Chapter 3: The Voice Behind the Plan

No one in the surveillance room spoke.

The encrypted flash drive sat in the center of the conference table like it weighed a hundred pounds.

Marcus stared at it.

Richard Bennett finally broke the silence.

"Play it."

The technician plugged the drive into an isolated forensic workstation. A warning appeared across the monitor.

SOURCE: PRIVATE MOBILE DEVICE
STATUS: RECOVERED FROM AUTOMATIC CLOUD BACKUP
FILE LENGTH: 18 MINUTES, 42 SECONDS

"The recording started accidentally," the technician explained. "A guest apparently pressed the voice memo button before placing the phone inside her handbag."

Richard nodded.

"Continue."

The audio began with nothing unusual.

Soft music from the charity gala.

Champagne glasses clinking.

People laughing.

Servers announcing tables.

The sound quality rose and fell as the owner of the handbag moved around the ballroom.

Then...

A familiar pair of heels echoed across the marble floor.

Click.

Click.

Click.

Elaine immediately recognized the sound.

"That's Isabella."

The technician enhanced the audio.

A woman's voice became perfectly clear.

"I've waited long enough."

Marcus lowered his eyes.

It was Isabella.

But she wasn't speaking to Khloe.

She was speaking to someone else.

A man's voice answered.

Calm.

Older.

Confident.

"You only have one opportunity."

The room became completely silent.

Isabella laughed softly.

"You still don't trust me?"

"I trust results."

"You'll have them."

"And Marcus?"

A brief pause.

"He'll believe whatever he wants to believe."

The man chuckled.

"No."

"He'll believe the evidence."

Richard slowly leaned forward.

Something about the voice bothered him.

He had heard it before.

Somewhere.

Years ago.

But where?

The recording continued.

Isabella lowered her voice.

"The pregnancy has complicated everything."

"It shouldn't have happened."

The man answered immediately.

"Children complicate inheritances."

Marcus felt his stomach tighten.

Inheritance?

What inheritance?

Isabella sighed.

"After tonight..."

"There won't be a baby anymore."

"And Marcus?"

"He'll grieve."

"I'll help him recover."

Elaine looked physically sick.

Richard's expression hardened.

Every sentence was another brick in the wall closing around Isabella.

Then came the line that changed everything.

The man said quietly,

"Just remember."

"No witnesses."

"No cameras."

"No mistakes."

Marcus's head snapped upward.

Richard immediately pointed toward the technician.

"Rewind."

The sentence played again.

"No witnesses."

"No cameras."

"No mistakes."

Elaine whispered,

"He thought there weren't cameras."

Richard nodded slowly.

"Which means..."

"He never entered the suite."

Marcus frowned.

"How do you know?"

Richard looked toward the floor plan displayed on the wall.

"Because anyone who had ever been inside that suite would have seen the camera above the entrance."

Silence.

Someone had planned the attack...

Without ever visiting the room.

The technician isolated the male voice.

Artificial intelligence analyzed the recording.

A waveform appeared.

VOICE MATCHING...

Everyone watched the loading bar.

Twenty percent.

Forty-three.

Sixty-eight.

Ninety-two.

Then...

NO MATCH FOUND IN HOSPITAL DATABASE

Marcus exhaled.

"So we know nothing."

The technician shook his head.

"Not exactly."

He zoomed into the audio.

"There are background sounds."

"What kind?"

"A mechanical clock."

He filtered the frequencies.

Tick...

Tick...

Tick...

Another sound appeared.

A deep metallic bell.

Dong...

Dong...

Dong...

Richard's eyes narrowed.

"I know that bell."

The technician looked up.

"You do?"

Richard nodded.

"I've heard it every Wednesday for twenty years."

Everyone turned toward him.

"Where?"

"The Thorne Foundation headquarters."

Marcus frowned.

"Our headquarters doesn't have a bell."

Richard looked directly at him.

"No."

"Your headquarters doesn't."

"But your father's private office does."

The room froze.

