# CHAPTER 2: THE SECRET BEHIND THE WALLS Sarah stood frozen in the middle of the guest room. The voice outside the door had disappeared. But the fear it left behind remained. She stared at the locked door, gripping Daniel's letter so tightly that the paper began to wrinkle in her hand. Her mind was racing. Who had locked her inside? And more importantly… Who was the person standing outside? The voice had sounded familiar. Too familiar. She searched through every memory she had of the Vance family. Daniel. Eleanor. Daniel's younger brother Adrian. His sister Victoria. Even the servants who had worked there for years. Everyone had a reason to hate her. Everyone had something to hide. A soft sound interrupted her thoughts. A key turning. Sarah stepped back. The door opened slowly. A figure entered. Sarah's heart stopped. "Victoria?" Daniel's younger sister closed the door behind her. Victoria Vance looked different from the last time Sarah saw her. The confident smile was gone. The perfect designer clothes were replaced by a simple dark sweater. For the first time, she didn't look like a Vance. She looked afraid. Sarah immediately became defensive. "What are you doing here?" Victoria looked at the letter in Sarah's hand. Then at her stomach. Then back at Sarah. "You found it." Sarah tightened her grip. "Found what?" Victoria swallowed. "The truth." The answer made Sarah's anger rise. "You expect me to believe you after locking me in this room?" Victoria looked away. "I didn't lock you in." "Someone did." "I know." "Then tell me who." Victoria remained silent. That silence told Sarah everything. "You know." Victoria closed her eyes. "Yes." Sarah felt her chest tighten. "Who?" Victoria hesitated. Then whispered: "My mother." The words landed like a stone. Sarah stared at her. "Eleanor?" Victoria nodded. "She knows you came here. She knew you would find Daniel's letter eventually." "Why?" Victoria looked toward the walls. Because even inside the room, she seemed afraid someone could hear. "Because Daniel was trying to expose her." Sarah felt the air leave her lungs. "Expose her for what?" Victoria walked closer. "Before I tell you anything, you need to understand something." She lowered her voice. "My brother wasn't the person you thought he was." Sarah's expression hardened. "You're defending him?" "No." Victoria's answer came immediately. "I am warning you." Sarah looked confused. Victoria continued. "Daniel made mistakes. Big ones. He lied to you. He hurt you." Her eyes filled with regret. "But he was trying to fix what he had done." Sarah looked down at the letter. "Why didn't he tell me?" Victoria didn't answer. And that was answer enough. Something terrible had happened. Sarah remembered the night everything collapsed. Daniel coming home late. His strange behavior. The argument. The documents she found hidden in his office. The woman named Claire. The accusation that Sarah had married into the Vance family for money. The entire family turning against her. She remembered Daniel saying nothing. That was the part that hurt the most. Not the lies. The silence. "Where is Daniel now?" Sarah asked. Victoria's face changed. "He disappeared." Sarah froze. "What?" "Three weeks ago." "Why wasn't I told?" Victoria looked at her sadly. "Because my mother made sure nobody contacted you." A cold feeling moved through Sarah. "What happened to him?" "We don't know." The room became silent. Then Sarah laughed quietly. A broken, bitter sound. "You want me to believe that Daniel disappeared and your family just accepted it?" "No." Victoria looked directly at her. "My family helped make him disappear." Sarah felt a chill. "What are you saying?" Victoria walked to the bookshelf. She pulled out an old book. Behind it was a hidden compartment. Sarah stared. The Vance mansion had secrets everywhere. Victoria removed a small black device. "A recording." She handed it to Sarah. "Daniel left this for you." Sarah hesitated. "Why?" "Because he knew if anything happened to him, you would be the only person who could destroy my mother." Sarah looked at the device. Destroy Eleanor Vance. Those words sounded impossible. The Vance family was one of the most powerful families in the country. Their companies were everywhere. Their influence reached politicians, banks, and corporations. What could one recording possibly do? Victoria saw the doubt in her eyes. "You still don't understand." She stepped closer. "My mother didn't build this empire through success." Sarah looked at her. "Then how?" Victoria's voice became quieter. "Through secrets." A storm seemed to gather outside. Rain began hitting the windows. Victoria continued. "For thirty years, Eleanor has collected information on powerful people. Politicians. Business leaders. Judges." Sarah frowned. "Blackmail?" Victoria nodded. "She doesn't destroy people with money. She destroys them with fear." Sarah remembered Eleanor's words. Everything involving my family is my business. Now she understood. The mansion wasn't just a home. It was a fortress. A place built on control. "But why me?" Sarah asked. Victoria looked at her stomach. "Because your child is the reason my mother panicked." Sarah froze. "My baby?" Victoria nodded. "Daniel discovered something before he disappeared." "What?" Victoria took a deep breath. "Your baby isn't just Daniel's child." Sarah stared at her. "What are you talking about?" Victoria looked terrified. "The child is connected to the biggest secret in the Vance family." Sarah's heart began pounding. "What secret?" Before Victoria could answer, a loud sound came from the hallway. Footsteps. Someone was coming. Victoria's face turned pale. "No." Sarah immediately recognized that fear. "Who is it?" Victoria whispered: "My mother." The footsteps stopped outside the door. Eleanor's voice came through. "Victoria." A pause. "Open the door." Victoria looked at Sarah. The fear in her eyes was real. Not an act. "Hide the device." Sarah quickly placed the recorder inside her coat. Victoria opened the door. Eleanor stood outside. Perfectly calm. Almost peaceful. That was what made her terrifying. Her eyes moved from Victoria to Sarah. Then she smiled. "I see you two have been talking." Neither woman answered. Eleanor entered the room. "Sarah, I think it's time we stopped pretending." She walked closer. "You came here looking for answers." Sarah remained silent. Eleanor tilted her head. "But you have no idea what questions you should be asking." A cold smile appeared. "That is your biggest weakness." Sarah looked directly at her. "And what is yours?" For the first time, Eleanor's expression changed. Only for a second. Then she smiled again. "You think you are brave." She stepped closer. "But bravery is useless when you don't know who your enemies are." Sarah held her ground. "Maybe I know now." Eleanor looked at her stomach. Then whispered: "No, Sarah." "You have no idea." The lights suddenly flickered. The entire mansion went dark. A scream came from downstairs. Everyone froze. Then came the sound of something crashing. Victoria looked toward the hallway. Eleanor's calm expression disappeared. Because whatever had just happened… Even Eleanor Vance had not expected it. And somewhere inside the darkness of the mansion… Someone had returned. Someone who knew every secret the Vance family had buried. Including the truth about Sarah's unborn child. / Chapter 13 / 14

