# CHAPTER 2: THE SECRET BEHIND THE WALLS Sarah stood frozen in the middle of the guest room. The voice outside the door had disappeared. But the fear it left behind remained. She stared at the locked door, gripping Daniel's letter so tightly that the paper began to wrinkle in her hand. Her mind was racing. Who had locked her inside? And more importantly… Who was the person standing outside? The voice had sounded familiar. Too familiar. She searched through every memory she had of the Vance family. Daniel. Eleanor. Daniel's younger brother Adrian. His sister Victoria. Even the servants who had worked there for years. Everyone had a reason to hate her. Everyone had something to hide. A soft sound interrupted her thoughts. A key turning. Sarah stepped back. The door opened slowly. A figure entered. Sarah's heart stopped. "Victoria?" Daniel's younger sister closed the door behind her. Victoria Vance looked different from the last time Sarah saw her. The confident smile was gone. The perfect designer clothes were replaced by a simple dark sweater. For the first time, she didn't look like a Vance. She looked afraid. Sarah immediately became defensive. "What are you doing here?" Victoria looked at the letter in Sarah's hand. Then at her stomach. Then back at Sarah. "You found it." Sarah tightened her grip. "Found what?" Victoria swallowed. "The truth." The answer made Sarah's anger rise. "You expect me to believe you after locking me in this room?" Victoria looked away. "I didn't lock you in." "Someone did." "I know." "Then tell me who." Victoria remained silent. That silence told Sarah everything. "You know." Victoria closed her eyes. "Yes." Sarah felt her chest tighten. "Who?" Victoria hesitated. Then whispered: "My mother." The words landed like a stone. Sarah stared at her. "Eleanor?" Victoria nodded. "She knows you came here. She knew you would find Daniel's letter eventually." "Why?" Victoria looked toward the walls. Because even inside the room, she seemed afraid someone could hear. "Because Daniel was trying to expose her." Sarah felt the air leave her lungs. "Expose her for what?" Victoria walked closer. "Before I tell you anything, you need to understand something." She lowered her voice. "My brother wasn't the person you thought he was." Sarah's expression hardened. "You're defending him?" "No." Victoria's answer came immediately. "I am warning you." Sarah looked confused. Victoria continued. "Daniel made mistakes. Big ones. He lied to you. He hurt you." Her eyes filled with regret. "But he was trying to fix what he had done." Sarah looked down at the letter. "Why didn't he tell me?" Victoria didn't answer. And that was answer enough. Something terrible had happened. Sarah remembered the night everything collapsed. Daniel coming home late. His strange behavior. The argument. The documents she found hidden in his office. The woman named Claire. The accusation that Sarah had married into the Vance family for money. The entire family turning against her. She remembered Daniel saying nothing. That was the part that hurt the most. Not the lies. The silence. "Where is Daniel now?" Sarah asked. Victoria's face changed. "He disappeared." Sarah froze. "What?" "Three weeks ago." "Why wasn't I told?" Victoria looked at her sadly. "Because my mother made sure nobody contacted you." A cold feeling moved through Sarah. "What happened to him?" "We don't know." The room became silent. Then Sarah laughed quietly. A broken, bitter sound. "You want me to believe that Daniel disappeared and your family just accepted it?" "No." Victoria looked directly at her. "My family helped make him disappear." Sarah felt a chill. "What are you saying?" Victoria walked to the bookshelf. She pulled out an old book. Behind it was a hidden compartment. Sarah stared. The Vance mansion had secrets everywhere. Victoria removed a small black device. "A recording." She handed it to Sarah. "Daniel left this for you." Sarah hesitated. "Why?" "Because he knew if anything happened to him, you would be the only person who could destroy my mother." Sarah looked at the device. Destroy Eleanor Vance. Those words sounded impossible. The Vance family was one of the most powerful families in the country. Their companies were everywhere. Their influence reached politicians, banks, and corporations. What could one recording possibly do? Victoria saw the doubt in her eyes. "You still don't understand." She stepped closer. "My mother didn't build this empire through success." Sarah looked at her. "Then how?" Victoria's voice became quieter. "Through secrets." A storm seemed to gather outside. Rain began hitting the windows. Victoria continued. "For thirty years, Eleanor has collected information on powerful people. Politicians. Business leaders. Judges." Sarah frowned. "Blackmail?" Victoria nodded. "She doesn't destroy people with money. She destroys them with fear." Sarah remembered Eleanor's words. Everything involving my family is my business. Now she understood. The mansion wasn't just a home. It was a fortress. A place built on control. "But why me?" Sarah asked. Victoria looked at her stomach. "Because your child is the reason my mother panicked." Sarah froze. "My baby?" Victoria nodded. "Daniel discovered something before he disappeared." "What?" Victoria took a deep breath. "Your baby isn't just Daniel's child." Sarah stared at her. "What are you talking about?" Victoria looked terrified. "The child is connected to the biggest secret in the Vance family." Sarah's heart began pounding. "What secret?" Before Victoria could answer, a loud sound came from the hallway. Footsteps. Someone was coming. Victoria's face turned pale. "No." Sarah immediately recognized that fear. "Who is it?" Victoria whispered: "My mother." The footsteps stopped outside the door. Eleanor's voice came through. "Victoria." A pause. "Open the door." Victoria looked at Sarah. The fear in her eyes was real. Not an act. "Hide the device." Sarah quickly placed the recorder inside her coat. Victoria opened the door. Eleanor stood outside. Perfectly calm. Almost peaceful. That was what made her terrifying. Her eyes moved from Victoria to Sarah. Then she smiled. "I see you two have been talking." Neither woman answered. Eleanor entered the room. "Sarah, I think it's time we stopped pretending." She walked closer. "You came here looking for answers." Sarah remained silent. Eleanor tilted her head. "But you have no idea what questions you should be asking." A cold smile appeared. "That is your biggest weakness." Sarah looked directly at her. "And what is yours?" For the first time, Eleanor's expression changed. Only for a second. Then she smiled again. "You think you are brave." She stepped closer. "But bravery is useless when you don't know who your enemies are." Sarah held her ground. "Maybe I know now." Eleanor looked at her stomach. Then whispered: "No, Sarah." "You have no idea." The lights suddenly flickered. The entire mansion went dark. A scream came from downstairs. Everyone froze. Then came the sound of something crashing. Victoria looked toward the hallway. Eleanor's calm expression disappeared. Because whatever had just happened… Even Eleanor Vance had not expected it. And somewhere inside the darkness of the mansion… Someone had returned. Someone who knew every secret the Vance family had buried. Including the truth about Sarah's unborn child. / Chapter 10 / 14

