Chapter 7: The Ghost from Twenty Years Ago

Rain lashed against the black SUV as it wound through the mountain roads.
The headlights carved narrow tunnels through the darkness.
Inside the back seat, Isabella's wrists strained against the plastic restraints.
Her pulse pounded in her ears.
She stared at the man reflected in the rearview mirror.
It couldn't be.
She had seen his funeral.
She had stood beside her father as a coffin disappeared beneath the earth.
She remembered the rain.
The flowers.
The priest.
The tears.
Yet the face before her belonged to the same man.
A little older.
A little more scarred.
But unmistakably alive.
"No..." Isabella whispered.
The man smiled faintly.
"You haven't changed."
Her voice trembled.
"Uncle Victor..."
The driver said nothing.
He simply turned his eyes back to the road.
Isabella felt the blood drain from her face.
Victor Hale.
The man her father had always described as dead.
The man Jonathan's letter had named as the architect of everything.
The man who had vanished twenty years earlier.
He was alive.
And he had just kidnapped her.
Thorne Global Headquarters
Marcus finished reading the final page of Jonathan's letter.
His hands shook.
The last paragraph had been written in darker ink, as if added years after the rest.
Victor never forgives betrayal.
If he returns, he will not attack the company first.
He will attack the people you love.
Protect Khloe. Protect your child.
And never trust anyone who appears too helpful.
Marcus slowly lowered the letter.
"So my father knew."
Richard nodded.
"He suspected Victor survived."
"Why didn't he tell the police?"
Richard looked toward the hidden staircase.
"Because Victor spent decades building an invisible network."
"Witnesses disappeared."
"Evidence vanished."
"People who testified suffered... accidents."
Marcus clenched his jaw.
"So my father thought silence would keep us safe."
"Yes."
"And now?"
Richard's expression hardened.
"Now silence is killing people."
Bennett Medical Center
The hospital had transformed into a crime scene.
Police investigators photographed Isabella's empty room.
Forensic technicians dusted every surface.
Nothing.
No fingerprints.
No footprints.
No signs of forced entry.
The chief investigator frowned.
"It's impossible."
Richard arrived twenty minutes later.
He studied the room carefully.
Then his eyes settled on the IV stand.
"The medication bag."
A nurse blinked.
"What about it?"
Richard walked closer.
"It should still be half full."
The nurse checked the chart.
"It was."
She looked at the bag.
It was empty.
Every drop had been infused.
The forensic doctor examined the tubing.
A minute later, he looked up.
"She didn't receive normal medication."
"What do you mean?"
He held up the IV line.
"There are traces of a powerful sedative."
"Someone replaced her medication."
The room fell silent.
Richard asked the question everyone was thinking.
"Who had access?"
The charge nurse swallowed.
"Only hospital staff."
Somewhere in the Mountains
The SUV finally stopped outside an abandoned estate hidden deep within the forest.
Tall iron gates opened automatically.
The vehicle rolled inside.
The mansion had once been magnificent.
Now ivy covered the stone walls.
Broken statues lined the driveway.
Security cameras followed every movement.
Victor stepped out first.
Two armed guards opened Isabella's door.
They removed the hood from her head.
She looked around nervously.
"What is this place?"
Victor answered calmly.
"My insurance policy."
They escorted her inside.
The mansion's interior was nothing like its neglected exterior.
State-of-the-art surveillance systems.
Encrypted communication equipment.
Large digital maps covering entire walls.
Dozens of monitors displaying live feeds from locations across the city.
One monitor showed Bennett Medical Center.
Another showed Thorne Global Headquarters.
A third...
Showed Khloe's hospital room.
Isabella's heart skipped.
"You've been watching all of them."
Victor smiled.
"For years."
Headquarters
Marcus's phone rang.
Unknown number.
Richard immediately reached for it.
"Put it on speaker."
Marcus answered.
"This is Marcus."
For several seconds...
Only static.
Then a calm male voice spoke.
"Good evening."
Marcus froze.
"I've waited a long time to meet you."
"Who is this?"
"You've been reading your father's letter."
Marcus's heart raced.
"Victor."
A quiet chuckle.
"So Jonathan finally told you my name."
Richard signaled the cybersecurity team to begin tracing the call.
Marcus kept talking.
"What do you want?"
"I want what's mine."
"You murdered people tonight."
"They were unfortunate necessities."
Marcus's voice sharpened.
"You ordered Isabella to attack my wife."
Victor paused.
"No."
"I gave Isabella an opportunity."
"She chose violence herself."
Marcus almost shouted.
"You manipulated her!"
Another pause.
"People only become useful when they believe they're making their own choices."
Richard felt a chill.
The man sounded completely emotionless.
Almost clinical.
Victor continued.
"Tell me, Marcus."
"Has your father admitted the truth?"
"What truth?"
"That he didn't merely hesitate twenty-three years ago."
"He made a choice."
Marcus glanced at Jonathan's letter.
"It says you framed Anthony Rossi."
Victor laughed.
"Did it?"
"Jonathan always was a talented writer."
Marcus's grip tightened around the phone.
"Stop playing games."
Victor's tone suddenly became cold.
"Your father didn't save Anthony."
"He sacrificed him."
Richard's eyes narrowed.
Marcus looked confused.
"What are you talking about?"
"You'll understand soon enough."
The line went silent.
Then, just before disconnecting, Victor added one final sentence.
"Check the hidden room beneath your father's office."
Click.
The call ended.
Beneath the Office
Marcus and Richard descended the narrow staircase with flashlights.
The air grew colder.
Dust covered the concrete steps.
At the bottom stood a reinforced steel door.
The silver key marked with the letter V fit perfectly.
The lock clicked.
The heavy door swung inward.
Inside...
Rows of filing cabinets stretched across the room.
Shelves filled with old ledgers.
Boxes labeled by year.
A secure vault.
And in the center of the room...
A large corkboard covered with photographs.
Victor Hale.
Anthony Rossi.
Jonathan Thorne.
Richard Bennett.
Newspaper clippings.
Court documents.
Bank transfers.
Red strings connected dozens of names.
Marcus stepped closer.
His eyes landed on a photograph taken only three months earlier.
It showed Khloe leaving a prenatal appointment.
Another showed Marcus entering company headquarters.
Another...
A sonogram image of their unborn baby.
Someone had been tracking them long before the attack.
Richard whispered,
"This room wasn't built to hide the past."
Marcus nodded slowly.
"It was built to prepare for the future."
Then his flashlight stopped on something pinned to the very center of the board.
A recent photograph.
Jonathan Thorne.
Across the image, written in red ink, were three chilling words:
NEXT IS HIM.
Marcus's phone vibrated again.
This time it wasn't an unknown number.
It was his father's personal assistant.
Marcus answered immediately.
"Where's my father?"
The assistant's voice was shaking.
"Mr. Thorne left headquarters about forty minutes ago."
"Where did he go?"
"He didn't say."
Marcus felt dread settle in his chest.
"Is he answering his phone?"
"No, sir."
"We've tried seventeen times."
Richard looked directly at Marcus.
Neither man needed to say it.
Jonathan Thorne wasn't missing.
May you like
He was being hunted.