CHAPTER 14: THE LAST LIE OF ELEANOR VANCE

CHAPTER 14: THE LAST LIE OF ELEANOR VANCE

The accusation did not sound real.

Not because it was impossible.

But because everyone in the room had already suspected it at some point.

Eleanor Vance.

The woman at the center of every secret.

The woman who knew everything.

The woman who always seemed one step ahead.

Sarah looked at her.

Waiting.

Waiting for anger.

Denial.

A sharp response.

Anything.

But Eleanor only stood there.

Silent.

That silence was more frightening than any confession.

Daniel stared at his mother.

"No."

His voice was barely audible.

"Eleanor..."

She looked at him.

And Sarah saw something she had never seen before.

Pain.

Not manipulation.

Not calculation.

Pain.

Thomas stepped forward.

"I didn't want it to be true."

Daniel looked at him.

"What are you talking about?"

Thomas's eyes were filled with regret.

"For years, I searched for the person responsible for Richard's disappearance."

He looked around the room.

"I blamed Victor."

Victor looked away.

"I blamed Alexander."

Alexander remained silent.

"I blamed myself."

Thomas looked at Eleanor.

"But eventually, I found the truth."

Sarah felt her heartbeat increase.

"What truth?"

Thomas answered:

"Your mother and I discovered that Eleanor had access to every piece of the inheritance system."

Claire immediately shook her head.

"No."

Thomas looked at her sadly.

"You knew parts of it."

Claire's face changed.

Sarah looked at her mother.

"You knew?"

Claire whispered:

"I knew she was hiding something."

Thomas continued:

"Eleanor wasn't trying to destroy the Vance empire."

Sarah frowned.

"Then what was she doing?"

Nobody answered.

Until Eleanor finally spoke.

"Saving it."

The room became silent.

Sarah stared.

"What?"

Eleanor looked exhausted.

"I knew Richard was making a mistake."

Thomas's expression hardened.

"Richard trusted people too easily."

Eleanor nodded.

"Yes."

She looked at Sarah.

"He believed honesty was enough to protect power."

A pause.

"It wasn't."

Sarah shook her head.

"So you manipulated everyone?"

Eleanor didn't deny it.

"Yes."

The honesty hurt more.

Daniel stepped closer.

"You framed Sarah."

Eleanor looked at him.

"I protected her."

Daniel's expression broke.

"Protected her?"

His voice rose.

"You destroyed her marriage."

