# CHAPTER 2: THE SECRET BEHIND THE WALLS Sarah stood frozen in the middle of the guest room. The voice outside the door had disappeared. But the fear it left behind remained. She stared at the locked door, gripping Daniel's letter so tightly that the paper began to wrinkle in her hand. Her mind was racing. Who had locked her inside? And more importantly… Who was the person standing outside? The voice had sounded familiar. Too familiar. She searched through every memory she had of the Vance family. Daniel. Eleanor. Daniel's younger brother Adrian. His sister Victoria. Even the servants who had worked there for years. Everyone had a reason to hate her. Everyone had something to hide. A soft sound interrupted her thoughts. A key turning. Sarah stepped back. The door opened slowly. A figure entered. Sarah's heart stopped. "Victoria?" Daniel's younger sister closed the door behind her. Victoria Vance looked different from the last time Sarah saw her. The confident smile was gone. The perfect designer clothes were replaced by a simple dark sweater. For the first time, she didn't look like a Vance. She looked afraid. Sarah immediately became defensive. "What are you doing here?" Victoria looked at the letter in Sarah's hand. Then at her stomach. Then back at Sarah. "You found it." Sarah tightened her grip. "Found what?" Victoria swallowed. "The truth." The answer made Sarah's anger rise. "You expect me to believe you after locking me in this room?" Victoria looked away. "I didn't lock you in." "Someone did." "I know." "Then tell me who." Victoria remained silent. That silence told Sarah everything. "You know." Victoria closed her eyes. "Yes." Sarah felt her chest tighten. "Who?" Victoria hesitated. Then whispered: "My mother." The words landed like a stone. Sarah stared at her. "Eleanor?" Victoria nodded. "She knows you came here. She knew you would find Daniel's letter eventually." "Why?" Victoria looked toward the walls. Because even inside the room, she seemed afraid someone could hear. "Because Daniel was trying to expose her." Sarah felt the air leave her lungs. "Expose her for what?" Victoria walked closer. "Before I tell you anything, you need to understand something." She lowered her voice. "My brother wasn't the person you thought he was." Sarah's expression hardened. "You're defending him?" "No." Victoria's answer came immediately. "I am warning you." Sarah looked confused. Victoria continued. "Daniel made mistakes. Big ones. He lied to you. He hurt you." Her eyes filled with regret. "But he was trying to fix what he had done." Sarah looked down at the letter. "Why didn't he tell me?" Victoria didn't answer. And that was answer enough. Something terrible had happened. Sarah remembered the night everything collapsed. Daniel coming home late. His strange behavior. The argument. The documents she found hidden in his office. The woman named Claire. The accusation that Sarah had married into the Vance family for money. The entire family turning against her. She remembered Daniel saying nothing. That was the part that hurt the most. Not the lies. The silence. "Where is Daniel now?" Sarah asked. Victoria's face changed. "He disappeared." Sarah froze. "What?" "Three weeks ago." "Why wasn't I told?" Victoria looked at her sadly. "Because my mother made sure nobody contacted you." A cold feeling moved through Sarah. "What happened to him?" "We don't know." The room became silent. Then Sarah laughed quietly. A broken, bitter sound. "You want me to believe that Daniel disappeared and your family just accepted it?" "No." Victoria looked directly at her. "My family helped make him disappear." Sarah felt a chill. "What are you saying?" Victoria walked to the bookshelf. She pulled out an old book. Behind it was a hidden compartment. Sarah stared. The Vance mansion had secrets everywhere. Victoria removed a small black device. "A recording." She handed it to Sarah. "Daniel left this for you." Sarah hesitated. "Why?" "Because he knew if anything happened to him, you would be the only person who could destroy my mother." Sarah looked at the device. Destroy Eleanor Vance. Those words sounded impossible. The Vance family was one of the most powerful families in the country. Their companies were everywhere. Their influence reached politicians, banks, and corporations. What could one recording possibly do? Victoria saw the doubt in her eyes. "You still don't understand." She stepped closer. "My mother didn't build this empire through success." Sarah looked at her. "Then how?" Victoria's voice became quieter. "Through secrets." A storm seemed to gather outside. Rain began hitting the windows. Victoria continued. "For thirty years, Eleanor has collected information on powerful people. Politicians. Business leaders. Judges." Sarah frowned. "Blackmail?" Victoria nodded. "She doesn't destroy people with money. She destroys them with fear." Sarah remembered Eleanor's words. Everything involving my family is my business. Now she understood. The mansion wasn't just a home. It was a fortress. A place built on control. "But why me?" Sarah asked. Victoria looked at her stomach. "Because your child is the reason my mother panicked." Sarah froze. "My baby?" Victoria nodded. "Daniel discovered something before he disappeared." "What?" Victoria took a deep breath. "Your baby isn't just Daniel's child." Sarah stared at her. "What are you talking about?" Victoria looked terrified. "The child is connected to the biggest secret in the Vance family." Sarah's heart began pounding. "What secret?" Before Victoria could answer, a loud sound came from the hallway. Footsteps. Someone was coming. Victoria's face turned pale. "No." Sarah immediately recognized that fear. "Who is it?" Victoria whispered: "My mother." The footsteps stopped outside the door. Eleanor's voice came through. "Victoria." A pause. "Open the door." Victoria looked at Sarah. The fear in her eyes was real. Not an act. "Hide the device." Sarah quickly placed the recorder inside her coat. Victoria opened the door. Eleanor stood outside. Perfectly calm. Almost peaceful. That was what made her terrifying. Her eyes moved from Victoria to Sarah. Then she smiled. "I see you two have been talking." Neither woman answered. Eleanor entered the room. "Sarah, I think it's time we stopped pretending." She walked closer. "You came here looking for answers." Sarah remained silent. Eleanor tilted her head. "But you have no idea what questions you should be asking." A cold smile appeared. "That is your biggest weakness." Sarah looked directly at her. "And what is yours?" For the first time, Eleanor's expression changed. Only for a second. Then she smiled again. "You think you are brave." She stepped closer. "But bravery is useless when you don't know who your enemies are." Sarah held her ground. "Maybe I know now." Eleanor looked at her stomach. Then whispered: "No, Sarah." "You have no idea." The lights suddenly flickered. The entire mansion went dark. A scream came from downstairs. Everyone froze. Then came the sound of something crashing. Victoria looked toward the hallway. Eleanor's calm expression disappeared. Because whatever had just happened… Even Eleanor Vance had not expected it. And somewhere inside the darkness of the mansion… Someone had returned. Someone who knew every secret the Vance family had buried. Including the truth about Sarah's unborn child. / Chapter 11 / 14