CHAPTER 11: THE FACE OF THE ENEMY

CHAPTER 11: THE FACE OF THE ENEMY

The room felt frozen.

Not because of the storm outside.

Not because of the darkness surrounding the mansion.

But because of one sentence.

"Someone wearing my father's face."

Sarah stared at Daniel.

Her mind refused to accept what she had heard.

"What does that mean?"

Daniel looked exhausted.

Like he had been carrying the weight of those words for years.

"It means..."

He stopped.

Sarah's voice became sharper.

"Daniel."

He looked at her.

"It means the person everyone thought was Richard Vance after his disappearance wasn't Richard."

Silence.

Victoria stepped forward.

"Then who was he?"

Daniel looked toward Eleanor.

Nobody wanted to say it.

Because the answer was too dangerous.

Eleanor finally spoke.

"A replacement."

Sarah looked at her.

"What?"

Eleanor walked slowly toward the fireplace.

"Years ago, Alexander created a system."

Alexander's expression changed.

"Careful, Eleanor."

But she continued.

"A system designed to manipulate identities, records, and information."

Sarah felt cold.

"You mean..."

Eleanor nodded.

"Someone could become someone else."

Daniel added quietly:

"Not just pretend."

He looked at Sarah.

"Become."

The word was terrifying.

Sarah looked at Claire.

"Mom..."

Claire looked away.

Sarah immediately understood.

"You knew."

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

"I suspected."

"Everyone suspected."

Sarah's voice broke.

"Everyone knew something except me."

Nobody defended themselves.

Because nobody could.

Sarah turned away.

She walked toward the window.

Outside, the storm covered the mansion in darkness.

She felt like her entire life had been another person's story.

Her childhood.

Her father's death.

Her marriage.

Her pregnancy.

Everything connected to a war she never chose.

Daniel approached carefully.

"Sarah."

She didn't turn.

"What else are you hiding?"

His silence hurt.

She closed her eyes.

"That's what I thought."

Daniel stopped.

"I was going to tell you."

"When?"

"Before everything happened."

She laughed softly.

"Before or after I found out my husband might be responsible for my grandfather's disappearance?"

Daniel looked devastated.

"I am not responsible."

"Then prove it."

Daniel looked at her.

"What?"

"Prove it."

Her voice was calm now.

"If you want me to believe you, stop asking me to trust you."

A long silence followed.

"Give me the truth."

Daniel nodded slowly.

"Okay."

He looked around the room.

"I'll tell you everything."

Everyone gathered.

Because they all knew the next words could change everything.

