavior rarely did.

He turned back.

"Lily."

The little girl looked up cautiously.

"I'm going to ask one question."

"You don't have to speak."

"If the curling iron hurt..."

He held up one finger.

"...show me one."

"If it happened more than once..."

He raised a second finger.

"...show me two."

The room fell silent.

Lily stared at her father.

Then...

Very slowly...

She lifted both tiny hands.

Each held up two trembling fingers.

Four fingers total.

Grant frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Emma suddenly realized.

"No..."

She whispered.

Grant looked at her.

"What?"

Emma's face had gone pale.

"I think..."

"I think she's saying it happened four times."

The room froze.

Grant looked back at Lily.

"Four times?"

Tears filled the little girl's eyes.

She nodded.

Once.

Renata laughed loudly.

"This is absurd."

"She's seven."

"She's traumatized."

"Now you're interpreting finger signals?"

Grant didn't answer.

Instead, he walked to Lily.

He gently brushed aside her blond hair.

His expression changed.

There...

Hidden beneath the longer strands...

Were tiny uneven patches.

Not one.

Not two.

Several.

Hair growing at different lengths.

As though parts had burned months ago...

...and had slowly grown back.

Grant's heartbeat slowed.

He looked carefully.

There was another.

Near her left ear.

Another behind her neck.

Almost invisible.

Unless someone was looking for them.

He whispered,

"How long..."

Emma's eyes filled with horror.

She remembered countless mornings brushing Lily's hair.

Renata had always insisted on "styling" it afterward.

Always privately.

Always with the bathroom door locked.

Emma had assumed...

She had never questioned it.

The guilt hit like a hammer.

"I should have noticed."

Her voice cracked.

"I'm so sorry."

Lily looked at her immediately.

She shook her head.

Almost desperately.

As if refusing to let Emma blame herself.

Grant saw the exchange.

His chest tightened.

Dawson's phone vibrated.

He glanced at the screen.

Then looked toward Grant.

"Sir."

"Our IT department found something unusual."

Grant's eyes narrowed.

"What?"

"The hallway network."

"There was a manual deletion request at 5:50 PM."

Everyone turned toward Renata.

She frowned.

"What are you looking at me for?"

Dawson continued.

"The request came from..."

He checked again.

"...Miss Cole's administrator security pass."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Renata stared at him.

"That's impossible."

"I didn't delete anything."

Grant's voice remained calm.

"When was the request canceled?"

"Thirty-eight seconds later."

"Why?"

"Our backup server rejected it."

Grant slowly looked at his fiancée.

She opened her mouth.

Closed it.

Opened it again.

"I..."

"I don't know anything about security systems."

"No?"

Grant asked quietly.

"Then why does your access card appear in the log?"

"I..."

She had no answer.

Just then, another security officer hurried into the study.

"Dawson."

"You need to see this."

"What is it?"

"We found a camera."

Everyone frowned.

"A camera?"

The officer nodded.

"In the upstairs hallway."

"It isn't one of ours."

Grant's expression hardened.

"What do you mean?"

"It was hidden inside a decorative smoke detector."

The officer held up a tiny black device inside an evidence bag.

"It records independently."

"It has its own memory card."

Emma blinked.

"Someone secretly installed a camera?"

The officer nodded.

"Yes."

"And..."

He looked toward Grant.

"It was pointed directly at Miss Lily's bedroom door."

A chill swept through the room.

Grant took the evidence bag himself.

The camera was no larger than a coin.

Professional grade.

Not something purchased casually.

He looked at Dawson.

"Can we recover the footage?"

Dawson nodded.

"If the memory card hasn't been wiped..."

"We should be able to."

Grant's jaw tightened.

"Forensic lab."

"Immediately."

"Tonight."

"Yes, sir."

As Dawson turned to leave, Grant stopped him.

"And Dawson..."

"Yes, sir?"

"If that camera contains what I think it does..."

Grant's voice became colder than anyone in the room had ever heard.

"...don't call the police."

"Call my attorneys first."

Because, for the first time since his wife had died...

May you like

Grant was beginning to suspect that someone had not only been hurting his daughter.

Someone had been watching her.
