Chapter 7: The Man From The Past

The name hung in the darkness like a warning.

"Victor..."

Grant Callahan had spoken the name with the same voice he used when announcing a hostile takeover.

Cold.

Controlled.

But underneath it...

Something else existed.

Recognition.

Pain.

And a memory he had buried for years.

Victor Hale stepped fully into the basement light.

He looked nothing like the desperate villain from a movie.

That was what made him more unsettling.

He wore an expensive charcoal suit.

His silver watch probably cost more than most people's yearly salary.

His hair was perfectly styled.

His expression was calm.

Almost friendly.

"Still surprised to see me?"

Victor smiled.

"After everything?"

Grant stepped forward.

"How did you get inside my house?"

Victor glanced around the basement.

"Your house?"

A quiet laugh escaped him.

"That's the interesting thing about powerful men."

"They build walls."

"They install cameras."

"They hire guards."

"But they forget the most important weakness."

Grant's eyes narrowed.

"What weakness?"

Victor looked directly at him.

"Trust."

Emma stood behind Grant, holding Lily close.

She didn't know who this man was.

But she knew one thing.

Lily was terrified.

The little girl wasn't hiding from Victor.

She was hiding from his voice.

That meant she knew him.

Emma whispered,

"Lily..."

The child grabbed her hand.

Her fingers trembled.

She slowly pointed toward Victor.

Then toward Renata.

Then she made a small motion with her hand.

A circle.

Emma frowned.

"What is she saying?"

Mrs. Holloway suddenly gasped.

Her face turned pale.

"No..."

Everyone looked at her.

"Mrs. Holloway?"

The older woman covered her mouth.

"I know that gesture."

Grant turned.

"What gesture?"

She looked at Lily.

"She used to make that when she was younger."

"Before..."

Her voice broke.

"Before the accident."

Grant's expression changed.

"What does it mean?"

Mrs. Holloway stared at Victor.

"It means..."

"Someone from before."

Victor smiled faintly.

"Interesting."

"Even after two years, the child still remembers."

Grant's voice became dangerous.

"What were you doing with my daughter?"

Victor tilted his head.

"That's the wrong question."

"The right question is..."

He looked toward Renata.

"...what was your fiancée doing with my daughter?"

Every eye moved toward Renata.

For the first time tonight...

She looked afraid.

Not angry.

Not offended.

Afraid.

"Don't listen to him."

Renata said quickly.

"He's manipulating you."

Victor laughed.

"Manipulating?"

"That's a word you should be careful with, Renata."

Her face tightened.

"Shut up."

Grant noticed.

The way she said it.

Not confusion.

Not surprise.

Fear.

They knew each other.

Grant turned slowly.

"Explain."

Renata looked at him.

"Grant..."

"Explain."

The single word stopped her.

Victor walked closer.

"Your fiancée and I have known each other for years."

Emma's eyes widened.

Grant stared at Renata.

"Is that true?"

She remained silent.

That silence answered enough.

Victor continued.

"Before she became the elegant charity princess."

"Before she wore diamonds and attended your galas."

"Renata Cole was someone else."

Renata's voice sharpened.

"Don't."

Victor ignored her.

"She was ambitious."

"Very ambitious."

"She understood something important."

"Your wife was the only person standing between her and everything you owned."

The basement became ice cold.

Grant's expression hardened.

"Be careful."

Victor smiled.

"Why?"

"Because I'm telling the truth?"

Emma looked at Grant.

His face had become unreadable.

But she noticed something.

His hands were shaking slightly.

Not from fear.

From anger.

"Victor."

Grant said quietly.

"If you know something about my wife's death..."

"I suggest you choose your next words carefully."

Victor's smile disappeared.

For the first time, his expression became serious.

"I was there."

Silence.

The entire basement stopped.

"What?"

Grant's voice was barely audible.

Victor looked toward Lily.

"Your wife wasn't supposed to die that night."

Lily immediately covered her ears.

"No..."

Emma held her.

"It's okay."

"No..."

The little girl's voice cracked.

"No mountain."

