Chapter 10: The Father Who Returned

For seven years...

Grant Callahan had carried a grave in his heart.

A grave with his father's name carved into it.

He had stood in the rain during Richard Callahan's funeral.

He had watched the coffin disappear beneath the earth.

He had listened as people praised a man who built an empire.

A visionary.

A businessman.

A father.

Now that same man stood in front of him.

Alive.

Older.

Calmer.

And somehow more frightening than any enemy Grant had ever faced.

"No."

Grant shook his head slowly.

"This isn't possible."

Richard smiled sadly.

"You always trusted evidence."

"That's why you became successful."

"But evidence can be created."

"Records can be changed."

"People can disappear."

His eyes moved around the basement.

"Even dead men."

Grant's hands curled into fists.

"You let me bury an empty coffin?"

Richard didn't answer.

That silence was enough.

Emma held Lily close.

The little girl was staring at Richard with pure fear.

Not confusion.

Not uncertainty.

Fear.

Emma noticed something.

Every time Lily looked at Renata...

she trembled.

But every time she looked at Richard...

she froze completely.

A child's fear had levels.

Renata had caused pain.

Richard had caused terror.

Grant stepped closer.

"Where have you been?"

Richard leaned on his cane.

"Watching."

The answer was simple.

Too simple.

"Watching what?"

"You."

"Your company."

"Your daughter."

"Your mistakes."

Grant's face hardened.

"My mistakes?"

Richard nodded.

"You became weak after Claire died."

The words struck like a slap.

Emma saw Grant's expression change.

Not anger.

Pain.

"You abandoned your position."

"You stopped trusting people."

"You let emotions control your decisions."

Richard looked toward Lily.

"And because of that..."

"...you failed to protect her."

The room went silent.

Grant looked like he had been wounded.

Because somewhere deep inside...

he feared that was true.

"No."

Emma's voice surprised everyone.

She stepped forward.

Grant looked at her.

Emma didn't lower her eyes.

"You don't get to say that."

Richard looked amused.

"And who are you?"

"The maid?"

Emma's jaw tightened.

"The person who noticed your granddaughter was afraid."

"The person who listened when nobody else did."

"The person who held her when everyone with power ignored her."

Richard stared at her.

Emma continued.

"You had money."

"You had influence."

"You had years."

"But you didn't protect her either."

The room became still.

Even Grant looked surprised.

Emma had never spoken to him like that.

But she wasn't speaking to a billionaire.

She was speaking to a man who failed a child.

Richard looked at Lily.

For a moment...

something strange appeared in his eyes.

Regret.

Then it disappeared.

"You don't understand family."

Emma replied quietly.

"No."

"I understand children."

"And children don't care about family names."

"They care about who makes them feel safe."

Victor watched the exchange silently.

Then he spoke.

"Richard."

The older man looked at him.

"Still alive."

Victor smiled coldly.

"Disappointing, isn't it?"

Richard's expression darkened.

"You were always dramatic."

"And you were always cruel."

Victor stepped forward.

"The difference is..."

"I admitted what I was."

"You hid behind the Callahan name."

Grant turned toward Victor.

"You knew?"

Victor nodded.

"Not everything."

"But enough."

"Richard discovered Claire's investigation."

"He wanted the evidence."

"Claire refused."

Grant's voice became low.

"What happened that night?"

Victor looked at him.

"I'll tell you."

"But you need to hear it from the person who planned it."

Everyone looked toward Richard.

Richard sighed.

"Claire was intelligent."

"Too intelligent."

"She found financial records proving several board members were stealing from the company."

Grant frowned.

"Why would you care?"

Richard looked at him.

"Because those board members were destroying everything I built."

"So you helped her?"

Richard's expression hardened.

"No."

"I tried to control the situation."

Grant stared.

"You mean you tried to silence her."

Richard didn't deny it.

The words were poison.

Emma watched Grant absorb every sentence.

His father.

The person who taught him how to negotiate.

How to lead.

How to win.

Was admitting he had destroyed the one person Grant loved most.

Richard continued.

"Claire recorded everything."

"She planned to expose everyone."

"Your company."

"The board."

"Me."

"She believed truth would save the family."

A bitter smile crossed his face.

"She never understood that truth destroys families too."

Grant's voice was barely controlled.

"You caused the accident."

Richard looked away.

A small movement.

But enough.

Grant saw it.

"Answer me."

Richard remained silent.

"ANSWER ME!"

The entire basement shook with Grant's voice.

Lily flinched.

Immediately, Grant stopped.

His expression changed.

He looked at his daughter.

"I'm sorry."

He lowered his voice.

"I'm sorry."

Lily watched him.

Then slowly reached for his hand.

A tiny gesture.

But it meant everything.

Richard noticed.

"Interesting."

"What?"

"She trusts you again."

Grant looked at him.

"Because I changed."

Richard laughed softly.

"No."

"Because someone else taught her what trust feels like."

His eyes moved toward Emma.

"That woman."

"The maid."

"She ruined everything."

Emma frowned.

"What?"

Richard smiled.

"Renata was supposed to make Lily afraid."

"Fear keeps children quiet."

"But then you appeared."

"And Lily started talking."

He looked almost fascinated.

"You broke the system."

Grant's blood ran cold.

"The system?"

Richard glanced toward the hidden room.

"The cameras."

"The recordings."

"The basement."

"Everything had a purpose."

"What purpose?"

Richard answered calmly.

"Control."

He pointed toward Lily.

"Children are easier to control than adults."

"No."

Grant's voice became dangerous.

"You don't get to talk about my daughter like that."

Richard ignored him.

"Renata was impatient."

"She wanted money."

"Power."

"Your name."

"But she lacked discipline."

Grant looked at Renata.

She looked down.

For the first time...

she seemed ashamed.

Richard continued.

"I needed someone closer."

Grant froze.

"What does that mean?"

Richard smiled.

"Think carefully."

"I needed someone who could enter this house."

"Someone you trusted."

"Someone who could influence Lily."

Grant's eyes widened.

"No..."

Emma looked between them.

"What?"

Richard said the words slowly.

"Renata was never the beginning."

"She was only a tool."

A terrible silence followed.

Grant whispered,

"Then who..."

Richard looked directly at Emma.

Not at Lily.

Not at Victor.

At Emma.

And smiled.

"The person who started all of this..."

"...has been standing beside you the entire time."

Everyone turned.

Emma froze.

"What?"

Richard's smile widened.

"You really don't know, do you?"

Grant immediately stepped between them.

"Stay away from her."

Richard laughed.

"Still protecting strangers."

"Even now."

Dawson raised his weapon.

"Enough."

But Richard wasn't looking at the guards.

He was looking at Lily.

And Lily was looking back.

Terrified.

Then Richard spoke softly.

"Tell them, Lily."

The little girl's face went pale.

"Tell your father who brought you to the basement first."

Emma felt her heart stop.

Grant turned slowly toward Lily.

"Lily?"

The child began crying.

Her eyes moved toward Emma.

Then away.

Like she was fighting a memory.

A horrible memory.

Finally...

with a shaking voice...

she whispered:

"Emma..."

Everyone froze.

Lily grabbed her father's hand.

And said the sentence that changed everything.

"Emma was there..."

May you like

"...the night Mommy died."
