Chapter 2: The Footage That Changed Everything

The executive surveillance room sat three floors beneath the luxury wing.

No windows.

No decorations.

Only walls lined with encrypted servers and a row of massive monitors displaying every corridor, operating theater, elevator, and private suite inside Bennett Medical Center.

Few people were ever allowed inside.

Tonight, the room felt less like a hospital facility and more like a courtroom preparing to deliver judgment.

Richard Bennett entered first.

Marcus followed without saying a word.

Elaine Parker came next, still visibly shaken.

Behind them, the hospital's chief legal counsel, head of security, and the director of risk management quietly took their seats.

Outside the reinforced steel door, Isabella waited under constant supervision.

Two armed security officers stood beside her.

She was not handcuffed.

She didn't need to be.

Every elevator on the executive floor remained locked.

Every exit required Richard Bennett's biometric authorization.

She wasn't leaving.

Not tonight.

Meanwhile...

Three floors above...

Khloe lay inside Operating Suite Seven.

Bright surgical lights reflected across stainless steel instruments while specialists worked around her.

The fetal monitor continued its relentless rhythm.

Beep...

Beep...

Beep...

Dr. Amelia Grant, the hospital's chief maternal-fetal specialist, studied the ultrasound carefully.

"There."

She pointed toward the monitor.

"A partial placental separation."

Another doctor inhaled sharply.

"How severe?"

"Small."

"But unstable."

A nurse looked toward Khloe.

"Mrs. Thorne, can you hear me?"

Khloe nodded weakly.

"We're going to keep you completely still."

"The baby's heartbeat is recovering."

"But any additional stress could make this much worse."

Khloe closed her eyes.

Only one thought echoed inside her mind.

Please...

Hold on...

Just hold on.

Back downstairs...

The surveillance technician inserted a biometric key into the secure server.

"Recording verified."

"No interruptions."

"No missing frames."

"No edits."

Richard folded his arms.

"Play it."

The monitor flickered.

The timestamp appeared.

8:41 PM.

The suite was empty.

Two minutes later...

Khloe entered alone.

She looked exhausted.

Still wearing the elegant ivory maternity gown from the charity gala, she gently removed her heels and rubbed her lower back.

She smiled faintly as she rested both hands on her stomach.

Marcus stared silently at the screen.

He remembered taking photographs with donors downstairs.

He had promised he'd join her in five minutes.

Five minutes.

That promise now felt unbearable.

The recording continued.

8:44 PM.

The suite door opened again.

Isabella stepped inside.

Confident.

Elegant.

Completely composed.

She quietly locked the door behind her.

Elaine frowned.

"I never noticed she locked it."

No one answered.

On-screen...

Khloe turned.

Surprised.

"Isabella?"

There was no fear in her voice.

Only confusion.

Isabella smiled warmly.

The same smile that had appeared on magazine covers for years.

"I thought we should finally talk."

Khloe sighed.

"I'm tired."

"Can this wait?"

"No."

The smile disappeared instantly.

Like someone flipping a switch.

Even Marcus leaned forward.

He had never seen Isabella's expression change so quickly.

She slowly walked closer.

Every heel click echoed through the surveillance speakers.

"I've waited long enough."

Khloe crossed her arms protectively over her stomach.

"What do you want?"

Isabella laughed.

"I want my life back."

"You stole it."

Khloe blinked.

"I don't even know what you're talking about."

"You married Marcus."

"You built the family that should have been mine."

Marcus frowned.

"What?"

Elaine looked toward him.

"You never knew?"

Marcus slowly shook his head.

The room became even quieter.

On the monitor...

Khloe took a careful step backward.

"Isabella..."

"You're confused."

"No."

"I'm finally honest."

Isabella continued walking.

"When Marcus's father rejected my family fifteen years ago..."

"Everything changed."

"My father lost everything."

"My mother drank herself to death."

"Our name disappeared while yours became untouchable."

Marcus stared at the screen.

His breathing slowed.

His father...

He had never mentioned any of this.

Not once.

The footage continued.

"I spent fifteen years watching your perfect little world."

"I watched your engagement."

"Your wedding."

