Chapter 12: The Heir's Burden

The interrogation room emptied in silence.
Marcus stood alone in the hallway, Isabella's final words echoing in his mind.
"The empire won't fall because I destroy it."
"It will fall because the heir opens the door himself."
Richard Bennett closed the file in his hands.
"Victor never wanted Jonathan."
Marcus looked at him.
"He wanted me."
Richard nodded.
"From the beginning."
Police Headquarters
Detectives reviewed hundreds of files recovered from the warehouse.
Every document pointed toward one unsettling conclusion.
Victor Hale rarely acted without planning years in advance.
A forensic analyst hurried into the conference room carrying a laptop.
"Director Bennett."
Richard turned.
"What did you find?"
"We decrypted one of Victor's hard drives."
"And?"
The analyst projected a timeline onto the wall.
It stretched back twenty-three years.
Photographs.
Financial transactions.
News articles.
Travel records.
Every major event in the Thorne family's life had been cataloged.
Marcus's graduation.
His engagement to Khloe.
Their wedding.
The announcement of Khloe's pregnancy.
Nothing had escaped Victor's attention.
Then the analyst enlarged one folder.
Its title read:
PROJECT HEIR
Marcus felt his chest tighten.
"Open it."
Inside were dozens of documents.
Psychological profiles.
Business reports.
Even copies of Marcus's university essays.
Richard frowned.
"He studied you."
"No," the analyst corrected.
"He trained for you."
Bennett Medical Center
Khloe remained under observation.
The doctors were optimistic.
The placental injury was stabilizing.
The baby continued to respond normally.
Dr. Amelia Grant smiled.
"I think you've both survived the worst."
Khloe looked down at her stomach.
The baby kicked gently.
A small reminder that life was still fighting.
Marcus entered moments later.
The exhaustion on his face was impossible to hide.
Khloe reached for his hand.
"You found something."
Marcus nodded.
"Victor has been watching us for years."
Khloe sighed softly.
"I figured."
Marcus looked surprised.
"You knew?"
"I suspected."
Marcus frowned.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Khloe hesitated.
Then quietly answered,
"Because I thought I was the target."
Marcus squeezed her hand.
"You never were."
"No."
Khloe looked toward the window.
"Our baby was."
A Safe House Outside the City
Jonathan Thorne refused to sleep.
The police had moved him into protective custody after the warehouse attack.
Two tactical officers guarded every entrance.
Richard had personally approved the location.
Jonathan sat alone in a small study, rereading Anthony Rossi's confession.
A knock came at the door.
"Come in."
David Mercer entered carrying coffee.
"You should rest."
Jonathan smiled faintly.
"I've rested for twenty-three years."
David placed the cups on the table.
"I owe you an apology."
Jonathan looked up.
"For what?"
"I should have told Marcus everything years ago."
Jonathan shook his head.
"No."
"I made that decision."
David sat across from him.
"We all made mistakes."
Jonathan looked at the old photograph of the original partnership.
Five smiling faces.
Five friends.
Only two remained free.
Victor's Hideout
Victor stood before another wall of monitors.
Unlike the abandoned mansion, this location was modern.
Underground.
Invisible.
One of his men approached.
"Sir."
Victor didn't turn.
"Report."
"We lost Claire."
"I expected that."
"Isabella is cooperating with police."
Victor remained calm.
"And Marcus?"
The guard smiled.
"He hasn't left the hospital."
Victor nodded.
"Good."
The guard looked confused.
"You wanted him protected?"
Victor finally turned.
"I want him predictable."
Richard's Discovery
Back at police headquarters, Richard continued searching through Project Heir.
One document caught his attention.
It wasn't about Marcus.
It was about Khloe.
The file contained a DNA report.
Richard frowned.
"This can't be right."
The forensic analyst walked over.
"What is it?"
Richard compared the document with hospital records.
The report had been created eighteen months earlier.
Long before Khloe became pregnant.
Long before the attack.
He immediately called Marcus.
"Where are you?"
"At the hospital."
"Stay there."
Richard's tone had changed.
"I'm coming."
Hospital Recovery Suite
Marcus hung up as Richard entered ten minutes later.
Without greeting anyone, Richard locked the door.
Khloe noticed immediately.
"What's wrong?"
Richard placed the DNA report on the bed.
Marcus picked it up.
The heading read:
CONFIDENTIAL PATERNITY ANALYSIS
Marcus looked confused.
"We never requested this."
Richard nodded.
"I know."
Khloe slowly took the report.
Her expression changed instantly.
"No..."
Marcus looked between them.
"What is it?"
Khloe's hands began shaking.
"I've seen this document before."
Marcus frowned.
"What?"
"It disappeared from my office last year."
Richard looked directly at her.
"You never told us."
"I thought someone had made a mistake."
Marcus unfolded the final page.
His eyes widened.
SUBJECT: UNBORN FETUS
He looked at Richard.
"This report was created before the pregnancy."
"It shouldn't exist."
Richard nodded.
"Exactly."
The room fell silent.
Marcus slowly turned the page.
Another name appeared beneath the laboratory reference.
PROJECT GENESIS
Khloe whispered,
"Oh my God..."
Marcus looked at her.
"You know what Genesis is?"
She closed her eyes.
"It's not a project."
Marcus's heartbeat quickened.
"What is it?"
Khloe looked directly at both men.
"It's a person."
Elsewhere
Victor sat alone in a dimly lit room.
He opened an old wooden box.
Inside was a photograph of a little girl holding his hand.
Claire.
He looked at it for several seconds.
Then quietly placed it back inside.
One of his guards entered.
"The preparations are complete."
Victor nodded.
"And the invitation?"
"It's been delivered."
Victor smiled.
"Excellent."
He looked toward the security monitor displaying Marcus holding the mysterious DNA report.
"The next move belongs to him."
The guard asked,
"What if he refuses?"
Victor's smile widened.
"He won't."
"Every child eventually goes looking for the truth."
He reached for a sealed envelope addressed in elegant handwriting.
To Marcus Thorne
Inside was a single key.
And a handwritten note.
