Chapter 5: The Basement Secret

Marcus stared at the visitor log as though the words themselves were lying.

VISITOR: Jonathan Thorne
TIME OF ENTRY: 7:36 PM
AUTHORIZED ACCESS: Basement Level B2

His father.

Not the executive lounge.

Not the gala ballroom.

Not Khloe's recovery suite.

The basement.

Marcus looked up at Richard Bennett.

"There has to be some mistake."

Richard remained silent.

The chief of security shook his head.

"We've verified it three times."

"The facial recognition system matched him with a 99.98% confidence score."

Marcus felt the room tilt beneath him.

"My father told everyone he left because he had a migraine."

"He did leave the ballroom," Richard replied.

"But he didn't leave the hospital."

Forty Minutes Earlier

Jonathan Thorne walked through the underground service corridor without an escort.

Even at sixty-five, he carried himself with the quiet authority of a man accustomed to every door opening before he reached it.

The guards recognized him immediately.

No questions.

No delays.

One of them nodded respectfully.

"Good evening, Mr. Thorne."

Jonathan returned the greeting with a polite smile.

"Thank you."

He continued toward Basement B2.

At the far end of the corridor stood an unmarked gray door.

No sign.

No room number.

Only an electronic keypad.

Jonathan entered a six-digit code.

The lock clicked.

Inside, a single man waited.

He remained in the shadows.

Only his voice could be heard.

"You're late."

Jonathan removed his tuxedo jacket.

"The gala ran longer than expected."

"Is everything ready?"

The man nodded.

"Isabella understands her role."

Jonathan looked directly at him.

"Remember our agreement."

"No innocent lives."

The shadowed figure smiled faintly.

"Of course."

Jonathan turned and left.

He never looked back.

Had he stayed another thirty seconds...

He would have heard the man pick up a phone.

"There has been a change."

"The wife is pregnant."

A pause.

Then the chilling reply:

"Then eliminate them both."

Present Time

Richard watched Marcus carefully.

"I don't think your father ordered the attack."

Marcus looked up.

"What?"

"He came to stop something."

Marcus frowned.

"How can you possibly know that?"

Richard opened the recovered audio file.

"Listen."

He isolated one section that had previously been buried beneath background noise.

The software cleaned the recording.

Jonathan's voice became clearer.

"No innocent lives."

Marcus's eyes widened.

"I never heard that."

"It was almost inaudible."

Richard folded his arms.

"Your father believed this was intimidation."

"Not murder."

Marcus sat heavily in a chair.

"So..."

"Someone lied to him."

Richard nodded once.

"I believe so."

Hospital Recovery Wing

Khloe drifted in and out of sleep.

The medication dulled the pain, but her dreams remained restless.

Fragments of memories floated through her mind.

A black limousine.

Rain against tinted windows.

Jonathan Thorne sitting beside her years earlier.

She had been only twenty-three.

Newly engaged to Marcus.

Jonathan had handed her a sealed envelope.

"If anything ever happens to me," he had said quietly, "don't let Marcus open this unless he has no other choice."

She had laughed nervously.

"You're talking as if someone wants to kill you."

Jonathan hadn't smiled.

"They do."

The memory vanished as quickly as it came.

Khloe's eyes snapped open.

Her breathing quickened.

"The envelope..."

Marcus

Marcus had barely slept when his phone vibrated.

The screen displayed a single message from an unknown number.

CHECK YOUR FATHER'S OFFICE.

Nothing else.

No sender.

No explanation.

Richard read the message over Marcus's shoulder.

"It could be a trap."

Marcus nodded.

"I know."

"But if there's even a chance..."

Richard sighed.

"We're going together."

Thorne Global Headquarters

Just after midnight, two black SUVs pulled into the underground garage.

The forty-eight-story headquarters tower overlooked the city's financial district.

Normally, the building buzzed with activity around the clock.

Tonight, it was eerily quiet.

The night receptionist looked surprised.

"Mr. Thorne?"

Marcus didn't stop.

"My father's office."

The receptionist hesitated.

"Sir..."

"He instructed us not to let anyone enter."

Marcus froze.

"When?"

Richard and Marcus exchanged a glance.

Jonathan had returned here after leaving the hospital.

Richard spoke calmly.

"Open the office."

The receptionist swallowed.

"I... I need authorization."

Marcus placed his thumb on the executive biometric scanner.

ACCESS GRANTED

The elevator climbed to the top floor.

Neither man spoke.

Jonathan's Office

The massive wooden doors stood slightly open.

Marcus pushed them gently.

The office was empty.

The antique grandfather clock stood in the corner, its deep bell echoing through the room.

Dong...

Dong...

Dong...

The same sound from the recording.

Richard slowly walked inside.

Nothing appeared disturbed.

The fireplace was cold.

The desk perfectly organized.

Family photographs lined the shelves.

Marcus as a child.

Marcus graduating from university.

Marcus and Khloe on their wedding day.

Richard's eyes paused on one photograph.

Jonathan had his arm around Isabella's father.

The two men were smiling.

Friends.

Marcus noticed it too.

"I've never seen that picture before."

Richard carefully lifted the frame.

Something felt strange.

It was heavier than it should have been.

He turned it over.

A tiny magnetic latch clicked open.

Hidden inside the frame...

Was a silver key.

Marcus stared.

"A hidden compartment?"

Richard nodded.

"This wasn't for decoration."

The key carried no label.

Only one engraved letter.

V

Marcus frowned.

"What does V mean?"

Before Richard could answer...

The grandfather clock chimed again.

But this time...

Something else happened.

A soft mechanical click echoed behind them.

Marcus turned.

One section of the mahogany bookshelf had shifted outward by a few centimeters.

Richard whispered,

"I don't believe this..."

Together, they pushed the shelf.

It swung open silently.

Behind it lay a narrow staircase descending into darkness.

Cold air drifted upward.

Marcus reached for the light switch.

Nothing happened.

Richard took a flashlight from his jacket.

The beam revealed concrete steps disappearing below the building.

On the first step...

Someone had left a fresh envelope.

Marcus picked it up.

Across the front, in Jonathan Thorne's unmistakable handwriting, were six words:

Marcus. Open Only If I'm Gone.

Marcus's hands trembled.

He looked toward Richard.

Richard gave a slow nod.

"I think your father knew this day would come."

Marcus broke the seal.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

The first sentence stole the breath from his lungs.

My son, if you are reading this, then the people I spent twenty years hiding from have finally found our family.
