# CHAPTER 2: THE SECRET BEHIND THE WALLS Sarah stood frozen in the middle of the guest room. The voice outside the door had disappeared. But the fear it left behind remained. She stared at the locked door, gripping Daniel's letter so tightly that the paper began to wrinkle in her hand. Her mind was racing. Who had locked her inside? And more importantly… Who was the person standing outside? The voice had sounded familiar. Too familiar. She searched through every memory she had of the Vance family. Daniel. Eleanor. Daniel's younger brother Adrian. His sister Victoria. Even the servants who had worked there for years. Everyone had a reason to hate her. Everyone had something to hide. A soft sound interrupted her thoughts. A key turning. Sarah stepped back. The door opened slowly. A figure entered. Sarah's heart stopped. "Victoria?" Daniel's younger sister closed the door behind her. Victoria Vance looked different from the last time Sarah saw her. The confident smile was gone. The perfect designer clothes were replaced by a simple dark sweater. For the first time, she didn't look like a Vance. She looked afraid. Sarah immediately became defensive. "What are you doing here?" Victoria looked at the letter in Sarah's hand. Then at her stomach. Then back at Sarah. "You found it." Sarah tightened her grip. "Found what?" Victoria swallowed. "The truth." The answer made Sarah's anger rise. "You expect me to believe you after locking me in this room?" Victoria looked away. "I didn't lock you in." "Someone did." "I know." "Then tell me who." Victoria remained silent. That silence told Sarah everything. "You know." Victoria closed her eyes. "Yes." Sarah felt her chest tighten. "Who?" Victoria hesitated. Then whispered: "My mother." The words landed like a stone. Sarah stared at her. "Eleanor?" Victoria nodded. "She knows you came here. She knew you would find Daniel's letter eventually." "Why?" Victoria looked toward the walls. Because even inside the room, she seemed afraid someone could hear. "Because Daniel was trying to expose her." Sarah felt the air leave her lungs. "Expose her for what?" Victoria walked closer. "Before I tell you anything, you need to understand something." She lowered her voice. "My brother wasn't the person you thought he was." Sarah's expression hardened. "You're defending him?" "No." Victoria's answer came immediately. "I am warning you." Sarah looked confused. Victoria continued. "Daniel made mistakes. Big ones. He lied to you. He hurt you." Her eyes filled with regret. "But he was trying to fix what he had done." Sarah looked down at the letter. "Why didn't he tell me?" Victoria didn't answer. And that was answer enough. Something terrible had happened. Sarah remembered the night everything collapsed. Daniel coming home late. His strange behavior. The argument. The documents she found hidden in his office. The woman named Claire. The accusation that Sarah had married into the Vance family for money. The entire family turning against her. She remembered Daniel saying nothing. That was the part that hurt the most. Not the lies. The silence. "Where is Daniel now?" Sarah asked. Victoria's face changed. "He disappeared." Sarah froze. "What?" "Three weeks ago." "Why wasn't I told?" Victoria looked at her sadly. "Because my mother made sure nobody contacted you." A cold feeling moved through Sarah. "What happened to him?" "We don't know." The room became silent. Then Sarah laughed quietly. A broken, bitter sound. "You want me to believe that Daniel disappeared and your family just accepted it?" "No." Victoria looked directly at her. "My family helped make him disappear." Sarah felt a chill. "What are you saying?" Victoria walked to the bookshelf. She pulled out an old book. Behind it was a hidden compartment. Sarah stared. The Vance mansion had secrets everywhere. Victoria removed a small black device. "A recording." She handed it to Sarah. "Daniel left this for you." Sarah hesitated. "Why?" "Because he knew if anything happened to him, you would be the only person who could destroy my mother." Sarah looked at the device. Destroy Eleanor Vance. Those words sounded impossible. The Vance family was one of the most powerful families in the country. Their companies were everywhere. Their influence reached politicians, banks, and corporations. What could one recording possibly do? Victoria saw the doubt in her eyes. "You still don't understand." She stepped closer. "My mother didn't build this empire through success." Sarah looked at her. "Then how?" Victoria's voice became quieter. "Through secrets." A storm seemed to gather outside. Rain began hitting the windows. Victoria continued. "For thirty years, Eleanor has collected information on powerful people. Politicians. Business leaders. Judges." Sarah frowned. "Blackmail?" Victoria nodded. "She doesn't destroy people with money. She destroys them with fear." Sarah remembered Eleanor's words. Everything involving my family is my business. Now she understood. The mansion wasn't just a home. It was a fortress. A place built on control. "But why me?" Sarah asked. Victoria looked at her stomach. "Because your child is the reason my mother panicked." Sarah froze. "My baby?" Victoria nodded. "Daniel discovered something before he disappeared." "What?" Victoria took a deep breath. "Your baby isn't just Daniel's child." Sarah stared at her. "What are you talking about?" Victoria looked terrified. "The child is connected to the biggest secret in the Vance family." Sarah's heart began pounding. "What secret?" Before Victoria could answer, a loud sound came from the hallway. Footsteps. Someone was coming. Victoria's face turned pale. "No." Sarah immediately recognized that fear. "Who is it?" Victoria whispered: "My mother." The footsteps stopped outside the door. Eleanor's voice came through. "Victoria." A pause. "Open the door." Victoria looked at Sarah. The fear in her eyes was real. Not an act. "Hide the device." Sarah quickly placed the recorder inside her coat. Victoria opened the door. Eleanor stood outside. Perfectly calm. Almost peaceful. That was what made her terrifying. Her eyes moved from Victoria to Sarah. Then she smiled. "I see you two have been talking." Neither woman answered. Eleanor entered the room. "Sarah, I think it's time we stopped pretending." She walked closer. "You came here looking for answers." Sarah remained silent. Eleanor tilted her head. "But you have no idea what questions you should be asking." A cold smile appeared. "That is your biggest weakness." Sarah looked directly at her. "And what is yours?" For the first time, Eleanor's expression changed. Only for a second. Then she smiled again. "You think you are brave." She stepped closer. "But bravery is useless when you don't know who your enemies are." Sarah held her ground. "Maybe I know now." Eleanor looked at her stomach. Then whispered: "No, Sarah." "You have no idea." The lights suddenly flickered. The entire mansion went dark. A scream came from downstairs. Everyone froze. Then came the sound of something crashing. Victoria looked toward the hallway. Eleanor's calm expression disappeared. Because whatever had just happened… Even Eleanor Vance had not expected it. And somewhere inside the darkness of the mansion… Someone had returned. Someone who knew every secret the Vance family had buried. Including the truth about Sarah's unborn child. / Chapter 9 / 14