CHAPTER 12: THE LAST INHERITANCE

CHAPTER 12: THE LAST INHERITANCE

The mansion fell into complete silence.

Victor Hale's words hung in the air.

"Your child will never be born."

Sarah felt every muscle in her body tense.

Her hand immediately moved to her stomach.

Not out of fear for herself.

For the life inside her.

Daniel stepped forward.

"You threaten her again, and you won't leave this mansion."

Victor looked at him with amusement.

"Still pretending you are the hero."

Daniel's eyes hardened.

"I know exactly what I am."

Victor smiled.

"No."

He looked around the room.

"You are a Vance."

The way he said the name made it sound like a curse.

"Your family has spent generations pretending they are different from everyone else."

He walked slowly through the hall.

"But look around."

His eyes moved from Eleanor to Daniel.

"Everyone here lied."

He pointed toward Claire.

"Everyone here hid something."

Then he looked at Sarah.

"And everyone here used her."

Sarah felt the painful truth of those words.

Because no matter who was right or wrong...

Everyone had made decisions about her life without asking her.

Victor noticed her expression.

"Do you see now?"

Sarah looked at him.

"See what?"

"That you cannot trust them."

Daniel immediately spoke.

"Don't listen to him."

Victor laughed.

"Why?"

He looked at Daniel.

"Because you never lied?"

Daniel went silent.

The silence was enough.

Victor turned back to Sarah.

"I know the truth about your father."

Sarah froze.

"What?"

"I know where Thomas Collins went."

Claire stepped forward.

"Don't."

Victor smiled.

"You still protect him."

Sarah looked at her mother.

"What is he talking about?"

Claire's face was full of fear.

Victor continued.

"Your father didn't disappear because he was hunted."

He paused.

"He disappeared because he made a choice."

Sarah stared.

"What choice?"

Victor looked at Claire.

"Tell her."

Claire closed her eyes.

"Victor..."

"Tell her."

The entire room waited.

Finally, Claire whispered:

"Your father chose to leave."

Sarah felt like she had been stabbed.

"No."

Claire looked at her.

"I didn't want you to know this way."

"Why?"

Sarah's voice shook.

"Why would he leave me?"

Claire couldn't answer.

Victor did.

"Because Thomas discovered the truth about the inheritance."

Sarah looked at him.

"And?"

"He realized your child was the key."

Daniel stepped forward.

"Enough."

Victor ignored him.

"Thomas believed that if anyone knew about Sarah, she would become a target."

Sarah shook her head.

"So he abandoned me to protect me?"

Victor nodded.