"When I was eighteen, my grandfather Richard disappeared."

Daniel began.

"My father told everyone he had died."

Sarah listened carefully.

"But I didn't believe him."

"Why?"

Daniel looked at Eleanor.

"Because my father changed."

Eleanor lowered her eyes.

"After Richard disappeared, my father became different."

"How?"

"He became colder."

Daniel swallowed.

"He knew things he shouldn't know."

Victoria whispered:

"The family secrets."

Daniel nodded.

"He had access to everything."

Sarah frowned.

"But why would he pretend to be Richard?"

Daniel answered:

"Because Richard's authority was the only thing powerful enough to control the empire."

Marcus finally spoke.

"So someone stole his identity."

Daniel nodded.

"And used it to control everyone."

Sarah looked at Eleanor.

"How long?"

Eleanor answered quietly:

"Twenty years."

Sarah felt sick.

Twenty years.

A person had been living behind another man's name.

Building power.

Changing people's lives.

And nobody stopped him.

"Why didn't you expose him?"

Daniel looked ashamed.

"Because I tried."

Sarah turned.

"What happened?"

Daniel's voice lowered.

"The night I discovered the truth, I confronted my father."

A pause.

"He told me something."

"What?"

Daniel looked at Sarah.

"He told me my mother already knew."

Everyone looked at Eleanor.

She closed her eyes.

Daniel continued:

"I didn't believe him."

"But?"

"But then I found evidence."

Sarah felt her heart sink.

"What evidence?"

Daniel reached into his pocket.

He removed a small old photograph.

He handed it to Sarah.

Her hands trembled as she looked.

The photo showed a young Daniel.

Standing beside his father.

But behind them...

There was another person.

A person Sarah recognized.

Her blood turned cold.

"That's..."

Daniel nodded.

"Your father."

Thomas Collins.

Sarah stared.

"Why is he in this photo?"

Daniel answered:

"Because Thomas wasn't investigating the Vances from the outside."

"He was inside."

The room went silent.

Sarah looked at the picture again.

Her father.

Daniel's father.

The Vance family.

All connected.

Then Daniel said the words she never expected.

"Your father and my father were working together."

Sarah felt the world shift.

"No."

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

Claire stepped forward.

"Sarah, listen."

But Sarah raised her hand.

"No."

She looked at Daniel.

"Who am I supposed to believe?"

Nobody answered.

Because that was the real problem.

Every truth created another question.

Suddenly, the lights returned.

The mansion became bright again.

But something was wrong.

The security alarms were silent.

Too silent.

Marcus looked toward the entrance.

"Someone is inside."

Eleanor immediately turned.

"Impossible."

Marcus shook his head.

"No."

He listened carefully.

"Someone has been inside for a while."

Daniel moved toward Sarah.

"Stay close."

Then a voice came from the upper floor.

A voice everyone recognized.

"How touching."

Everyone looked up.

A man stood on the balcony.

Older.

Elegant.

Wearing a perfect black suit.

Sarah's breathing stopped.

Because she had seen him before.

In photographs.

In old memories.

In stories.

The man smiled.

"After twenty years..."

He looked around the mansion.

"...you finally discovered the truth."

Eleanor whispered:

"Richard."

The man smiled.

But it wasn't the smile of a lost father returning home.

It was the smile of someone who had been waiting.

"I missed this house."

Daniel stared.

"You're not my grandfather."

The man laughed.

"Very good."

He looked at Daniel.

"You were always smarter than your father."

Sarah stepped back.

"Who are you?"

The man looked at her.

Then smiled.

"That is the question everyone has been asking for twenty years."

He walked down the stairs slowly.

"My name is not Richard Vance."

Everyone held their breath.

The man stopped in front of them.

"My name is Victor Hale."

Sarah frowned.

"Then why pretend to be Richard?"

Victor smiled.

"Because Richard had something I needed."

"What?"

He looked at Sarah's stomach.

"Access."

A chill went through her.

"Access to what?"

Victor's smile widened.

"To the one thing your family protected for generations."

He looked at the entire room.

"The Vance inheritance."

Daniel stepped forward.

"You used all of us."

Victor nodded.

"Yes."

The answer was so simple it was terrifying.

Eleanor's eyes filled with anger.

"You destroyed my family."

Victor looked at her.

"No, Eleanor."

He smiled.

"You did."

The room went silent.

Victor turned toward Sarah.

"And now, Sarah..."

He extended his hand.

"It is time for you to come with me."

Sarah stared.

"Why would I?"

Victor looked at her calmly.

"Because if you don't..."

May you like

His eyes moved toward her stomach.

"...your child will never be born."