Marcus slowly stood.

"My father's office?"

Richard nodded.

"The antique English grandfather clock."

"It rings every fifteen minutes."

Marcus remembered.

The enormous clock.

Nearly three meters tall.

Imported decades ago.

His father had refused to replace it despite countless renovations.

Its bell...

Was unmistakable.

Marcus whispered,

"You're saying the conversation happened..."

"...inside my father's office?"

Richard didn't answer immediately.

Instead he looked at the technician.

"Can you confirm the timestamp?"

The technician checked.

"The audio was recorded at 8:19 PM."

Marcus frowned.

"My father left the gala before eight."

Elaine nodded.

"He said he wasn't feeling well."

Richard's voice became quieter.

"Or perhaps..."

"He had another appointment."

At that exact moment...

A nurse hurried into the surveillance room.

"Mr. Thorne."

Marcus turned immediately.

"How's Khloe?"

The nurse smiled for the first time that evening.

"She's stable."

Marcus closed his eyes in relief.

"And the baby?"

"The heartbeat has normalized."

A weight lifted from every shoulder in the room.

For the first time since the attack...

Someone smiled.

Richard placed a reassuring hand on Marcus's shoulder.

"They're fighters."

Marcus nodded gratefully.

"I want to see her."

"You can."

"But only for a few minutes."

Marcus hurried toward the door.

Just before leaving...

Richard spoke.

"Marcus."

He stopped.

"There is something you should know before you walk into that room."

Marcus turned.

"What?"

Richard hesitated.

Then chose his words carefully.

"The investigation may uncover things about your family..."

"...that Khloe has protected you from for years."

Marcus stared at him.

"What does that mean?"

Richard simply replied,

"Ask your wife."

Twenty minutes later...

Marcus quietly entered the intensive maternity recovery suite.

The room was dimly lit.

Machines hummed softly.

Khloe rested against white pillows, looking pale but conscious.

When she saw him...

A faint smile crossed her face.

"Our baby?"

Marcus took her hand.

"Safe."

Tears filled Khloe's eyes.

She whispered,

"Thank God..."

Marcus kissed her forehead.

"You scared me."

She managed a weak laugh.

"I scared myself."

For several moments...

Neither of them spoke.

They simply held hands.

Listening to the tiny heartbeat echoing from the fetal monitor.

Then Marcus remembered Richard's words.

He looked into Khloe's eyes.

"I need to ask you something."

She nodded.

"What is it?"

"Did you know Isabella before we met?"

Khloe's smile faded.

"Yes."

Marcus felt his pulse quicken.

Richard had been right.

"You never told me."

"I couldn't."

"Why?"

Khloe slowly closed her eyes.

Because the answer carried years of pain.

When she finally spoke...

Her voice barely rose above a whisper.

"Because Isabella wasn't trying to steal you..."

Marcus frowned.

"What?"

Khloe looked directly into his eyes.

"She was trying to finish something that started long before I became your wife."

Marcus's heart pounded.

"What are you talking about?"

A single tear slid down Khloe's cheek.

"Marcus..."

"Your father destroyed her family."

Silence swallowed the room.

Marcus stared at her, unable to speak.

Khloe took a slow, painful breath.

"And he wasn't the only one."

Marcus felt the world tilt beneath him.

"What else are you hiding from me?"

Khloe squeezed his hand.

"I've been trying to protect you..."

"...from the truth about the Thorne family."

Outside the room...

Unnoticed by everyone...

A janitor slowly pushed his cleaning cart past the door.

He wore a hospital uniform.

A surgical mask.

A baseball cap pulled low over his eyes.

No one questioned him.

No one recognized him.

As he reached the end of the hallway, he quietly removed a tiny wireless earpiece.

Then he whispered three chilling words.

"Plan B failed."

A distorted male voice answered immediately through the earpiece.

"I expected that."

The janitor nodded once.

"What now?"

The voice replied without hesitation.

"Then we remove..."

May you like

"...everyone who knows."
