Chapter 11: The Memory She Buried

The sentence fell into the basement like a broken piece of glass.

"Emma was there..."

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The only sound was Lily's quiet crying.

Grant stared at his daughter.

Then at Emma.

Then back at Lily.

His mind refused to connect the words.

"No."

The answer came before the question.

"No, Lily."

His voice softened.

"Take your time."

"You don't have to be afraid."

Emma stood frozen.

Her face had lost all color.

"I..."

She looked at Lily.

"I don't understand."

Richard watched with a faint smile.

A smile that made Emma's stomach turn.

"Of course you don't."

"You never remembered."

Grant turned sharply toward Richard.

"What are you doing?"

Richard's expression remained calm.

"Helping you see the truth."

"You've spent years searching for monsters."

"But sometimes..."

He glanced at Emma.

"...the person who saves you today is connected to the thing that hurt you yesterday."

Emma shook her head.

"No."

"I didn't..."

She stopped.

Because something inside her mind had shifted.

A memory.

A fragment.

A night she had spent years trying not to remember.

Seven years earlier.

Before the Callahan estate.

Before Lily.

Before everything.

Emma was twenty years old.

A college student working two jobs.

A girl who believed the world was difficult but fair.

Until one rainy night changed everything.

She remembered headlights.

A mountain road.

A phone ringing.

A woman crying.

And a child.

A little girl.

Emma pressed her fingers against her forehead.

Images flashed.

Broken pieces.

A car.

Smoke.

Rain pouring down.

Her own hands shaking.

She had been driving home from visiting her mother.

She remembered seeing the accident.

She remembered stopping.

She remembered running toward the wreckage.

A woman trapped inside.

Claire Callahan.

Still alive.

Emma's breathing became uneven.

Grant noticed.

"Emma."

She looked at him.

"I..."

"I remember something."

The basement became silent.

Emma closed her eyes.

"I wasn't involved."

"I swear."

"But..."

She swallowed.

"I was there."

Grant's expression changed.

Not anger.

Shock.

"You were at the accident?"

Emma nodded slowly.

"I never told anyone."

"Why?"

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Because I was afraid."

"Afraid of what?"

Emma looked toward Lily.

"Because someone else was there first."

Everyone froze.

Richard's expression changed slightly.

Just slightly.

Emma continued.

"When I arrived..."

"The car had already crashed."

"I saw a man standing near it."

"At first I thought he was helping."

"But..."

Her voice trembled.

"He wasn't."

Grant stepped closer.

"Who was he?"

Emma looked at Richard.

The answer came quietly.

"Your father."

The basement went completely still.

Richard laughed.

A small, humorless laugh.

"Convenient."

"Now the maid remembers."

Emma ignored him.

"I didn't know who he was then."

"I only saw his face."

"He told me to leave."

"He said the police were coming."

"But..."

She looked at Lily.

"There was a little girl inside."

"I heard her crying."

"I tried to help."

Lily was watching Emma.

Not with fear.

With confusion.

Like she was trying to separate two memories.

Emma continued.

"Claire was trapped."

"She couldn't move."

"She gave me something."

Grant's eyes narrowed.

"What?"

"A necklace."

Emma reached into the collar of her shirt.

A small chain appeared.

Hanging from it was a tiny silver pendant.

Grant stared.

His breath stopped.

He knew it.

Claire had worn that necklace every day.

"Why do you have that?"

Emma touched it.

"Because she gave it to me."

"She said..."

Her voice broke.

"She said if anything happened..."

"I had to protect Lily."

Lily suddenly looked up.

A tiny whisper escaped.

"The necklace..."

Everyone turned.

Lily pointed at it.

"Mommy..."

Emma knelt.

"You remember?"

The little girl nodded.

"Mommy gave..."

She struggled.

"To Emma."

Grant looked between them.

The world seemed to tilt.

Richard's calm expression finally cracked.

Only for a second.

But Victor noticed.

"You didn't expect that."

Richard looked at him.

"Be quiet."

Victor smiled.

"Interesting."

"You thought the memory was gone."

"But Claire prepared a backup."

Grant turned toward Richard.

"What happened after the accident?"

Richard said nothing.

Grant's voice grew harder.

"What happened?"

Emma answered.

"I remember."

Everyone looked at her.

"The man took something from the car."

"A folder."

"He was looking for something."

"Then he saw me."

"He walked toward me."

"I thought he was going to hurt me."

"What happened?"

"He stopped."

Emma looked at Lily.

"Because Lily was crying."

"He looked at her."

"And for one second..."

"He hesitated."

Richard's face became unreadable.

Emma continued.

"Then another person arrived."

Grant's eyes narrowed.

"Who?"

Emma closed her eyes.

"I don't know."

"Only remember a voice."

"A woman's voice."

"She said..."

Emma's face turned pale.

"She said..."

"Get the girl away from here."

Renata suddenly stepped backward.

Everyone noticed.

Grant turned.

"Renata?"

She shook her head.

"No."

"This is impossible."

Victor stared at her.

"You know that voice."

Renata said nothing.

That silence was confirmation.

Emma continued.

"The man left."

"The woman took Lily."

"I followed."

"I wanted to help."

"But I was hit from behind."

"You were unconscious?"

Emma nodded.

"When I woke up..."

"The car was gone."

"The police were there."

"And everyone said Claire died instantly."

Grant's jaw tightened.

"That wasn't true."

"No."

Emma whispered.

"She was alive."

A painful silence followed.

Grant looked at Lily.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

The little girl lowered her eyes.

Her voice was barely audible.

"Renata said..."

She stopped.

Emma held her hand.

"It's okay."

Lily tried again.

"Renata said..."

"If I talk..."

"Daddy goes away."

Grant closed his eyes.

That sentence hurt more than anything.

His daughter had been carrying that fear alone for years.

Richard suddenly spoke.

"Enough."

Everyone turned.

His calmness was gone.

"I didn't come here to listen to old memories."

Grant stared.

"You came because you were afraid."

Richard smiled coldly.

"Afraid?"

"Of what?"

Grant stepped closer.

"That the truth would come out."

Dawson's phone suddenly rang.

He answered.

Then his face changed.

"Sir."

"What?"

"The police just arrived."

Grant frowned.

"I didn't call them."

Dawson looked toward the basement entrance.

"Someone did."

"Who?"

Dawson checked the message.

Then looked up.

"The caller identified herself as..."

He hesitated.

"Claire Callahan."

Everyone froze.

Impossible.

A dead woman.

A woman gone seven years.

A woman whose voice had already returned from a hidden recording.

Grant whispered:

"Claire..."

Then the basement speakers activated again.

A new recording began.

But this time...

it wasn't old.

It was live.

A woman's voice filled the room.

"Grant."

Everyone turned toward the speakers.

The voice continued.

"If you're hearing this..."

"Then Richard failed."

A pause.

Then:

"And if Lily is with you..."

"Tell my daughter..."

"...that Mommy kept her promise."

Grant stopped breathing.

Because the voice was not from seven years ago.

May you like

It sounded like it had been recorded today.