CHAPTER 10: THE MAN BEHIND THE MASK

CHAPTER 10: THE MAN BEHIND THE MASK

The mansion had never felt so small.

Sarah stood in the middle of the great hall, surrounded by people who had spent years protecting secrets from her.

But now, for the first time, everyone looked equally lost.

Even Eleanor.

Even Alexander.

Even Daniel.

The recording had ended minutes ago, yet nobody moved.

Thomas Collins.

Sarah's father.

Alive.

The name kept repeating in her mind.

The man she had buried in her memories.

The man whose old photographs she had kept hidden in a small wooden box.

The man she believed she had lost forever.

Now he had returned through a screen.

A ghost with a voice.

A memory that refused to stay buried.

"Mom..."

Sarah's voice was barely above a whisper.

Claire looked at her.

Tears filled her eyes.

"I wanted to tell you."

Sarah shook her head.

"No."

She stepped back.

"Everyone says that."

Her eyes moved around the room.

"I wanted to tell you."

"I was protecting you."

"I had no choice."

She laughed bitterly.

"But nobody ever asked what I wanted."

Claire lowered her head.

Because she knew Sarah was right.

Daniel moved closer.

"Sarah..."

She looked at him.

"Not now."

Those two words hurt him more than anger.

Because anger meant there was still something left.

This was exhaustion.

Sarah was tired of discovering new pieces of a life she thought she understood.

Alexander watched quietly.

Then he spoke.

"Thomas always was good at disappearing."

Everyone looked at him.

Daniel's expression hardened.

"You know him?"

Alexander smiled.

"Of course."

Eleanor looked at him sharply.

"Don't."

Alexander ignored her.

"Thomas Collins was never just a simple businessman."

Sarah turned.

"What does that mean?"

Alexander looked at her.

"It means your father was one of the smartest people I ever met."

Claire stepped forward.

"Don't twist his story."

Alexander looked at her.

"Am I?"

Claire said nothing.

That silence made Sarah nervous.

"Mom?"

Claire closed her eyes.

"Your father was involved with the Vance family before I met him."

Sarah stared.

"What?"

Claire nodded slowly.

"He worked with Richard."

Daniel looked surprised.

"So Thomas knew my grandfather?"

"Yes."

Marcus crossed his arms.

