Chapter 13: The Invitation

Marcus stared at the brass key resting inside the envelope.

It was old.

Its edges were worn smooth from years of use.

The attached note contained only one sentence.

If you want to know who Genesis is... come alone.

No address.

No signature.

Nothing else.

Richard Bennett carefully examined the envelope without touching the key.

"No fingerprints."

Marcus frowned.

"They wiped it?"

Richard nodded.

"Professionals always do."

Khloe watched silently from her hospital bed.

Something about the key unsettled her.

"I've seen that symbol before."

Marcus turned.

"What symbol?"

She pointed to the head of the key.

Engraved into the brass was a small phoenix surrounded by a circle.

Richard's expression changed instantly.

"That's impossible."

Marcus looked at him.

"You recognize it?"

Richard slowly nodded.

"It belonged to the original company."

Twenty-Three Years Earlier

Before Thorne Global had a name...

Before investors...

Before skyscrapers...

The five founders rented a tiny office above an old bookstore.

Anthony Rossi designed the company's first emblem.

A phoenix.

Not because they wanted to symbolize rebirth.

But because Anthony believed businesses should survive failure instead of pretending it never happened.

Jonathan had framed the drawing and hung it on the wall.

When the partnership collapsed...

The emblem disappeared.

Richard had never seen it again.

Until now.

Present Day

Marcus looked back at the key.

"So this opens something from the old company."

Richard nodded.

"I think I know what."

"What?"

"The original office."

Marcus blinked.

"It still exists?"

Richard gave a slow smile.

"It was never sold."

The Old Building

Late that afternoon, Marcus and Richard arrived at a narrow brick building hidden between modern office towers.

Time had almost forgotten it.

The bookstore downstairs had closed years earlier.

Dust covered the front windows.

A faded sign still hung above the entrance.

HALE • THORNE • ROSSI • BENNETT FINANCIAL CONSULTANTS

Marcus stared at the names.

All four founders.

Together.

For the first time.

Richard inserted the brass key into the front door.

It turned effortlessly.

Someone had maintained the lock.

The door opened.

A faint scent of old paper filled the air.

Nothing inside appeared abandoned.

Furniture remained neatly arranged.

Books lined every shelf.

A coffee mug still rested on a desk as though its owner had stepped out only moments ago.

Marcus whispered,

"It's like time stopped."

Upstairs

Richard climbed the narrow staircase.

The old conference room waited exactly as he remembered.

Five chairs.

One long wooden table.

A dusty whiteboard.

Then Marcus noticed something unusual.

Four framed photographs hung on the wall.

Jonathan.

Richard.

Anthony.

Victor.

The fifth frame...

Was empty.

Marcus frowned.

"There were five founders."

Richard nodded.

"There were."

"So whose picture is missing?"

Richard looked toward the empty frame.

His voice became quiet.

"Claire's mother."

Marcus froze.

"What?"

Richard sighed.

"Her name was Evelyn."

Evelyn Hale

Richard sat slowly in one of the old chairs.

"Evelyn wasn't a founder."

"She was our attorney."

"The smartest person in the room."

Marcus listened carefully.

Richard continued.

"She warned us about Victor."

"Repeatedly."

Jonathan wanted to believe his friend could change.

Anthony wanted peace.

I wanted evidence.

"Evelyn wanted distance."

Marcus asked quietly,

"What happened to her?"

Richard looked at the empty frame.

"She disappeared."

Victor told everyone she had left the country.

No one ever proved otherwise.

Meanwhile

Jonathan remained inside the police safe house.

He couldn't stop thinking about Marcus.

Something felt wrong.

The invitation.

The key.

Victor never gave gifts.

He created traps.

Jonathan called Richard.

No answer.

He called Marcus.

Straight to voicemail.

His uneasiness grew.

He immediately contacted Detective Laura Hayes.

"I need you to track my son."

The detective replied,

"We lost his vehicle twenty minutes ago."

Jonathan stood abruptly.

"What do you mean, lost?"

"The GPS transmitter stopped transmitting."

Jonathan closed his eyes.

Victor had anticipated everything.

The Hidden Room

Back inside the old office...

Marcus noticed scratches on the wooden floor beneath the conference table.

The table had been moved many times.

Richard knelt.

He ran his hand beneath the edge.

His fingers found a small metal latch.

Click.

The floor opened.

A narrow compartment appeared beneath the boards.

Inside rested a single steel lockbox.

The brass key fit perfectly.

Marcus slowly lifted the lid.

Inside were three items.

A cassette tape.

An old VHS videotape.

A sealed legal document.

Richard picked up the document first.

His face turned pale.

Marcus frowned.

"What is it?"

Richard didn't answer.

Instead, he handed it over.

The title read:

LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF EVELYN HALE

Marcus scanned the first page.

Then stopped.

He reread one sentence twice.

His heartbeat quickened.

"No..."

Richard quietly nodded.

Marcus looked up.

"This says..."

"...Claire inherited everything."

Richard answered softly.

"It does."

Marcus frowned.

"But Victor controls everything."

"Exactly."

Hospital

Khloe sat alone after the doctors finished another examination.

The baby remained stable.

For the first time in two days, she allowed herself to breathe.

Then her phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

She almost ignored it.

Instead...

She answered.

No one spoke.

Only breathing.

Finally...

A woman's voice whispered.

"Khloe..."

Khloe's eyes widened.

"I know that voice."

The woman answered quietly.

"You should."

"It's Evelyn."

Khloe stopped breathing.

Richard had just told Marcus Evelyn Hale disappeared twenty-three years ago.

Yet someone claiming to be Evelyn was calling from the other end of the line.

Before Khloe could respond...

The line disconnected.

The Old Office

Marcus inserted the cassette into an old recorder found inside the lockbox.

Static filled the room.

Then...

A woman's voice.

Calm.

Clear.

Recorded decades earlier.

"If you are listening to this, Victor has already failed to keep the truth buried."

Marcus exchanged a glance with Richard.

The recording continued.

"There were never four founders."

"There were five."

Marcus frowned.

Richard looked equally confused.

The woman spoke one final sentence before the tape abruptly ended.

"And the fifth founder..."

Static crackled loudly.

The tape stopped.

Marcus pressed play again.

Nothing.

The magnetic tape had snapped.

Only the first half of the message survived.

Marcus stared at the silent recorder.

Somewhere in the missing half...

Was the identity of the mysterious fifth founder.

And perhaps...
