Chapter 8: The Hunter Becomes the Prey

The call ended.

Marcus lowered the phone slowly.

The silence inside the hidden archive felt heavier than concrete.

Richard Bennett stared at the photograph pinned to the investigation board.

NEXT IS HIM.

It wasn't a threat written in anger.

It was a schedule.

Victor Hale wasn't improvising.

He was executing a plan that had been designed years in advance.

Richard turned toward Marcus.

"We need to find your father before Victor does."

Marcus was already dialing Jonathan's number again.

One ring.

Two.

Three.

Voicemail.

He tried again.

Nothing.

Thirty Minutes Earlier

Jonathan Thorne drove alone through the city's empty streets.

Rain streaked across the windshield.

His phone rested on the passenger seat, vibrating every few minutes with missed calls he ignored.

He already knew Marcus would eventually discover the hidden room.

That was why he had left.

Some truths could only be faced by the people who created them.

Jonathan stopped at a red light.

His eyes drifted toward the rearview mirror.

A black sedan had been behind him for nearly fifteen minutes.

It hadn't tried to overtake him.

It simply followed.

The traffic light turned green.

Jonathan accelerated.

The sedan accelerated.

His grip tightened on the steering wheel.

"So..."

He whispered to himself.

"It finally begins."

Bennett Medical Center

Khloe woke suddenly.

Her breathing was calm now.

The pain had eased.

The baby's heartbeat echoed steadily through the monitor.

Beep...

Beep...

Beep...

A nurse smiled.

"The baby's doing well."

Khloe nodded gratefully.

Then she noticed something strange.

One of the security guards outside her room had changed.

The previous guard had been tall with gray hair.

Now a younger man stood there.

She frowned.

"Where's Officer Harris?"

The nurse hesitated.

"He... switched shifts."

Khloe looked at the clock.

It was only 1:30 a.m.

The shift wasn't scheduled to change until six.

Something felt wrong.

Very wrong.

Underground Parking Garage

Jonathan pulled into the deserted parking structure beneath an old riverside warehouse.

The black sedan followed.

He parked.

Turned off the engine.

And waited.

Thirty seconds later...

The sedan stopped three spaces away.

Its headlights remained on.

A man stepped out holding an umbrella.

Not a gun.

Not a knife.

Just an umbrella.

Jonathan recognized him immediately.

"David."

The man removed his glasses.

His hair had turned almost completely white.

"It's been a long time."

David Mercer.

Former chief financial officer of the original partnership.

The fifth man.

The only person never mentioned in Jonathan's letter.

Jonathan's expression hardened.

"I thought Victor killed you."

David smiled sadly.

"He tried."

Hidden Archive

Richard searched through the filing cabinets.

Years of financial records.

Personal journals.

Private correspondence.

Every drawer contained another piece of history.

Marcus opened a metal box labeled:

PROJECT PHOENIX

Inside were dozens of cassette tapes.

Old photographs.

Audio transcripts.

One envelope carried a handwritten note.

Evidence Never Submitted

Marcus opened it.

His eyes widened.

Inside lay a signed confession.

Anthony Rossi's signature.

Dated twenty-three years earlier.

But the words weren't a confession to fraud.

They were a confession to lying.

Anthony had admitted...

He had falsely accepted responsibility to protect someone else.

Marcus read the final paragraph aloud.

"Jonathan is innocent of this crime. Richard is innocent. I signed because Victor threatened my daughter. If I refused, Isabella would disappear before sunrise."

Marcus looked up.

His voice barely worked.

"My father never knew."

Richard slowly shook his head.

"No."

"He believed Anthony betrayed him."

Marcus clenched the paper tightly.

"Victor destroyed both families."

The Warehouse

Rain drummed against the metal roof.

Jonathan and David stood facing each other.

Years of silence separated them.

David finally spoke.

"Victor knows Marcus found the archive."

"I expected that."

"He also knows Khloe survived."

Jonathan closed his eyes briefly.

"And Isabella?"

David looked away.

"She's alive."

"For now."

Jonathan noticed the hesitation.

"What aren't you telling me?"

David took a slow breath.

"Victor doesn't care about Isabella anymore."

"He never did."

"She was just leverage."

Jonathan nodded grimly.

"I know."

David stepped closer.

"You don't."

Jonathan frowned.

"What do you mean?"

David reached into his coat.

Jonathan instinctively tensed.

Instead of a weapon...

David produced an old photograph.

It showed five people standing together outside a tiny investment office.

Jonathan.

Richard.

Anthony.

Victor.

And...

A young woman Marcus had never seen.

Jonathan's face lost all color.

"No..."

David nodded.

"Yes."

"She survived."

Jonathan whispered the name as if speaking to a ghost.

"Claire..."

Hospital Recovery Wing

Khloe couldn't shake the feeling that someone was watching her.

She pressed the nurse call button.

A different nurse entered.

"Can I help you?"

Khloe forced a smile.

"Could you close the blinds?"

"Of course."

The nurse walked toward the window.

As she reached for the curtains...

She froze.

Outside, across the courtyard...

On the roof of the parking structure...

Someone stood perfectly still in the rain.

Watching the hospital.

Watching Khloe's room.

The figure wore a long black coat.

Its face was hidden beneath the hood.

The nurse blinked.

The figure was gone.

Headquarters

Marcus's phone buzzed again.

A text message.

No number.

No sender.

Just an image.

It was a live photograph.

Jonathan stood inside the warehouse.

The timestamp showed it had been taken less than thirty seconds earlier.

Beneath the image appeared a single sentence.

YOU'RE ALREADY TOO LATE.

Marcus's heart pounded.

"Richard!"

Richard looked up.

Marcus handed him the phone.

Richard immediately called the cybersecurity team.

"Trace the metadata!"

The technician's fingers flew across the keyboard.

"I've got GPS coordinates!"

Marcus leaned forward.

"Where?"

The technician looked up.

"Riverside Industrial District."

Marcus was already moving.

"Let's go."

The Warehouse

Jonathan looked at Claire's photograph.

His hands trembled.

"I buried her."

David's eyes filled with regret.

"No."

"You buried an empty coffin."

Jonathan stared at him.

"Victor staged the explosion."

"For twenty-three years..."

"Claire has been alive."

Jonathan's voice cracked for the first time in decades.

"Where is she?"

David answered quietly.

"I don't know."

"But Victor does."

A metallic click echoed through the warehouse.

Jonathan and David turned simultaneously.

Several red laser dots appeared across their chests.

One.

Three.

Seven.

Twelve.

Snipers.

A familiar voice echoed through the darkness.

"You always were sentimental, Jonathan."

Victor Hale stepped from the shadows, slow applause echoing through the warehouse.

He smiled with the confidence of a man who believed he had already won.

"I've been waiting for this reunion."

Jonathan looked him directly in the eyes.

"Leave my son out of this."

Victor's smile widened.

"I'm afraid that's no longer possible."

Then he lifted a small remote control.

On its screen...

A blinking red timer began counting down.

09:59

David's eyes widened in horror.

"Victor..."

"You didn't..."

Victor chuckled.

"I filled the entire warehouse with explosives."

Outside...

Marcus's SUV skidded around the final corner.

He could already see the warehouse in the distance.

And above its roof...

May you like

A single red warning light had begun flashing.