"Every anniversary."

"Every magazine interview."

"And now..."

She looked directly at Khloe's stomach.

"...the heir."

Khloe instinctively placed both hands over her baby.

"Don't."

"I've done nothing to you."

"You exist."

"That's enough."

Elaine covered her mouth.

"My God..."

The legal counsel quietly began taking notes.

Every sentence carried motive.

Intent.

Premeditation.

Then the recording reached the moment that changed everything.

Khloe spoke softly.

"If you hate me..."

"Fine."

"But leave my child out of this."

Isabella smiled.

Cold.

Almost fascinated.

"You still don't understand."

"I never wanted to hurt the child."

Marcus frowned.

Richard's eyes narrowed.

Then Isabella delivered a sentence that froze everyone inside the room.

"I only needed the baby to disappear."

Silence.

No one moved.

The surveillance technician accidentally stopped typing.

Elaine's face turned white.

Marcus's jaw tightened so hard the muscles in his neck visibly flexed.

Richard quietly said,

"Continue."

The footage rolled forward.

Khloe whispered,

"You're insane."

"I gave you every chance."

"You could have divorced Marcus."

"You could have walked away."

"You chose comfort."

"You chose his money."

Khloe shook her head.

"I married him because I love him."

"No."

"You married the empire."

The next few seconds unfolded almost in slow motion.

Isabella shoved Khloe backward.

Exactly as the camera had captured.

The marble table struck Khloe's spine.

The crystal glass fell.

Shattered.

Khloe reached for balance.

Then Isabella stepped forward.

The designer stiletto drove into Khloe's side with unmistakable force.

The impact sent her crashing onto the floor.

The surveillance room fell silent again.

There was no ambiguity.

No accidental contact.

No misunderstanding.

Every movement was deliberate.

Every strike intentional.

Marcus closed his eyes.

For years...

He had trusted Isabella.

She had attended charity dinners.

Company galas.

Family holidays.

She had smiled beside his wife in countless photographs.

And all that time...

She had been waiting.

Waiting for this moment.

The recording continued.

Khloe struggled to breathe.

She curled around her stomach.

Tears streamed across her face.

Then...

The suite door burst open.

Marcus appeared.

Exactly as everyone remembered.

Isabella reacted instantly.

She forced tears into her eyes.

Collapsed against the wall.

And pointed directly at Khloe.

"She attacked me!"

Even knowing it was coming...

Watching the transformation made everyone's skin crawl.

The performance lasted less than three seconds.

Yet it was disturbingly convincing.

Elaine whispered,

"I almost believed her."

Richard nodded once.

"That's why cameras exist."

The footage reached its end.

The monitor froze.

No one spoke for nearly an entire minute.

Finally the chief legal officer broke the silence.

"This recording establishes attempted aggravated assault."

"Potential attempted homicide."

"Intent against an unborn child."

"And multiple verbal admissions."

Richard looked toward Marcus.

"I believe the decision is yours."

Marcus kept staring at the frozen image of Isabella standing over Khloe.

His voice was barely audible.

"Call the police."

Richard reached for the phone.

Before he could dial...

Another security officer rushed into the room without knocking.

"Director Bennett."

Richard turned.

"What is it?"

The officer looked unusually pale.

"We found something during the backup."

"What?"

"The camera inside Suite Twelve wasn't the only one recording."

Richard frowned.

"What else?"

The officer placed a second encrypted drive onto the table.

"This contains hallway audio from thirty minutes before the attack."

Marcus looked confused.

"There shouldn't be hallway audio."

"There isn't."

The officer swallowed.

"It came from someone's phone."

Everyone stared at him.

"It appears one guest accidentally left a voice recorder running inside their handbag during the gala."

Richard asked quietly,

"Did it capture anything important?"

The officer hesitated.

Then answered with a sentence that made Marcus's blood run cold.

"It captured Isabella meeting with someone before she entered Khloe's suite."

Marcus leaned forward.

"Who?"

The officer looked directly into his eyes.

"We haven't identified the voice yet."

"But whoever that man is..."

May you like

"He already knew the baby was supposed to die tonight."
