Chapter 10: A Father's Choice

Marcus stared at the message on his phone.
Khloe isn't alone anymore. Hurry.
For a single, unbearable second, the world split into two impossible choices.
His father.
His wife.
Richard saw the conflict in Marcus's eyes.
"Go."
Marcus looked at him.
"What?"
"Go to Khloe."
Richard's voice was calm.
"I'll handle Victor."
Marcus shook his head.
"I can't leave you."
"You can."
Richard gripped Marcus's shoulder.
"Your father spent twenty-three years trying to protect his family."
"Tonight..."
"...you do the same."
Marcus hesitated.
Gunfire echoed above them.
The countdown still ticked somewhere inside the warehouse.
Finally, Marcus nodded.
"I'm coming back."
Richard gave a faint smile.
"I know."
Marcus turned and sprinted back toward the drainage tunnel.
Bennett Medical Center
The woman dressed as a nurse slowly raised the syringe.
Khloe's breathing remained steady.
Fear would only make things worse for the baby.
She forced herself to think.
Observe.
Wait.
The fake nurse stepped closer.
"It won't hurt."
Khloe answered quietly.
"You aren't a nurse."
The woman smiled.
"No."
"I was a nurse."
"Once."
She flicked the syringe gently.
Tiny droplets sprayed into the air.
"You'd be surprised how useful medical training becomes."
Khloe glanced toward the IV monitor.
The woman noticed.
"Looking for help?"
"No one can hear you."
Khloe looked back at her.
"You won't leave this hospital."
The woman laughed softly.
"You sound just like Jonathan."
Khloe froze.
"You know Jonathan?"
"I've known him much longer than you have."
The Warehouse
Richard climbed the maintenance ladder.
He quietly pushed open the hatch.
The battle had already begun.
Jonathan struggled with Victor across the concrete floor.
David crawled toward the fallen remote.
Armed guards searched frantically.
None of them noticed Richard emerging from below.
Richard drew his sidearm.
"Freeze!"
Every head turned.
Victor smiled.
"Richard."
"You always arrive exactly on time."
Richard kept the weapon trained on him.
"It's over."
Victor slowly raised both hands.
"Is it?"
He glanced toward the countdown.
01:48
Jonathan shouted,
"Richard!"
"The remote!"
David reached it first.
He grabbed the device.
Victor's smile vanished.
"Don't."
David looked down.
The display showed two buttons.
RED
BLUE
No instructions.
No labels.
David swallowed.
"Which one?"
Victor laughed.
"You have fifty-forty odds."
Richard's eyes narrowed.
"Don't touch anything."
Hospital Entrance
Marcus's SUV roared into the emergency entrance.
He didn't park.
He abandoned the vehicle halfway across the driveway.
Security guards recognized him immediately.
"Mr. Thorne!"
Marcus was already running.
"My wife!"
The elevator felt impossibly slow.
He slammed the emergency override.
The doors closed.
The elevator climbed.
Every second felt stolen.
Recovery Suite
The fake nurse stepped beside Khloe's bed.
She reached for Khloe's IV line.
"I'm sorry."
"For what?"
"For involving the child."
Something in her voice sounded different.
Not cruel.
Regretful.
Khloe noticed.
"You don't want to do this."
The woman hesitated.
Only for a heartbeat.
Then she whispered,
"I don't have a choice."
Khloe looked directly into her eyes.
"Everyone has a choice."
The woman's hand trembled.
Memories flashed across her face.
Years of obedience.
Years of fear.
Years of following Victor Hale.
Then...
The room's silence shattered.
The door exploded inward.
Marcus charged inside.
"Get away from her!"
The woman spun.
Instead of attacking...
She stepped backward.
Marcus placed himself between her and Khloe.
Hospital security flooded into the room seconds later.
Weapons drawn.
The woman slowly placed the syringe on the floor.
She raised her hands.
"I surrender."
Everyone froze.
Marcus frowned.
"What?"
The woman looked at him with exhausted eyes.
"I'm done running."
The Warehouse
The countdown reached:
00:54
David still held the remote.
His hands shook violently.
Jonathan looked toward Victor.
"Tell us which button."
Victor smiled.
"Trust me."
Jonathan answered,
"I did."
"Twenty-three years ago."
"I won't make that mistake again."
Richard carefully examined the remote.
Something felt wrong.
Too simple.
Victor loved complexity.
He looked around the warehouse.
His eyes stopped on the steel vault.
Then on the blinking explosives fixed to the support columns.
Suddenly...
He understood.
"The remote isn't connected to the bombs."
Everyone stared at him.
Richard spoke louder.
"It's a distraction!"
Victor's smile widened.
"Congratulations."
Richard turned toward David.
"Open the vault!"
"What?"
"Now!"
David dropped the remote and pulled the massive vault handle.
It swung open.
Inside...
There were no documents.
No files.
No evidence.
Only a large digital screen.
As the vault opened...
The countdown instantly stopped.
00:41
SYSTEM DISARMED
Jonathan blinked.
"The explosives..."
Richard nodded.
"They were wired to the vault."
"If we'd pressed either button..."
He looked toward Victor.
"...we would have armed the real detonator."
Victor slowly applauded.
"Brilliant."
"You always were the clever one."
Police sirens echoed outside.
Blue lights flashed through the warehouse windows.
Victor looked toward the exit.
Then back at Jonathan.
"This isn't over."
Jonathan answered calmly.
"No."
"It ends tonight."
Victor smiled one last time.
"You still don't know everything."
Before anyone could react...
He threw a small metal sphere onto the floor.
Smoke exploded through the warehouse.
Visibility vanished.
Gunfire erupted.
Shouting echoed everywhere.
When the smoke finally cleared...
Victor Hale was gone.
Hospital Recovery Suite
The woman sat quietly in handcuffs.
She watched Marcus hold Khloe tightly.
Neither of them noticed her tears.
A detective entered.
"What's your name?"
She remained silent.
The detective tried again.
"Who do you work for?"
Still nothing.
Finally...
Khloe spoke gently.
"You said you used to be a nurse."
The woman looked up.
"My name..."
She paused.
"...is Claire."
Jonathan's letter flashed through Marcus's mind.
The photograph.
The missing woman.
The name David had whispered.
Marcus stared at her in disbelief.
"Claire?"
The woman nodded slowly.
"My full name..."
She took a shaky breath.
"...is Claire Hale."
Richard's voice echoed through Marcus's phone at that exact moment.
"Marcus..."
"We've confirmed Victor escaped."
Marcus looked at the handcuffed woman.
"I think..."
"...he left someone behind."
Claire closed her eyes.
Then she whispered the sentence that changed the investigation forever.
"Victor isn't my brother."
Marcus frowned.
"Then who is he?"
Claire opened her eyes.
May you like
"My father."
