Chapter 4: The Memory Card

The study remained silent long after the tiny hidden camera disappeared into Dawson's evidence case.

Grant stood motionless.

His fingers tightened around the leather chair until the wood creaked beneath the pressure.

Someone had secretly installed surveillance equipment inside his own home.

Inside the one place he had believed his daughter was safest.

That thought alone was enough to make his blood run cold.

But another question settled over the room.

Who?

"Everyone stays here."

Grant's voice was calm.

Too calm.

"No one leaves the estate until I understand exactly what's happening."

Renata folded her arms.

"You can't seriously believe I'm involved in this."

Grant looked at her.

"I haven't accused you."

"But you're treating me like a criminal."

"No."

He replied evenly.

"I'm treating everyone as a possible witness."

The distinction was deliberate.

Yet Renata heard the warning behind it.

Emma gently stroked Lily's hair, avoiding the burned patches.

The child had finally stopped trembling, though she still refused to release Emma's hand.

Mrs. Holloway quietly approached with a blanket.

She draped it around Lily's shoulders.

The little girl whispered nothing.

But she offered the elderly woman a faint nod.

Mrs. Holloway's eyes filled with tears.

"I've worked for this family for twenty-seven years," she murmured.

"I watched your father grow from a reckless teenager into the man he is today."

She looked toward Grant.

"I should have protected you both better."

Grant didn't answer.

Because he felt exactly the same.

Downstairs, the mansion had transformed.

Only an hour earlier it had been alive with preparations.

Crystal chandeliers glowed.

Chefs rushed through the kitchens.

Florists arranged thousands of white roses.

Now...

Everything had stopped.

Staff members whispered in corners.

Nobody knew what had happened.

But everyone sensed that the Callahan household had changed forever.

An hour later.

Dawson returned.

He carried a sealed evidence envelope.

His face was unusually serious.

"The forensic technician completed a preliminary extraction."

"So quickly?"

Grant asked.

"We have our own digital lab."

Dawson placed a laptop on the conference table.

"The memory card wasn't encrypted."

"But..."

He hesitated.

"The footage isn't what we expected."

Grant's expression sharpened.

"Play it."

The screen flickered to life.

A timestamp appeared.

Three weeks earlier.

The camera overlooked the hallway outside Lily's bedroom.

The image was clear.

Every movement in the corridor had been recorded.

Emma appeared first.

She carried a tray of hot chocolate into Lily's room.

Ten minutes later she came back out.

Nothing unusual.

Another recording.

Two days later.

Mrs. Holloway checked on Lily before bedtime.

Normal.

Another.

Three nights later.

Grant returned home shortly after midnight from a business trip.

He quietly entered Lily's bedroom.

He remained inside for nearly twenty minutes.

Then left.

His shoulders seemed heavier than when he had entered.

Emma lowered her eyes.

She remembered those nights.

Grant always checked on Lily after returning from overseas.

Even when exhausted.

Renata crossed her arms.

"I don't see anything suspicious."

Dawson remained silent.

He clicked forward.

The timestamp changed again.

Last Thursday.

11:43 PM.

The hallway was empty.

For several minutes...

Nothing happened.

Then...

A bedroom door slowly opened.

Not Lily's.

Renata's.

She stepped into the hallway.

She looked both directions.

As though making sure no one was watching.

Then...

She walked toward Lily's bedroom.

Emma frowned.

"Why would she..."

Renata interrupted immediately.

"I was checking on her."

Grant said nothing.

The video continued.

Renata entered Lily's room.

The timestamp advanced.

Five minutes.

Ten minutes.

Fifteen.

Twenty.

Twenty-seven minutes.

Finally...

She emerged.

But something was different.

She wasn't carrying anything.

She wasn't adjusting Lily's blanket.

She was...

Smiling.

Not warmly.

Not affectionately.

A slow...

Satisfied smile.

The kind that vanished the instant she noticed a sound downstairs.

She quickly composed herself and hurried back to her room.

The recording ended.

Silence.

Grant stared at the frozen frame.

"When was this?"

"Last Thursday."

Dawson answered.

"I checked your travel schedule."

"You were in London."

Grant nodded slowly.

"I remember."

He looked toward Renata.

"What were you doing in Lily's room for twenty-seven minutes?"

Renata barely hesitated.

"She had a nightmare."

"I comforted her."

Grant turned to Emma.

"Did Lily mention nightmares afterward?"

Emma shook her head.

"She stopped sleeping."

Everyone looked at her.

Emma continued quietly.

"Almost every night she asked to leave her bedroom light on."

"She would wake up crying."

"I thought..."

She swallowed hard.

"I thought she still missed her mother."

Grant closed his eyes.

He remembered the reports from Lily's therapist.

Night terrors increasing.

Regression.

Heightened anxiety around bedtime.

At the time...

Everyone had blamed grief.

Now...

He wasn't so sure.

Dawson cleared his throat.

"Sir..."

"There's another clip."

Grant opened his eyes.

"Play it."

The timestamp changed again.

Yesterday.

8:12 PM.

Emma left Lily's room after reading a bedtime story.

Five minutes later...

Renata appeared again.

She entered quietly.

This time...

She remained inside for only six minutes.

When she came out...

She was holding something small.

She slipped it into the pocket of her robe.

Grant paused the video.

"Zoom."

The technician enlarged the frame.

The image blurred.

But the object became recognizable.

A stuffed rabbit.

Pink.

Worn.

One of Lily's favorite toys.

Emma immediately recognized it.

"Rosie."

Grant looked at her.

"Lily sleeps with that rabbit every night."

Emma nodded.

"She cries whenever she can't find it."

Grant's eyes moved slowly toward Renata.

"Why did you take it?"

Renata looked genuinely surprised.

"I didn't."

"The video..."

"Is blurry."

"That could be anything."

Grant didn't respond.

Instead, he looked at Lily.

The little girl had been watching the screen silently.

When the rabbit appeared...

Fresh tears rolled down her cheeks.

She buried her face against Emma once more.

Grant's heart sank.

Children often lacked the words to explain abuse.

But they remembered.

In objects.

In places.

In silence.

He knelt beside his daughter.

"Lily."

His voice was barely above a whisper.

"Did someone take Rosie from you?"

The little girl nodded.

Grant continued gently.

"Was it Renata?"

Lily didn't answer immediately.

Instead...

She slowly reached into the pocket of Emma's apron.

She found a pencil lying there.

Then she reached toward the notebook resting on the coffee table.

Emma froze.

"Lily..."

For the first time in two years...

The little girl picked up the pencil.

Her hand trembled violently.

The room became perfectly still.

Very slowly...

Letter by letter...

She began to write.

Not a sentence.

Not yet.

Just three shaky words.

She comes night.

Emma's breath caught.

Grant stared at the page.

Mrs. Holloway covered her mouth.

Even Dawson looked shaken.

Lily's pencil slipped from her fingers.

She looked at her father with eyes filled with terror.

Then, with all the strength she had left...

She reached for the notebook again.

Underneath those first three words...

She wrote one more.

A name.

Basement.

Grant's face turned to stone.

Because there was only one locked basement beneath the Callahan estate.

A basement that almost no one in the house was allowed to enter.

And according to the security records...

Renata possessed one of only three keys.
