Chapter 12: The Woman Behind The Voice

The basement speakers crackled.
Static filled the room.
Everyone stood frozen.
Nobody dared move.
Because the impossible had just spoken.
Claire Callahan's voice.
Not an old recording.
Not a memory.
Not a damaged file from seven years ago.
A voice that sounded alive.
A voice that sounded close.
A voice that knew Grant was listening.
"Grant..."
The speaker hummed softly.
"I know you're confused."
"I know you think I disappeared."
"But I need you to listen carefully."
Grant's face had gone completely pale.
His eyes remained fixed on the speaker above them.
For seven years...
he had imagined this moment.
Hearing her voice again.
But never like this.
Never when the truth was about to destroy everything he believed.
Claire continued.
"First..."
"I need you to know something."
"I never abandoned Lily."
The little girl immediately looked up.
Her lips trembled.
"Mommy..."
Grant crouched beside her.
He didn't say anything.
He just held her hand.
The recording continued.
"Everything I did was to protect her."
"I knew someone was watching our family."
"Someone inside the house."
"Someone we trusted."
Richard's expression darkened.
"Turn it off."
Nobody moved.
Grant looked at him.
"No."
For the first time in his life...
Grant gave his father an order.
Richard stared back.
And realized his son was no longer the boy he controlled.
Claire continued.
"I left clues."
"The necklace."
"The recordings."
"The basement room."
"But I didn't leave them for adults."
A pause.
"I left them for Lily."
Emma looked at the little girl.
Claire's voice softened.
"Because children remember what adults forget."
Lily touched Rosie, her old stuffed rabbit.
A small memory seemed to pass through her eyes.
The recording continued.
"Grant..."
"If you found this message, then Lily has probably started talking again."
A tiny pause.
"And that means someone finally made her feel safe."
Everyone looked at Emma.
Emma lowered her eyes.
Claire's voice continued.
"Whoever that person is..."
"Protect them."
"Because they will become the target next."
The lights suddenly flickered.
Dawson immediately checked the security system.
"Someone is accessing the network again."
Grant looked at him.
"Who?"
Dawson typed quickly.
His expression changed.
"Unknown."
"Can you block them?"
"I'm trying."
The speakers suddenly changed.
Claire's voice disappeared.
A different voice replaced it.
A man's voice.
Cold.
Distorted.
"Grant Callahan."
Everyone froze.
"Congratulations."
"You found the truth."
"But truth has a price."
Victor stepped forward.
"Who is this?"
No answer.
The voice continued.
"You have three choices."
"Expose everything."
"Protect your company."
"Or protect your daughter."
Grant's face hardened.
"This is a threat."
The voice laughed softly.
"No."
"It's a reminder."
"Your father learned this lesson."
"Your wife learned this lesson."
"Now you will."
Suddenly, the basement television turned on.
A countdown appeared.
05:00
Everyone stared.
"What is that?"
Dawson moved toward the screen.
"A timer."
"For what?"
He checked.
Then his face changed.
"Sir..."
"What?"
"The estate security system."
"What about it?"
"If the timer reaches zero..."
He swallowed.
"The entire house network will be wiped."
"All security records."
"All financial archives."
"Everything."
Grant looked at Richard.
"You planned this?"
Richard shook his head.
"No."
For the first time...
he looked genuinely concerned.
"I didn't."
Victor looked around.
"Then someone else is controlling the game."
Emma felt a chill.
Someone else.
A third person.
Someone who had been invisible.
Renata suddenly spoke.
"I know who."
Everyone turned.
She looked terrified.
Not pretending.
Terrified.
Grant stared.
"Who?"
Renata hesitated.
"Someone who was supposed to be gone."
Victor frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Renata looked at the screen.
"The person who created all of this..."
"...wasn't Richard."
The room went silent.
Grant stepped closer.
"Then who?"
Renata whispered:
"Claire."
Everyone froze.
Emma shook her head.
"No."
"That doesn't make sense."
Renata looked at her.
"You think you know her."
"You don't."
"Nobody did."
Grant's voice became dangerous.
"Explain."
Renata swallowed.
"Claire wasn't just investigating the company."
"She was investigating your family."
"She found things."
"Things about Richard."
"Things about Victor."
"Things about..."
She looked at Grant.
"...you."
Grant stared.
"Me?"
Renata nodded.
"She believed you were being prepared to become exactly like your father."
"No."
"She was afraid."
"She thought power was changing you."
Emma looked at Grant.
She didn't believe Renata completely.
But she noticed something.
Grant did not immediately deny it.
Because somewhere deep inside...
he remembered.
Before Claire died...
they had argued.
About the company.
About his father.
About the Callahan legacy.
The countdown continued.
03:41
Dawson worked faster.
"I need access."
"Try mine."
Grant handed him his security device.
Dawson connected it.
Denied.
"Again."
Denied.
"Someone changed your permissions."
Grant frowned.
"Who can do that?"
Dawson looked at him.
"Only someone with the highest authority."
Everyone slowly turned.
Richard.
Richard sighed.
"I suppose the time has come."
Grant looked at him.
"What?"
Richard reached inside his coat.
Everyone reacted.
Dawson raised his weapon.
"Slowly."
Richard removed a small envelope.
Not a weapon.
An envelope.
He handed it to Grant.
"This belongs to you."
Grant didn't take it immediately.
"What is it?"
"Something Claire gave me."
The room went silent.
"She gave you something?"
Richard nodded.
"Before the accident."
Grant's eyes hardened.
"You said she was your enemy."
"She was."
"Then why?"
Richard looked at Lily.
"Because she was right."
That answer shocked everyone.
Grant opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
A family photo.
Grant.
Claire.
Baby Lily.
And another person standing behind them.
A person Grant recognized.
His breath stopped.
Because the person in the photograph...
was someone who should have been impossible.
Someone who had been working beside him for years.
Someone who had advised him.
Someone who knew every secret inside Callahan Industrial.
On the back of the photograph was one sentence written by Claire.
"The person who destroys us will be the person Grant trusts most."
Grant slowly turned the photograph over.
His face changed.
Emma noticed.
"Who is it?"
Grant didn't answer.
His eyes moved toward the mansion above them.
Toward the life he had built.
Toward the people around him.
Finally...
he whispered the name.
"The one person..."
"...who has been with me since the beginning."
The countdown reached:
02:59
And then...
every phone inside the basement rang at the same time.
Dawson checked his screen.
A message appeared.
No number.
No sender.
Just five words.
LOOK BEHIND YOU, GRANT.
Grant slowly turned.
Behind them...
the hidden basement wall had opened.
A second secret room appeared.
Inside was a desk.
A computer.
And sitting on the desk...
was a live video call.
The screen showed a woman.
A woman everyone thought was dead.
A woman with tears in her eyes.
A woman who whispered:
"Grant..."
"I'm sorry."
The room stopped breathing.
Because on the screen...
was Claire Callahan.
May you like
Alive.
