Chapter 14: The Last Player

The video screen flickered.
Daniel Cross appeared.
The man Grant had trusted for seven years.
The man who had sat beside him during board meetings.
The man who had helped him rebuild the company after losing Claire.
The man who had comforted him when he thought his wife was gone forever.
Now...
that same man looked directly into the camera with a calm expression.
Almost peaceful.
"Grant."
Daniel smiled faintly.
"If you are seeing this, then congratulations."
"You finally found the truth."
Nobody in the basement moved.
Not even Richard.
Not even Renata.
Because everyone understood.
This was the final piece.
The last hidden door.
Daniel continued.
"I know what you're thinking."
"How could I?"
"How could someone who stood beside you for years betray you?"
He paused.
"That's the wrong question."
"The right question is..."
"Why did you trust me?"
Grant's expression darkened.
Emma looked at him.
She could see the pain behind his eyes.
Not because Daniel betrayed his company.
Because Daniel betrayed his friendship.
Daniel leaned closer to the camera.
"Your father built an empire."
"But he also built a prison."
"He believed everyone had a price."
"Money."
"Power."
"Fear."
"He was wrong about one thing."
A small smile appeared.
"Some people don't want money."
"Some people want control."
Richard stared at the screen.
"You..."
Daniel continued.
"Richard taught me everything."
"How to negotiate."
"How to manipulate."
"How to hide."
"But eventually..."
"I became better than my teacher."
Richard's face turned cold.
"You arrogant child."
Daniel laughed.
"You still don't understand."
"You thought you were controlling the game."
"But you were only one player."
Grant looked between them.
"What did you do?"
Daniel answered as if he could hear him.
"I saved Callahan Industrial."
Everyone froze.
"You destroyed it."
Grant's voice was quiet.
"No."
Daniel shook his head.
"I removed the weak pieces."
"The board members."
"Your father."
"Claire."
"Everyone who stood between me and the future."
Emma felt sick.
"So you killed her?"
Daniel looked directly into the camera.
"I didn't kill Claire."
A pause.
"I created the situation."
The words were worse.
Grant's eyes filled with fury.
"You caused the accident."
Daniel didn't answer.
He didn't need to.
Claire's voice suddenly came through the speakers.
"Grant."
Everyone turned.
The live connection had returned.
Claire looked devastated.
"Don't listen to him."
Daniel smiled.
"Still trying to save him."
Claire looked at the screen.
"You always underestimated him."
Daniel laughed.
"Did I?"
He looked at Grant.
"Look at what happened."
"His wife disappeared."
"His daughter became silent."
"His company nearly collapsed."
"And he still believed he could fix everything."
Grant stepped closer to the screen.
"You used me."
Daniel smiled sadly.
"No."
"I used your grief."
The sentence struck harder than anything else.
"You were broken."
"You needed someone."
"I became that person."
"I became the voice telling you what decisions to make."
"The person you trusted."
"The person you never questioned."
Renata suddenly spoke.
"Daniel..."
Everyone looked at her.
She looked exhausted.
"You said you would protect me."
Daniel looked at her through the screen.
"I did."
"No."
Her voice shook.
"You used me."
"Yes."
The answer came immediately.
No hesitation.
Renata closed her eyes.
The truth finally arrived.
Grant stared at her.
"You knew about everything."
Renata whispered,
"Not everything."
"At first..."
"I only wanted money."
"I wanted your life."
"Your name."
"Your power."
"But Daniel..."
She looked at the screen.
"He made sure I couldn't leave."
Emma frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Renata laughed bitterly.
"He recorded everything."
"Every conversation."
"Every mistake."
"He kept proof."
"Because he never trusted anyone."
Daniel smiled.
"Smart people don't trust."
"They prepare."
Victor stepped forward.
"You sound exactly like Richard."
Daniel's expression changed.
"Be careful."
Victor smiled.
"That's what you hate."
"What?"
"That you're not special."
"You are just another version of him."
The words clearly hit a nerve.
Suddenly...
The basement doors opened.
Security alarms exploded throughout the mansion.
Dawson checked his device.
"Sir!"
"We have a problem."
"What?"
"The police are surrounding the estate."
Grant frowned.
"Who called them?"
Dawson looked at the screen.
"The report says..."
He stopped.
"What?"
Dawson looked up.
"The caller was Daniel Cross."
Everyone went silent.
Daniel smiled.
"Of course."
Grant stared.
"Why?"
"Because now..."
Daniel looked directly at him.
"...the final act begins."
Outside the basement, sirens grew louder.
Red and blue lights flashed through the mansion windows.
Daniel continued.
"Grant."
"You have spent seven years believing you lost everything."
"But you never understood."
"Loss creates opportunity."
He leaned back.
"The company."
"The inheritance."
"The Callahan name."
"All of it can be rebuilt."
"But only if you accept one thing."
Grant's eyes narrowed.
"What?"
Daniel smiled.
"You cannot save everyone."
A loud crash echoed from upstairs.
Everyone turned.
Dawson immediately moved.
"Someone is inside the mansion."
Grant looked toward the ceiling.
The estate was supposed to be secure.
Impossible.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A familiar voice spoke.
"Grant."
Claire.
But she sounded terrified.
"Listen carefully."
"They are not coming for the company."
Grant froze.
"What?"
"They are coming for Lily."
The room went silent.
Emma immediately pulled Lily closer.
Claire continued.
"Daniel knows the archive survived."
"He knows the evidence exists."
"And he knows the only person who can expose everything..."
"...is your daughter."
Grant looked at Lily.
The little girl who had carried the truth for seven years.
The child everyone underestimated.
A shadow appeared at the basement entrance.
Someone standing there.
Someone holding a gun.
Dawson raised his weapon.
"Don't move!"
The figure stepped into the light.
It wasn't Daniel.
It wasn't Richard.
It wasn't Renata.
It was one of the mansion guards.
A man who had worked for the Callahan family for years.
He looked nervous.
Terrified.
"I'm sorry."
Grant stared.
"What did you do?"
The guard lowered his eyes.
"They have my family."
A moment later...
the lights went out.
Again.
And in the darkness...
a small voice whispered.
"Lily."
Everyone froze.
Because the voice came from inside the basement.
Someone was already there.
Someone had entered without anyone noticing.
Emma tightened her grip around Lily.
Then a hand reached out from the darkness.
May you like
And grabbed the little girl's shoulder.
