CHAPTER 13: THE EMPIRE ABOVE THE EMPIRE

CHAPTER 13: THE EMPIRE ABOVE THE EMPIRE
The arrival of Elena Cross changed the atmosphere inside the mansion.
Victor Hale, who had entered moments earlier believing he controlled the entire situation, suddenly became silent.
That alone frightened Sarah.
Because Victor was not a man who easily lost control.
He was someone who had spent twenty years wearing another man's identity.
Someone who had manipulated an entire family.
Yet now...
He looked cautious.
Almost worried.
Sarah noticed.
"Who is she?"
Nobody answered.
Not Daniel.
Not Eleanor.
Not Marcus.
Not even Victor.
Elena smiled slightly.
"Interesting."
She looked around the room.
"After all these years, the Vance family still has the same habit."
She walked forward.
"Everyone knows something."
A pause.
"But nobody tells Sarah."
Sarah's expression hardened.
"Then tell me."
The woman stopped.
For a moment, Elena studied her.
Not like an enemy.
Like someone examining a valuable object.
"I like that."
Sarah frowned.
"What?"
"Your attitude."
Elena smiled.
"You are not begging for answers."
She glanced at Eleanor.
"You are demanding them."
Eleanor stepped forward.
"Elena, this ends now."
The room became tense.
Elena looked at her.
"You still speak as if you have power."
Eleanor's face remained calm.
But Sarah noticed the slight change.
Fear.
Again.
Everyone feared Elena Cross.
That meant something.
"Who are you?" Sarah asked.
Elena turned toward her.
"My family built the organization your grandfather tried to destroy."
Sarah felt a chill.
"The organization."
Elena nodded.
"The one that controlled information, finances, and decisions behind the scenes."
Daniel looked at her.
"The people who manipulated the Vance empire."
"Among many others."
Marcus stepped forward.
"You were the one behind everything?"
Elena smiled.
"Not everything."
She looked at Victor.
"Some people were ambitious enough to help."
Victor's expression darkened.
Sarah looked between them.
"You worked together."
Elena nodded.
"For a time."
Victor laughed coldly.
"She betrayed everyone."
Elena looked at him.
"Interesting coming from a man who stole another person's identity."
Victor's jaw tightened.
Sarah noticed.
Everyone had betrayed everyone.
The entire history of these families was built on broken promises.
Daniel moved closer to Sarah.
"Stay behind me."
Sarah looked at him.
"No."
He stopped.
She shook her head.
"I'm done hiding."
Daniel looked surprised.
Sarah continued:
"If everyone wants me because of this inheritance..."
She touched her stomach.
"Then they can hear me."
She looked directly at Elena.
"What do you want?"
Elena smiled.
"Finally."
She stepped closer.
"Someone asking the right question."
Sarah didn't blink.
"What do you want?"
Elena answered:
"I want the truth released."
Everyone froze.
Victor laughed.
"You expect us to believe that?"
Elena ignored him.
"The Vance inheritance contains evidence proving that powerful people around the world have been manipulating events for decades."
Sarah frowned.
"Then why do you need my child?"
Elena's expression changed.
"Because the legal system Richard created requires a blood heir."
Daniel looked at Sarah.
"The trust."
Elena nodded.
"Without Sarah's child, the inheritance cannot be opened."
Sarah understood.
The baby wasn't valuable because of money.
The baby was valuable because of access.
But that didn't make it better.
"My child is still being used."
Elena looked at her.
"Yes."
The honesty surprised everyone.
Elena continued:
"And that is why I am different from them."
She pointed around the room.
"They want control."
A pause.
"I want the truth."
Sarah stared.
"You expect me to trust you?"
"No."
Elena answered immediately.
"I expect you to trust nobody."
That answer unsettled Sarah.
Because it sounded exactly like something her father would say.
Then Elena reached into her bag.
She removed a small file.
She placed it on the table.
"This belongs to Thomas Collins."
Claire immediately reacted.
"Where did you get that?"
Elena looked at her.
"From him."
Sarah froze.
"You met my father?"
"Yes."
"When?"
Elena looked at her.
"Three days ago."
The room exploded with reactions.
Daniel stepped forward.
"He's alive?"
Elena nodded.
"And he knows everything."
Sarah felt her chest tighten.
"Where is he?"
Elena looked toward the mansion entrance.
"Closer than you think."
Nobody moved.
Then a voice came from behind them.
A weak voice.
A familiar voice.
"Sarah."
The entire room froze.
Sarah slowly turned.
Her father stood at the entrance.
Thomas Collins.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
For a moment, Sarah couldn't breathe.
The world disappeared.
All the anger.
All the questions.
Everything.
There was only one thought.
Her father was standing in front of her.
"Dad..."
The word came out like a child's voice.
Thomas looked at her.
His eyes filled with tears.
"I'm sorry."
Sarah didn't move.
She wanted to run to him.
She wanted to hit him.
She wanted answers.
Instead, she whispered:
"Why?"
Thomas lowered his head.
"Because I failed you."
Sarah's eyes filled.
"You left me."
"I know."
"You let me believe you were dead."
"I know."
"Why?"
Thomas looked at everyone in the room.
Then at Eleanor.
Then Daniel.
Then Victor.
Finally, he looked at Sarah.
"Because the person who hunted me..."
A pause.
"...was someone I trusted with your life."
Sarah's heart stopped.
"Who?"
Thomas looked toward Eleanor.
Everyone followed his gaze.
But then he shook his head.
"No."
Sarah frowned.
"Then who?"
Thomas slowly pointed.
Not at Eleanor.
Not at Victor.
Not at Elena.
His finger moved toward Daniel.
The room went silent.
Daniel stepped back.
"No."
Thomas's voice was full of pain.
"I'm sorry, Daniel."
Sarah looked at her husband.
The man she loved.
The man who had protected her.
The man who had also hidden secrets.
Thomas whispered:
"You need to know the truth."
"Daniel Vance did not betray Richard Vance."
Everyone froze.
Sarah's confusion grew.
"Then why are you pointing at him?"
Thomas looked at Daniel.
"Because Daniel is not the person who betrayed this family."
A pause.
"He is the person who has been protecting the real traitor."
Daniel's face changed.
"What?"
Thomas looked at Sarah.
"The person behind everything..."
His voice became quiet.
"...is the one person Daniel has spent his entire life trying to protect."
Sarah felt cold.
Daniel turned slowly.
Toward the person standing beside him.
His mother.
Eleanor Vance.
The woman who built an empire.
The woman everyone feared.
The woman who knew every secret.
Thomas whispered:
May you like
"The real mastermind..."
"...is Eleanor Vance."