"I pushed you away from her because being close to you made her vulnerable."

Sarah stared.

"What are you saying?"

Eleanor looked at Daniel.

"Your father was watching you."

Everyone froze.

Daniel whispered:

"My father?"

Eleanor nodded.

"The man you believed was your father."

Thomas stepped forward.

"You mean Victor?"

"No."

Eleanor looked at Sarah.

"Victor was only one piece."

Her eyes moved toward Daniel.

"Your real father was never the threat."

Daniel looked confused.

"Then who?"

Eleanor took a deep breath.

"The person controlling your father..."

She paused.

"...was Alexander."

Alexander's face changed.

"What?"

The room erupted.

Victor laughed quietly.

"Interesting."

Everyone turned.

Victor smiled.

"After all these years, the truth finally comes out."

Sarah looked at him.

"You knew?"

Victor nodded.

"Yes."

Daniel looked furious.

"You knew Alexander was behind everything?"

"I suspected."

"You let this happen?"

Victor's expression darkened.

"Everyone here made choices."

The room became chaotic.

Everyone had pieces of the truth.

Nobody had the whole picture.

Sarah closed her eyes.

Enough.

She stepped forward.

"Stop."

Everyone looked at her.

Her voice was calm.

But firm.

"I don't care anymore who has the biggest secret."

Silence.

She looked at Eleanor.

"I want the complete truth."

Then at Thomas.

"No more protecting me."

At Daniel.

"No more hiding things."

Finally, at everyone.

"No more lies."

Nobody spoke.

Because Sarah was right.

They had spent years fighting over control.

And the person who suffered most was the person who never asked for any of it.

Eleanor looked at her.

"You are more like Richard than you know."

Sarah shook her head.

"No."

She touched her stomach.

"I am not like any of you."

A pause.

"I am choosing something different."

For the first time, Eleanor looked at her with respect.

Then she walked toward an old cabinet.

She opened it.

Inside was a small black box.

"I kept this hidden for twenty years."

Daniel frowned.

"What is it?"

Eleanor placed it on the table.

"The final record."

Thomas looked shocked.

"No."

Sarah looked at him.

"What?"

Thomas whispered:

"I thought it was destroyed."

Eleanor opened the box.

Inside was a small recording device.

She pressed a button.

A voice filled the room.

Richard Vance.

Everyone froze.

"If you are hearing this..."

The recording continued.

"Then the people I trusted have failed."

Sarah listened carefully.

Richard's voice was weak.

"I know Eleanor will be blamed."

Eleanor closed her eyes.

A tear appeared.

"But she is not the enemy."

Everyone looked at her.

The recording continued.

"The person who betrayed me is someone I considered family."

A pause.

"Someone who knew my weaknesses."

Sarah felt a chill.

Richard continued:

"Someone who would sacrifice everything to control the inheritance."

The recording stopped.

Everyone waited.

Then another voice appeared.

A different voice.

A voice Sarah recognized.

Alexander.

"Richard."

The room froze.

Because the recording was not over.

Alexander's voice continued:

"You were always too sentimental."

A pause.

"That is why I won."

Sarah looked at Alexander.

His expression was gone.

No smile.

No confidence.

Only anger.

Eleanor whispered:

"You knew."

Alexander looked at her.

"Yes."

Daniel stepped back.

"My uncle..."

Thomas stared.

"All these years..."

Alexander laughed.

"You all spent decades looking in the wrong direction."

He looked at Sarah.

"Victor."

He pointed.

"Blamed."

"Eleanor."

He pointed.

"Feared."

"Thomas."

He smiled.

"Missing."

A pause.

"But nobody questioned me."

The room went silent.

Sarah finally understood.

The person behind the war was not the loudest.

Not the most feared.

The most dangerous person was the one who stayed hidden.

Alexander walked toward the door.

Security guards appeared behind him.

Daniel looked shocked.

"You brought them?"

Alexander smiled.

"Of course."

He looked at Sarah.

"The heir is finally here."

He reached for the door.

"Now the inheritance belongs to me."

Sarah stared.

"No."

Alexander turned.

For the first time, he looked surprised.

Sarah stood tall.

"You spent twenty years trying to control everyone."

She looked at Daniel.

"Everyone."

Then Eleanor.

"But you forgot one thing."

Alexander frowned.

"What?"

Sarah placed her hand over her stomach.

"You never controlled me."

The mansion went silent.

Then every screen in the room turned on.

A message appeared.

ACCESS GRANTED.

Everyone froze.

Because the inheritance system had activated.

May you like

And the only person who could activate it...

Was Sarah.