"No car."

Everyone froze.

Grant looked down.

"Lily?"

She was crying.

"Mommy..."

"Mommy said..."

She struggled.

Words fighting through years of silence.

"Mommy said..."

"Run."

Grant looked at Victor.

"What did you do?"

Victor didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he walked to the hidden room's wall.

He touched one of Lily's drawings.

"The truth is complicated."

"It always is."

Grant stepped closer.

"Try me."

Victor looked back.

"Your wife discovered something."

"Something involving Callahan Industrial Group."

"Something involving your board members."

"Something involving Renata."

Renata immediately shouted,

"He's lying!"

Victor smiled.

"Am I?"

He looked at Grant.

"Ask her why she contacted your lawyer six months before your wife's death."

Grant froze.

Emma noticed.

"Six months?"

Victor continued.

"Ask her why she secretly transferred money to offshore accounts."

"Ask her why she knew about the accident before the police report was released."

Renata's face lost all color.

Grant turned toward her.

"Renata."

"No."

Her voice was softer.

"Don't do this."

Grant stared.

"What did he mean?"

She looked away.

That was enough.

Dawson stepped forward.

"Sir."

"I need to inform you..."

"What?"

"The estate security system shows Victor's access."

Everyone turned.

Victor smiled.

"Of course."

Grant's eyes narrowed.

"You had access to my house?"

"Not recently."

Victor replied.

"Years ago."

"Before you changed everything after your wife's death."

Grant remembered.

The security system.

The renovations.

The new cameras.

All after the accident.

"How?"

Victor answered quietly.

"Because I helped design the original security network."

A terrible thought entered Grant's mind.

"The hidden room."

Victor nodded.

"Built before the accident."

"For your wife."

"She discovered things she needed to hide."

Grant looked around.

"The cameras..."

"Your wife installed them."

"No."

Grant shook his head.

"She never told me."

Victor's expression softened slightly.

"Because she was afraid."

"Of what?"

Victor looked at Renata.

"Of the person standing beside you."

Renata suddenly moved.

Fast.

Too fast.

She grabbed a small object from her purse.

Dawson reacted instantly.

"Don't move!"

Security weapons were raised.

Renata froze.

In her hand...

was a small USB drive.

Grant stared.

"What is that?"

She looked at him.

Her perfect image finally cracked.

"I was going to tell you."

"When?"

"After tonight."

Grant's voice became colder.

"After tonight's gala?"

Renata said nothing.

Victor laughed softly.

"The timing is beautiful."

"She planned to destroy Emma."

"Then use the scandal to gain sympathy."

"Then after becoming your wife..."

He looked at Grant.

"She would have access to everything."

Grant looked at the USB drive.

"What is on it?"

Renata's eyes filled with anger.

"Proof."

"Of what?"

She looked at Victor.

Then at Grant.

"That he is not the victim you think he is."

Everyone went silent.

Grant stared.

"What?"

Renata stepped forward.

"Victor Hale didn't come here to save Lily."

"He came because he wants revenge."

"And he knows exactly how to use your daughter to destroy you."

Victor's smile vanished.

For the first time...

he looked genuinely angry.

Renata held up the USB drive.

"Before you believe anyone..."

"You need to see what happened the night your wife died."

Grant looked between them.

The woman he almost married.

The man from his past.

His daughter, who had finally spoken.

Two years of unanswered questions.

And one terrible night that had shaped all their lives.

He slowly reached out.

"Give me the drive."

Renata hesitated.

Then placed it in his hand.

Grant looked at Dawson.

"Open it."

The security chief connected it to the laptop.

A single video file appeared.

Created date:

Seven years ago.

File name:

FOR GRANT.

Everyone held their breath.

Grant clicked.

The screen went black.

Then a woman's voice filled the basement.

A voice he hadn't heard in seven years.

A voice that broke him instantly.

"Grant..."

"It's me."

"Please, if you're watching this..."

"...it means I didn't make it home."

Grant stopped breathing.

Because it was his wife's voice.

May you like

And she sounded terrified.
