Chapter 15: The Truth No One Wanted

Dawn broke over the city beneath a sky still heavy with rain.
Marcus hadn't slept.
He sat inside the police forensic lab, staring at the monitor where the damaged VHS tape had ended.
Twelve minutes.
Just twelve missing minutes.
Yet those missing minutes had shaped twenty-three years of hatred, betrayal, and bloodshed.
Richard Bennett stood beside him.
The forensic technician entered carrying a portable hard drive.
"I've got good news."
Marcus looked up immediately.
"You recovered it?"
The technician nodded.
"Not from the tape."
Marcus frowned.
"Then from where?"
"The VHS recorder."
Silence filled the room.
"The old recorder automatically cached a low-resolution backup on its internal memory."
Richard's eyes widened.
"I forgot those systems even existed."
The technician smiled.
"Most people did."
He connected the drive.
A restored video appeared.
The missing twelve minutes began to play.
April 17, 2003
The conference room returned.
Victor Hale stood at one end of the table.
Jonathan Thorne remained seated, staring at the fraudulent financial records.
Evelyn Hale spoke first.
"There is only one legal option."
"We report everything."
Anthony Rossi nodded.
"I'll testify."
Richard agreed.
"So will I."
All eyes turned toward Jonathan.
Victor smiled.
"You have one vote left."
Jonathan slowly stood.
Marcus leaned closer to the screen.
This was it.
The decision that had haunted his father for decades.
Jonathan finally spoke.
"I vote..."
He looked directly at Victor.
"...to report every crime."
Marcus froze.
Richard closed his eyes.
For twenty-three years...
Jonathan had believed he hesitated.
He hadn't.
He had voted against Victor.
Victor's expression darkened.
"You've made a mistake."
Jonathan answered calmly.
"No."
"I've corrected one."
Victor walked toward the door.
Before leaving, he stopped.
"You think the law will save you."
He smiled.
"The law only protects people who arrive first."
The door closed.
The recording continued.
Anthony sighed with relief.
"It's over."
Evelyn quietly shook her head.
"No."
"It's just beginning."
Twenty Minutes Later
The meeting ended.
Jonathan remained behind with Anthony.
The hidden microphone continued recording.
Jonathan spoke softly.
"I'm sorry."
Anthony looked confused.
"For what?"
Jonathan lowered his head.
"I brought Victor into our lives."
Anthony placed a hand on his shoulder.
"We'll fix this."
Jonathan shook his head.
"No."
"He won't come after me."
Anthony frowned.
"Then who?"
Jonathan answered without hesitation.
"Our families."
Marcus paused the video.
His eyes filled with emotion.
"My father knew."
Richard nodded.
"He understood Victor before any of us did."
Marcus whispered,
"And he spent twenty-three years trying to protect everyone."
Police Headquarters
Detective Laura Hayes entered carrying another file.
"We've identified the building where Victor transmitted yesterday's calls."
Marcus stood immediately.
"Where?"
She placed a satellite image on the table.
An isolated estate overlooking the coast.
Richard recognized it instantly.
"The Hale Estate."
Marcus frowned.
"I thought it burned down."
"It did."
Richard looked closer.
"The house burned."
"The underground bunker didn't."
The Hale Estate
By sunset, tactical teams surrounded the abandoned mansion.
Armored vehicles blocked every road.
Drones circled overhead.
Snipers covered every exit.
Marcus stood beside Richard wearing a ballistic vest.
"This ends tonight."
Richard nodded.
"It has to."
The tactical commander approached.
"We're ready."
Marcus took a deep breath.
"Go."
Steel gates exploded inward.
The operation began.
Underground Bunker
Victor Hale watched dozens of security monitors.
Every police movement appeared on his screens.
He smiled.
"Right on schedule."
One of his guards looked nervous.
"They've surrounded us."
Victor calmly removed a single videotape from the shelf.
Its label read:
THE END
The guard frowned.
"Should we evacuate?"
Victor shook his head.
"No."
He walked toward the center of the bunker.
"I've been preparing for this day longer than Marcus has been alive."
The Raid
Police breached the first level.
Empty.
Second level.
Empty.
Third level.
Still empty.
Marcus looked around.
"He knew we were coming."
Richard noticed something unusual.
Dust.
Everywhere.
Except one hallway.
Fresh footprints.
He pointed.
"This way."
The team advanced carefully.
At the end of the corridor stood an enormous steel door.
Locked from the inside.
The commander signaled.
"Breaching charge."
The explosion echoed underground.
The door crashed open.
Inside...
There was no command center.
No guards.
No Victor.
Only a single chair.
And an old television.
The screen flickered to life.
Victor appeared in a prerecorded video.
He smiled directly into the camera.
"If you're watching this..."
"...then you've finally caught up."
Marcus stepped closer.
"Where are you?"
The video continued.
"You've spent days chasing me."
"You should have been looking elsewhere."
Marcus felt a knot tighten in his stomach.
Victor picked up one final photograph.
It showed Khloe holding their newborn ultrasound image.
"I told you from the beginning."
"The empire would fall because of its heir."
Marcus whispered,
"What have you done?"
Victor looked straight into the camera.
"I didn't lose."
"I delayed you."
The video ended.
The television switched to a live news broadcast.
A reporter stood outside Bennett Medical Center.
Breaking news flashed across the screen.
"KHLOE THORNE HAS GONE INTO PREMATURE LABOR AFTER A MEDICAL EMERGENCY."
Marcus's heart stopped.
He grabbed his radio.
"Get me a vehicle!"
Richard stared at the screen.
Then he noticed something everyone else had missed.
The timestamp on the news broadcast.
It was recorded...
Thirty minutes earlier.
Not live.
Richard's eyes narrowed.
He looked around the empty bunker.
Then at the television.
Then at the untouched layer of dust beneath the chair.
He suddenly understood.
"Marcus!"
Marcus turned.
"This is another distraction!"
"Khloe isn't the target!"
Marcus frowned.
"Then who is?"
Richard's face went pale as he looked at Jonathan's name on the operation roster.
"Your father."
At that exact moment, Jonathan's emergency tracker went offline.
A single alarm echoed through police headquarters.
May you like
SIGNAL LOST.
