Chapter 6: The Letter Beneath the Clock

Marcus stood motionless.

The hidden doorway behind the bookshelf remained open, revealing a staircase swallowed by darkness. Yet he couldn't take another step.

His attention was fixed on the letter in his trembling hands.

Jonathan Thorne's handwriting was unmistakable.

Elegant.

Deliberate.

Every stroke looked as though it had been written by a man who understood that each word might be his last.

Richard Bennett quietly closed the office doors.

"No interruptions."

Marcus nodded without looking up.

Then he unfolded the first page.

My son,

If you're reading this, I have either disappeared... or I have failed.

Neither outcome surprises me anymore.

There is something I should have told you years ago.

Instead, I convinced myself that silence could protect our family.

I was wrong.

Marcus swallowed hard.

The room felt smaller with every sentence.

Twenty-three years ago, before Thorne Global became one of the largest investment groups in the country, I had three partners.

Richard Bennett.

Marcus glanced toward Richard.

Richard lowered his eyes but said nothing.

The letter continued.

Anthony Rossi.

Marcus froze.

"Rossi..."

Richard slowly nodded.

"Isabella's father."

Marcus looked back at the page.

The third name appeared.

Victor Hale.

Richard inhaled sharply.

Marcus immediately noticed.

"You know him."

Richard answered quietly.

"I hoped I was wrong."

The letter continued.

The four of us built everything together.

We weren't just business partners.

We were brothers.

Then greed entered the room.

Marcus frowned.

His father had always claimed he built the company alone.

The story had been repeated in magazines...

Interviews...

Documentaries...

Apparently...

It had all been a lie.

The next paragraph made Marcus's heartbeat quicken.

Victor believed money should buy power.

Anthony believed power should protect families.

Richard believed rules mattered more than profits.

And I believed I could keep everyone together.

I failed every one of them.

Richard quietly sat down.

His expression revealed years of buried regret.

Marcus continued reading.

Victor secretly began laundering money through our overseas investment accounts.

When Richard discovered it, he wanted to report everything immediately.

Anthony agreed.

I hesitated.

Marcus looked up.

"My father covered it up?"

Richard answered honestly.

"For two weeks."

"Why?"

"He thought Victor would surrender."

Marcus shook his head.

"He didn't."

"No."

"He doubled down."

The letter continued.

Victor framed Anthony.

Marcus's eyes widened.

Evidence disappeared.

Accounts were altered.

Witnesses were bribed.

Anthony Rossi lost everything in less than a month.

Marcus whispered,

"Isabella..."

Richard nodded sadly.

"She grew up believing your father destroyed her family."

Marcus lowered the letter.

"But that's not entirely true."

"No."

"It isn't."

Richard walked toward the office window overlooking the city.

"I wanted Anthony to fight."

"He refused."

"Why?"

"He had a daughter."

"Isabella."

"He told me..."

Richard paused.

"...that prison was better than seeing his child become a target."

Marcus closed his eyes.

Everything suddenly became more complicated.

Isabella wasn't born evil.

She had grown up believing one family had stolen everything from hers.

But none of that excused what she had done to Khloe.

Marcus resumed reading.

The handwriting had become noticeably shakier.

Anthony never betrayed us.

I learned the truth too late.

By the time I exposed Victor's manipulation...

Anthony had already disappeared.

Richard quietly corrected him.

"He didn't disappear."

Marcus looked up.

"He took Isabella and fled Europe."

"He spent years trying to protect her."

Marcus frowned.

"Then how did she end up here?"

Richard's expression darkened.

"Someone found them."

Before Marcus could ask another question...

The office phone rang.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Neither man moved.

The phone never rang after midnight.

Finally...

Richard answered.

"This is Bennett."

Silence.

Then his face changed.

"What?"

Marcus immediately stood.

"What happened?"

Richard slowly lowered the receiver.

"That was the hospital."

Marcus's heart sank.

"Khloe?"

"She's alive."

Marcus exhaled.

"But..."

Richard continued.

"Isabella is gone."

Bennett Medical Center

Only twenty minutes earlier...

Two officers had been stationed outside Isabella's secured recovery room.

She wasn't seriously injured during the confrontation, but after the attack she had been placed under observation while police prepared formal charges.

The room was monitored continuously.

No visitors.

No exceptions.

At 12:17 a.m., a nurse entered to administer medication.

The bed was empty.

The restraints remained locked.

The IV line had been neatly disconnected.

The window...

Was still sealed shut.

The security cameras showed no one entering.

No one leaving.

It was as though Isabella had simply vanished.

Marcus stared in disbelief.

"That's impossible."

Richard agreed.

"It should be."

The phone rang again.

Richard answered immediately.

Another thirty seconds passed.

Then he slowly looked at Marcus.

"This just became much worse."

Marcus felt a knot tighten in his stomach.

"What now?"

"The two officers guarding Isabella..."

Richard's voice became heavy.

"...were found unconscious."

"Drugged?"

Richard shook his head.

"No."

"They're dead."

Silence filled the office.

Marcus struggled to process the words.

"Whoever took Isabella..."

"...didn't want witnesses."

At that exact moment...

Far outside the city...

A black SUV sped along an empty mountain highway.

Rain hammered against the windshield.

Inside the back seat, Isabella slowly regained consciousness.

Her wrists were bound.

A cloth bag covered her head.

She tried to speak.

"Where... where am I?"

No one answered.

The vehicle continued through the darkness.

Finally, the driver spoke.

His voice was calm.

Almost familiar.

"You've become a liability."

Isabella's breathing quickened.

"I did everything you asked."

"I know."

"Then let me go."

A quiet laugh came from the front seat.

"You still don't understand."

"The moment the camera recorded you..."

"...you stopped being an asset."

"...and became evidence."

Isabella felt panic rising inside her.

"Who are you?"

The driver reached up...

Removed his cap...

And looked into the rearview mirror.

For the first time...

Isabella saw his face.

Her eyes widened in absolute terror.

"No..."

"You're supposed to be dead."

The man smiled.

May you like

"So was your father."
