Chapter 4: The Man in the Janitor's Uniform

The hospital corridor fell silent again.

The man pushing the cleaning cart never looked back.

His pace was unhurried.

Steady.

Professional.

Exactly the way every hospital janitor moved during the late evening shift.

A passing nurse smiled politely.

"Long night?"

He nodded without speaking.

She continued down the hallway.

Only after she disappeared around the corner did he lift his wrist slightly.

Hidden beneath the sleeve of his uniform was a matte-black smartwatch unlike any commercial model.

The screen displayed a single encrypted message.

OBJECTIVE FAILED

Three dots blinked.

A reply arrived almost instantly.

ERASE ALL LOOSE ENDS.

The janitor's expression never changed.

He tapped the screen once.

CONFIRMED.

Thirty Minutes Earlier

While the charity gala was still in full swing, the same man had entered Bennett Medical Center through a service entrance.

No one questioned him.

His ID badge scanned successfully.

His fingerprints matched the employee record.

His face passed the hospital's biometric security system.

Everything about him appeared legitimate.

Except...

He wasn't the real janitor.

The actual employee, Daniel Brooks, was lying unconscious inside a maintenance storage room in the basement, restrained with plastic zip ties but otherwise unharmed.

Whoever had planned tonight had prepared every detail.

No unnecessary violence.

No unnecessary attention.

Only efficiency.

Present Time

Inside the maternity recovery suite, Marcus sat beside Khloe's bed, refusing to let go of her hand.

Outside the room, two private security officers now stood guard.

Richard Bennett had personally ordered twenty-four-hour protection.

"No one enters without my authorization," he had instructed.

Not doctors.

Not nurses.

Not family.

Not even Marcus's father.

The last order had surprised everyone.

Especially Marcus.

He looked toward Richard.

"You think my father is involved?"

Richard didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he watched the fetal monitor tracing the baby's heartbeat.

Strong.

Regular.

Only then did he speak.

"I think someone very close to your family has hidden the truth for many years."

"That doesn't answer my question."

"No."

"It doesn't."

Marcus sighed.

"I've known my father my entire life."

Richard met his gaze.

"And I've known powerful men my entire life."

"They often become strangers when money is involved."

Across the Hospital

The fake janitor reached the staff elevator.

He pressed the button marked B2.

Restricted access.

The elevator doors opened anyway.

He stepped inside.

As the doors closed, he removed a tiny metal key from the handle of his cleaning cart.

It wasn't a key at all.

It was a miniature flash drive.

On it was a copy of every hallway security recording from the last two hours.

Not because he had stolen them.

Because someone inside the hospital had already downloaded them for him.

The realization was far more dangerous.

The conspiracy wasn't outside Bennett Medical Center.

It was inside.

Surveillance Command Center

The hospital's head of cybersecurity entered carrying a laptop.

"Director Bennett."

Richard looked up.

"What did you find?"

"We've reviewed every login to the surveillance network."

"And?"

"There was an unauthorized access request at 8:12 PM."

Marcus frowned.

"Was anything deleted?"

"No."

"Because the attempt failed."

Richard narrowed his eyes.

"Explain."

"The intruder used valid administrator credentials."

"Whose?"

The cybersecurity chief hesitated.

Then answered.

"Mine."

The room became still.

Marcus stared at him.

"But... you're standing right here."

"I know."

"My credentials were cloned."

Richard folded his arms.

"Can you trace the device?"

"We already did."

The technician projected a digital map onto the wall.

A blinking red dot appeared.

BASEMENT LEVEL B2

Richard immediately reached for his radio.

"Security Team Alpha."

A voice crackled back.

"Go ahead."

"Seal Basement B2."

"No one enters."

"No one leaves."

Basement B2

The fake janitor heard the announcement echo faintly through the ventilation system.

He smiled.

"They're finally catching up."

He abandoned the cleaning cart.

Instead, he walked toward a locked electrical room.

He swiped another access card.

The door opened.

Inside...

There wasn't electrical equipment.

There was a temporary command center.

Three laptops.

Encrypted satellite communication equipment.

Disposable phones.

A wall covered with printed photographs.

Marcus.

Khloe.

Richard.

Isabella.

Hospital blueprints.

Security schedules.

Every movement had been tracked for weeks.

The man calmly gathered the equipment into two black duffel bags.

No panic.

Only routine.

Then his phone vibrated.

The distorted voice returned.

"Status."

"The recordings are compromised."

"Expected."

"Is Isabella talking?"

"Not yet."

A pause.

Then the voice spoke with unsettling calm.

"She won't survive the night."

The janitor stopped packing.

"You want her eliminated?"

"I want silence."

"What about Marcus?"

Another pause.

"No."

"He's still useful."

The line disconnected.

The janitor stood motionless for several seconds.

Even he hadn't expected that order.

Executive Recovery Suite

Khloe suddenly opened her eyes.

Her breathing quickened.

Marcus leaned forward.

"What is it?"

She looked toward the doorway.

"There was someone..."

"Someone where?"

"In my room..."

"The night before the gala."

Marcus frowned.

"You never told me."

"I thought I imagined it."

"What happened?"

Khloe swallowed.

"I woke up around three in the morning."

"I saw a man standing beside the baby's ultrasound photographs."

Marcus felt a chill run down his spine.

"What did he do?"

"He didn't touch anything."

"He just looked at the pictures."

"And before he left..."

Khloe closed her eyes, trying to remember.

"He said something."

Marcus squeezed her hand.

"What?"

She repeated the sentence exactly as she had heard it.

"Some children are born into love."

"Others are born into war."

The room fell silent.

Richard slowly turned toward Marcus.

"I don't think tonight was the beginning."

Marcus nodded grimly.

"I think you're right."

Basement Pursuit

The security team burst through the basement doors.

"Hospital Security!"

"Show yourself!"

They searched room after room.

Maintenance.

Storage.

Generator control.

Laundry.

Nothing.

Finally, one officer kicked open the electrical room.

Empty.

The laptops were gone.

The photographs were gone.

The communication equipment was gone.

Only one item remained.

Pinned to the wall with a screwdriver.

A single white envelope.

Inside was one sheet of paper.

Printed in bold black letters.

THIS WAS NEVER ABOUT ISABELLA.

Richard stared at the message.

Marcus looked over his shoulder.

"What does it mean?"

Before Richard could answer, another security officer ran into the room, breathing hard.

"Director!"

"What now?"

"We found the real janitor."

"Alive?"

"Yes."

"But that's not the problem."

"What is?"

The officer's face had gone pale.

"The visitor registry."

"What about it?"

He held up a tablet.

"We checked everyone who entered the hospital today."

Marcus stepped closer.

"Did someone use a fake identity?"

The officer slowly shook his head.

"No."

"They used a real one."

"Whose?"

The officer looked directly at Marcus.

"The visitor who signed in under authorization from the Thorne family..."

"...was your father."

Marcus's pulse thundered in his ears.

"My father never came upstairs."

"No," the officer replied quietly.

"He never came upstairs."

May you like

"He went straight to Basement B2."