"Exactly."

She laughed softly.

A painful sound.

"Everyone keeps choosing for me."

Nobody spoke.

Victor watched her carefully.

That was the moment he wanted.

The moment when she felt alone.

But Sarah slowly lifted her head.

And something changed.

The fear in her eyes became anger.

"You are all the same."

Everyone looked at her.

Sarah stepped forward.

"You all think protecting me means controlling me."

Her voice became stronger.

"My father."

"Eleanor."

"Daniel."

"Victor."

She looked around.

"You all decided what I could handle."

A pause.

"But nobody asked what I wanted."

Daniel looked at her.

Sarah continued:

"My child is not an inheritance."

She placed her hand over her stomach.

"Not a weapon."

"Not a key."

"And definitely not something any of you can own."

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Even Victor seemed surprised.

Then he smiled.

"Interesting."

Sarah frowned.

"What?"

"You really are Richard's granddaughter."

The words made everyone uncomfortable.

Victor looked at Eleanor.

"That stubbornness."

A pause.

"That was always his greatest weakness."

Eleanor stepped forward.

"Where is Richard?"

Victor looked at her.

"Still protecting his empire."

"He's alive?"

Victor smiled.

"Somewhere."

Daniel clenched his fists.

"You know where."

"Yes."

"Tell us."

Victor laughed.

"Why would I?"

"Because you want the inheritance."

Victor's smile faded slightly.

"Careful."

Daniel continued.

"You need Sarah alive."

A silence followed.

Because Daniel was right.

Victor needed her.

And Sarah noticed.

For the first time, she had something everyone wanted.

Power.

Not the kind Victor had.

Not the kind Eleanor had.

Something different.

A choice.

Victor looked at Sarah.

"You think you have control now?"

Sarah didn't answer.

"You don't."

He reached into his pocket.

He removed a small device.

A screen appeared.

A live video.

Sarah's breath stopped.

On the screen was an old man.

Weak.

But alive.

Richard Vance.

Her grandfather.

Eleanor stepped forward.

"Richard..."

The old man looked into the camera.

His eyes were tired.

But clear.

Victor smiled.

"After twenty years, everyone finally sees him."

Sarah stared.

Richard looked directly at her.

"Sarah."

Her heart moved.

He knew her name.

"I am sorry."

A tear formed in his eyes.

"I should have protected you."

Eleanor looked shocked.

"How long have you had him?"

Victor ignored her.

Richard continued:

"Listen carefully."

The screen flickered.

"Do not let them make the same mistake I made."

Sarah leaned closer.

"What mistake?"

Richard's voice became weak.

"Trusting power more than people."

The screen suddenly cut.

Victor turned off the device.

"No more."

Daniel moved forward.

"Where is he?"

Victor smiled.

"Somewhere safe."

Sarah looked at him.

"Why show me?"

Victor answered:

"Because I want you to understand."

He stepped closer.

"The inheritance is not money."

Everyone became silent.

"What is it?"

Victor looked at Sarah.

"The inheritance is evidence."

A pause.

"Evidence that can destroy governments, corporations, and families."

Sarah felt cold.

"What evidence?"

Victor smiled.

"The evidence of who really controls the world behind the scenes."

Nobody spoke.

Because suddenly the Vance empire seemed small.

There was something bigger.

Much bigger.

Then a sound came from outside.

Vehicles.

Many vehicles.

Everyone turned toward the windows.

Daniel looked outside.

His face changed.

"What is it?"

He didn't answer.

Sarah moved closer.

Outside the mansion gates were dozens of cars.

But these weren't Victor's.

They belonged to another group.

On the doors was a symbol.

A symbol Sarah had never seen.

Except once.

On an old document in her father's box.

Claire saw it too.

Her face became pale.

"No..."

Sarah looked at her.

"What is it?"

Claire whispered:

"The organization your grandfather spent his entire life trying to destroy."

The mansion doors suddenly opened.

A group of people entered.

At the front was a woman.

Elegant.

Calm.

Powerful.

She looked directly at Sarah.

Then smiled.

"Hello, Sarah Collins."

Sarah froze.

Because the woman knew her name.

"I have been waiting for you."

Daniel stepped forward.

"Who are you?"

The woman smiled.

"My name is Elena Cross."

She looked around the mansion.

"And I am the person who owns the truth."

A pause.

"Not the Vances."

"Not Victor."

"Not even Richard."

Her eyes returned to Sarah.

"Me."

Sarah felt a chill.

Because she finally understood.

The Vance family was never the center of the war.

May you like

They were only one piece.

And Elena Cross had just arrived to claim the entire board.
