Chapter 1: The First Words

The silence that followed Renata's order felt heavier than stone.

Lily's tiny fingers dug deeper into Emma's apron, clutching the faded fabric with desperate strength. Her breathing came in shallow, trembling bursts against Emma's side.

Emma didn't move.

She couldn't.

The little girl's body shook so violently that letting go felt impossible.

Within seconds, hurried footsteps echoed through the hallway.

Two uniformed security guards appeared first.

Behind them came Mrs. Holloway, the house manager, her silver hair perfectly pinned despite the obvious panic in her eyes.

"What happened?" she asked.

Renata answered before anyone else could speak.

"The maid attacked me."

She held up her reddening forearm dramatically.

"I was preparing Lily for tonight's gala when she suddenly became hysterical and shoved me into the bathtub."

Her voice quivered just enough to sound believable.

"I'm worried about the child."

Emma stared at her in disbelief.

"You burned Lily's hair."

"I saw it."

Mrs. Holloway glanced toward Lily.

The blackened lock of blond hair was impossible to miss.

For the briefest moment...

...confusion crossed the older woman's face.

Renata noticed.

Immediately.

"Lily jerked while I was curling her hair."

She sighed dramatically.

"It was unfortunate."

"I've already explained that."

Emma stepped forward.

"No."

"You held the curling iron there."

"You weren't styling her."

"You were hurting her."

Renata laughed softly.

"Do you have any proof?"

Emma froze.

Proof.

There wasn't any.

The security cameras never entered the private family bathroom.

Only three people had been inside.

Emma.

Renata.

Lily.

And Lily...

...hadn't spoken a word in two years.

One guard stepped forward cautiously.

"Miss Emma..."

"I'm going to have to ask you to release the child."

"No."

Emma's answer came instantly.

Lily tightened her grip.

The child was practically climbing into Emma's arms.

Her entire body screamed terror.

Mrs. Holloway noticed it too.

"Miss Lily..."

she said gently.

"Would you like to go with Miss Renata?"

Lily didn't even look up.

Instead...

she buried her face deeper into Emma's shoulder.

The room grew quiet.

Very quiet.

Renata's smile faded for only a second.

Then she recovered.

"She's confused."

"Traumatized."

"Children cling to whoever picks them up."

Emma looked directly at the house manager.

"Please."

"Look at her scalp."

Mrs. Holloway hesitated.

Slowly...

she approached.

She carefully lifted several strands of Lily's hair.

The skin beneath was bright red.

Not blistered.

Not yet.

But angry enough that anyone could tell intense heat had touched it.

Mrs. Holloway inhaled sharply.

Renata spoke before the older woman could react.

"Exactly."

"She moved."

"The iron brushed her."

"It happens."

Emma couldn't believe what she was hearing.

"It doesn't happen because someone holds a curling iron against a child's head."

The guard's radio suddenly crackled.

"Mr. Callahan's motorcade just entered the east gate."

Everyone stopped breathing.

Grant was home.

Twenty minutes early.

Renata's expression transformed instantly.

Fear vanished.

Confidence returned.

She smoothed her robe.

Checked her makeup in the mirror.

Then...

she smiled.

Perfectly.

"Wonderful."

She looked at Emma almost sympathetically.

"You've just destroyed your own life."

Outside, engines rumbled as three black SUVs rolled across the circular driveway.

The staff throughout the mansion immediately straightened.

Doors opened.

Conversations stopped.

Every servant knew the routine.

Grant Callahan disliked disorder.

Inside the bathroom...

Emma's heart pounded harder with every approaching footstep.

She had seen Grant perhaps a dozen times over the past six months.

Always from a distance.

Always surrounded by executives, politicians, or security.

He rarely acknowledged employees beyond a polite nod.

His reputation filled newspapers.

Brilliant.

Demanding.

Cold.

A billionaire who built one of America's largest infrastructure companies before turning forty-five.

People called him impossible to deceive.

People also said he trusted almost no one.

Except Renata.

The hallway outside filled with movement.

Then...

a calm masculine voice.

"What happened?"

No shouting.

No anger.

Just quiet authority.

Grant entered the bathroom.

He was still wearing his navy business suit.

His tie had been loosened after the drive home.

A leather briefcase remained in one hand.

His eyes immediately found Lily.

Not Renata.

Not Emma.

Only Lily.

For one fleeting second...

something softened inside those steel-gray eyes.

Then he noticed the burned hair.

His face hardened.

"What happened?"

Renata crossed the room immediately.

"Grant."

She reached for his arm.

"I've had the most terrible afternoon."

Grant didn't respond.

His attention remained fixed on his daughter.

Emma noticed something.

Lily had finally looked up.

Not at Renata.

Not at anyone else.

Only at her father.

Her blue eyes filled with silent desperation.

Please.

Please see me.

Please.

Grant crouched slowly until he was level with her.

"Lily."

His voice was gentle.

"Come here."

The little girl didn't move.

Emma felt Lily trembling harder.

Grant frowned.

He extended one hand.

"Lily."

Still...

nothing.

Renata forced a nervous laugh.

"She's upset because the maid frightened her."

Grant finally looked toward Emma.

His expression revealed nothing.

"What happened?"

Emma swallowed.

"I found Miss Renata holding a curling iron against Lily's head."

"I pushed her away."

"I would do it again."

Renata gasped theatrically.

"She's lying."

Grant turned toward his fiancée.

"And you?"

"I accidentally burned a little hair while curling it."

She held up her bruised arm.

"She assaulted me."

Grant looked between both women.

Neither blinked.

The room became impossibly still.

Then...

Grant asked the one person nobody expected.

"Mrs. Holloway."

The elderly house manager stiffened.

"Sir?"

"What did you see?"

"I..."

She hesitated.

"I arrived after the incident."

"But..."

Grant waited.

She looked at Lily's scalp.

Then at Renata.

Finally at Emma.

"I did observe redness consistent with heat."

Renata interrupted immediately.

"Exactly."

"The curling iron slipped."

Mrs. Holloway continued quietly.

"But..."

"Lily refuses to leave Emma."

Grant glanced downward.

Only then did he truly notice.

Lily wasn't merely standing beside Emma.

She was hiding behind her.

As though Emma were the only safe place left in the world.

Grant slowly stood.

He walked toward his daughter.

This time...

he stopped several feet away.

He spoke softly.

"Lily."

"If Emma hurt Miss Renata..."

"Come stand beside me."

Nothing happened.

The child remained frozen.

Then Grant changed the question.

"If Emma protected you..."

His voice became almost a whisper.

"...take one step."

The room held its breath.

One second.

Two.

Three.

Then...

the impossible happened.

Lily moved.

Not toward her father.

Not toward Renata.

She reached out...

...and took Emma's hand.

Tightly.

As though letting go would mean disappearing forever.

The entire bathroom fell silent.

Grant stared at the joined hands.

His expression didn't change.

But something dangerous flickered behind his eyes.

For the first time...

he wasn't looking at the burned hair.

He wasn't looking at the bruise on Renata's arm.

He was looking at fear.

Real fear.

The kind that could never be rehearsed.

And for the very first time in two years...

his daughter lifted her eyes toward him...

opened her mouth...

and a faint, broken whisper escaped.

One word.

May you like

Barely audible.

"...Daddy..."
