Chapter 6: The Room Without Windows

The glowing keypad stared back at them from inside the hidden compartment.
A tiny red light blinked.
Waiting.
Waiting for someone who knew the code.
Grant stood in front of the safe without moving.
His mind was racing through possibilities.
Who had built this room?
Who had used it?
How long had Lily been brought here?
And the question that hurt the most...
How had he never known?
"Dawson."
"Yes, sir?"
"Open it."
The security chief examined the safe.
"I'll need some equipment."
"How long?"
"Twenty minutes."
Grant looked at the keypad again.
"No."
He pointed toward the screen.
"Someone programmed this to be opened."
"Find out who."
Dawson connected a small device.
After several seconds, his expression changed.
"Sir..."
"What?"
"This isn't a normal safe."
Grant turned.
"What do you mean?"
"It's connected to the house network."
A chill moved through the room.
"Someone could monitor it remotely."
Dawson nodded.
"Yes."
Emma looked around the hidden room.
"So someone knew if we opened it?"
"Possibly."
The thought made Lily grab Emma's hand again.
She looked toward the ceiling.
Searching.
Afraid.
Emma followed her gaze.
"What is it?"
Lily pointed upward.
Everyone looked.
A small black circle was almost invisible in the corner.
A camera.
Another one.
Grant's expression became frighteningly calm.
"There are two cameras."
Dawson immediately scanned the room.
"One in the corner."
"One behind the bookshelf."
"Both active."
Renata suddenly spoke.
"You're all acting like I'm responsible for this."
Nobody answered.
She stepped closer.
"This room existed before I came into this family."
Grant looked at her.
"Then explain why your key opened it."
"I can't."
"Exactly."
Her jaw tightened.
"You are letting a maid manipulate you."
Emma stared at her.
"Manipulate?"
Renata smiled coldly.
"Yes."
"You think she saved Lily because she's noble?"
"You think she doesn't want something?"
Emma felt anger rise.
But before she could respond...
Grant spoke.
"Enough."
One word.
Quiet.
Powerful.
Renata stopped.
Because Grant's tone had changed.
Not angry.
Not emotional.
Something worse.
Disappointed.
Dawson looked up from his device.
"Sir."
"I accessed the camera feed."
"Live?"
"No."
"Archived."
Grant turned.
"Show me."
The laptop screen changed.
A list of dates appeared.
Hundreds of recordings.
Months.
Maybe years.
Everyone became silent.
Dawson selected the newest file.
Yesterday.
8:12 PM.
The same night Renata entered Lily's bedroom.
The video began.
The angle was different.
This camera was inside the hidden room.
The room they were standing in.
The footage showed Renata entering.
She wasn't alone.
She carried Lily's pink rabbit.
The same rabbit now held tightly in Lily's arms.
Renata placed the toy on the cot.
Then she looked directly at the camera.
Almost as if she knew someone was watching.
She smiled.
And said something.
The audio was weak.
Dawson increased the volume.
Static filled the room.
Then...
Renata's voice became clear.
"You know what happens when people don't listen."
Everyone froze.
Lily immediately covered her ears.
Emma pulled her closer.
Grant's face changed.
"Stop."
Dawson paused.
But Grant continued.
"Play it."
His voice was barely controlled.
Dawson restarted.
Renata continued speaking to someone off camera.
"Your father believes you forgot."
"He believes silence means healing."
She walked closer to the camera.
"But silence means fear."
A pause.
Then she smiled.
"Fear is much easier to control."
Emma felt sick.
Grant's hands tightened into fists.
The video continued.
Renata sat on the small chair.
She held Lily's rabbit.
"You want Rosie back?"
A child could be heard crying.
The sound was faint.
But unmistakable.
Lily.
The little girl in Emma's arms began shaking.
Grant closed his eyes for one second.
Then opened them.
The pain there was almost impossible to look at.
On screen, Renata leaned forward.
"You know the rule."
"No talking."
"No telling Daddy."
"Good girls keep secrets."
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
Not even Renata.
For once...
she had no words.
Grant looked at his daughter.
The little girl was crying silently.
But there was something different.
She wasn't frozen anymore.
She was remembering.
And remembering hurt.
Emma whispered,
"Lily..."
The child slowly looked up.
Emma gently touched her shoulder.
"You don't have to be scared anymore."
Lily stared at her.
Then at her father.
Grant lowered himself to his knees.
For the first time, the billionaire chairman of Callahan Industrial Group looked completely broken.
Not weak.
Broken.
"I'm sorry."
The words surprised everyone.
Especially Emma.
Grant continued.
"I should have seen."
"I should have protected you."
Lily's lips trembled.
She stared at him.
Then slowly...
she walked forward.
Every step was uncertain.
Every step carried two years of fear.
Finally...
she reached him.
Grant opened his arms.
But he didn't grab her.
He waited.
Giving her the choice.
After a long moment...
Lily stepped into his embrace.
Grant held his daughter carefully.
Like she was something fragile that could disappear.
His eyes closed.
A single tear escaped.
No one in the room mentioned it.
No one dared.
Then Dawson's computer made a sound.
A notification.
Everyone turned.
Dawson looked confused.
"Sir..."
"What now?"
"The camera system just received a remote command."
Grant stood immediately.
"From where?"
Dawson checked.
His face changed.
"Outside the estate."
"Can you trace it?"
"I'm trying."
The screen filled with numbers.
Then one line appeared.
ACCESS GRANTED
Dawson stared.
"Sir..."
"What?"
"The person controlling these cameras..."
"...has administrator access."
Grant's expression hardened.
"Whose account?"
Dawson hesitated.
Then answered.
"Yours."
Silence.
"My account?"
"Yes."
"Someone used your credentials."
Grant looked around the hidden room.
The cameras.
The drawings.
The locked door.
The child's chair.
Someone had planned all of this.
And they had done it using his identity.
Emma whispered,
"So someone wanted you to look guilty?"
Grant didn't answer.
Because another possibility had just entered his mind.
A far more terrifying one.
Someone wasn't only hiding what happened to Lily.
Someone had been preparing to destroy him.
Suddenly...
The basement lights flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then went completely dark.
Lily screamed.
Not a silent cry.
Not a whisper.
A real scream.
The first full sound she had made in two years.
"NO!"
Everyone froze.
Because from somewhere in the darkness...
A man's voice answered.
Calm.
Close.
Almost amused.
"Still afraid of the dark, Lily?"
Emma's blood turned cold.
Grant pulled Lily behind him.
"Dawson."
The security chief raised his flashlight.
"Everyone stay back."
The beam cut through the darkness.
Empty corridor.
No one.
Then...
a slow clap echoed from the far end of the basement.
One.
Two.
Three.
A figure stepped into the light.
A man wearing a black suit.
A man nobody expected to see.
Grant's face went completely still.
Because he knew him.
Everyone in the Callahan family knew him.
The man smiled.
"Hello, Grant."
"It's been a long time."
Grant whispered one name.
"Victor..."
May you like
The man smiled wider.
"And I see you've finally started asking the right questions."