"This keeps getting deeper."

Alexander smiled.

"It always was."

Sarah looked at him.

"Then explain."

Alexander walked toward the center of the room.

"Years ago, Richard Vance realized the empire he built was becoming dangerous."

He looked at Eleanor.

"He trusted too many people."

Eleanor remained silent.

"Thomas was one of the few people Richard trusted completely."

Sarah frowned.

"Why?"

Alexander answered:

"Because Thomas didn't care about money."

A pause.

"He cared about exposing the truth."

Sarah felt a strange emotion.

Pride.

Pain.

Confusion.

All mixed together.

"My father was investigating the Vance family?"

Alexander nodded.

"Yes."

Daniel looked at Eleanor.

"And you knew?"

Eleanor replied quietly:

"Yes."

Sarah looked at her.

"You knew my father was alive."

Eleanor didn't answer.

Sarah's expression changed.

"You knew."

This time, it wasn't a question.

Eleanor looked away.

"I suspected."

Sarah's anger returned.

"You suspected?"

Her voice echoed through the hall.

"All these years, you let me believe my father was dead."

Eleanor looked at her.

"I didn't know where he was."

"But you knew enough."

Eleanor had no answer.

For once, Sarah had cornered her.

Then a strange sound interrupted them.

A phone ringing.

Everyone looked.

It wasn't Daniel's phone.

It wasn't Victoria's.

It came from inside the old wooden box Sarah had brought from the guest room.

Her memories.

Her past.

Her father's belongings.

Sarah slowly approached it.

"No..."

She opened the box.

Inside was an old phone.

A phone she had never seen before.

The screen lit up.

One message appeared.

FROM: THOMAS.

Sarah stopped breathing.

Daniel moved beside her.

"Don't answer."

She looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because we don't know if it's safe."

Sarah stared at the phone.

Then pressed answer.

At first, there was only silence.

Then a man's voice.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakable.

"Sarah."

Her knees almost gave out.

She grabbed the table for support.

"Dad?"

The entire room froze.

The voice on the phone trembled.

"Yes."

A thousand emotions crashed over her.

Anger.

Relief.

Pain.

She wanted to scream.

She wanted to ask a million questions.

Instead, only one came out.

"Why?"

A long silence followed.

Then Thomas answered:

"Because if I came back too early, they would kill you."

Sarah closed her eyes.

"Who?"

Thomas's voice became serious.

"The person who has been controlling everything."

She looked around the room.

"Who?"

Thomas whispered:

"Sarah, listen carefully."

"You cannot trust anyone in that mansion."

Her eyes moved toward Daniel.

Then Eleanor.

Then everyone.

Thomas continued:

"The person who betrayed Richard..."

A pause.

"The person who destroyed our family..."

Another pause.

"Is someone you have already met."

Sarah's heart raced.

"Who?"

The answer came.

And it shattered the room.

"Your husband."

Nobody moved.

Sarah stared at Daniel.

Daniel looked like he had been punched.

"No."

Thomas continued.

"Sarah, Daniel Vance is not the man you think he is."

Daniel stepped forward.

"That's a lie."

The phone remained silent.

Then Thomas spoke again.

"Ask him about the night Richard disappeared."

Sarah turned toward Daniel.

Slowly.

Daniel's face had changed.

Because he knew that question.

And he was afraid of it.

Sarah whispered:

"Daniel..."

He looked at her.

"I can explain."

Those words were enough.

Because Sarah had heard them too many times.

"Explain what?"

Daniel looked around.

Everyone was watching him.

Even Eleanor.

Even Victoria.

Then Daniel finally said:

"The night my grandfather disappeared..."

His voice shook.

"I was there."

Silence.

Sarah felt her heart break.

"You were there?"

Daniel nodded.

"I was eighteen."

"And?"

He closed his eyes.

"I saw what happened."

Sarah waited.

"What happened?"

Daniel opened his eyes.

And the guilt inside them terrified her.

"My grandfather didn't disappear."

A pause.

"He was taken."

Sarah whispered:

"By who?"

Daniel looked toward the phone.

Then at Sarah.

And said:

"By someone wearing my father's face."

The mansion went silent.

Because everyone realized the impossible truth.

Richard Vance had not vanished.

Thomas Collins had not vanished.

Someone had been moving through their lives wearing different identities.

Someone had been hiding behind masks for decades.

And now Sarah finally understood.

May you like

The Vance family wasn't fighting over an empire.

They were fighting against a person who had stolen their entire history.
