CHAPTER 9: THE GHOST OF RICHARD VANCE

CHAPTER 9: THE GHOST OF RICHARD VANCE
Nobody spoke.
The name remained in the air like a forbidden word.
Richard Vance.
A man everyone believed had been a victim.
A man whose death had created the foundation of every tragedy that followed.
A man whose own daughter had just accused him of betrayal.
Sarah stared at Eleanor.
"Your father?"
Eleanor nodded slowly.
"Yes."
Daniel looked confused.
"But Richard was the one who created the trust. He was the one trying to protect the family."
Eleanor looked at him.
"That is what everyone believed."
Sarah looked at the old photograph in her hand.
Richard.
Claire.
Eleanor.
They were standing together.
Not as enemies.
As a family.
"So everything I know is wrong?"
Eleanor's expression softened.
"Almost everything."
Sarah laughed quietly.
A painful laugh.
"That seems to be the theme of my life."
Nobody answered.
Because nobody could deny it.
Daniel looked at Marcus.
"You knew about this?"
Marcus shook his head.
"I knew Richard was hiding something."
He looked at Eleanor.
"But I didn't know the truth."
Sarah turned toward Eleanor.
"Then tell me."
Eleanor remained silent.
"Tell me everything."
The old woman looked at the portraits hanging along the hallway.
For years, those paintings had represented power.
Legacy.
Respect.
Now they looked like ghosts.
"When Richard built the Vance empire, he believed money could solve any problem."
Eleanor began.
"But he eventually learned something."
"What?"
"Money doesn't create loyalty."
She looked at Sarah.
"Sometimes, the people closest to you are the ones who want the most from you."
Daniel frowned.
"Who was my grandfather's friend?"
Eleanor answered:
"Alexander Vance."
Victoria's face changed.
"Wait."
She looked shocked.
"Alexander?"
Sarah noticed.
"Who is Alexander?"
Nobody answered immediately.
Then Victoria whispered:
"Richard's older brother."
The room became silent.
Sarah looked at Eleanor.
"You mean your uncle?"
Eleanor nodded.
"He was the original heir."
Daniel understood.
"The person who was supposed to control the empire."
"Yes."
Eleanor continued.
"Alexander believed the company belonged to him by birthright."
Marcus added:
"But Richard disagreed."
Eleanor nodded.
"Richard believed the empire should belong to someone who could protect it, not someone who simply wanted it."
Sarah looked at her.
"So Alexander tried to take it?"
"Yes."
"But everyone thought he died years ago."
Eleanor looked toward the dark hallway.
"That is another lie."
A cold feeling moved through Sarah.
"He's alive?"
Eleanor didn't answer.
She didn't need to.
The silence was enough.
Suddenly, the mansion shook.
A loud explosion came from outside.
The windows trembled.
Victoria screamed.
Security rushed into the room.
"Mrs. Vance!"
"What happened?"
"The east wing has been attacked."
Daniel immediately moved.
"By who?"
The guard looked terrified.
"We don't know."
Marcus looked toward Eleanor.
"This is not random."
Eleanor nodded.
"No."
Sarah noticed something.
Everyone was afraid.
But not surprised.
They had been waiting for this.
"For what?"
She asked.
Everyone looked at her.
Sarah's voice became stronger.
"What are you all waiting for?"
Eleanor looked at her.
"The return of Alexander."
A chill passed through the room.
Daniel clenched his fists.
"If he is alive, why now?"
Marcus answered.
"Because Sarah is here."
Everyone looked at him.
Marcus continued:
"The heir has appeared."
Sarah touched her stomach.
"And my baby?"
Eleanor looked at her.
"Your child is the final piece."
Sarah's eyes narrowed.
"I am tired of hearing that."
She stepped forward.
"My baby is not a piece."
Nobody spoke.
Sarah continued.
"Not an inheritance. Not a weapon. Not a key."
Her voice trembled.
"It's a person."
Daniel looked at her with sadness.
Because he knew she was right.
Eleanor lowered her head.
"For years, I forgot that."
The admission surprised everyone.
The woman who controlled others was finally admitting her mistakes.
Then a sound came from the entrance.
A slow clap.
Everyone turned.
A man stood there.
Older.
Silver hair.
Elegant suit.
Calm smile.
Sarah immediately knew.
This was not an ordinary visitor.
This was someone who belonged in this mansion.
The man smiled.
"Eleanor."
Her face went pale.
"Alexander."
Daniel stepped forward.
"You are alive."
Alexander smiled.
"Disappointed?"
Nobody answered.
His eyes moved through the room.
Stopping on Sarah.
Then her stomach.
"So."
He smiled.
"The little heir finally arrived."
Sarah felt Daniel move closer.
Alexander noticed.
"Protective."
He laughed softly.
"Just like your father."
Sarah stared.
"My father?"
Alexander looked at her.
"Your real father."
The words froze her.
"My father is dead."
Alexander smiled.
"Is he?"
Daniel immediately looked at him.
"What are you saying?"
Alexander walked slowly into the room.
"Richard Vance did not die."
Everyone froze.
Eleanor whispered:
"Stop."
Alexander ignored her.
"He disappeared because he discovered the truth."
Sarah's heart raced.
"What truth?"
Alexander looked at Eleanor.
"That she was never the enemy."
Then he looked at Daniel.
"And neither was I."
Nobody moved.
Sarah felt lost.
Every person who entered her life brought another impossible truth.
Alexander continued.
"The real enemy was someone none of you ever suspected."
Daniel frowned.
"Who?"
Alexander looked toward the ceiling.
"The person who has controlled this family from the beginning."
A pause.
"The person who made Richard disappear."
The lights flickered.
Then every screen in the mansion turned on.
A face appeared.
A face Sarah had never seen before.
But everyone else recognized it.
Victoria whispered:
"No..."
Daniel looked horrified.
Eleanor closed her eyes.
Because the person on the screen was impossible.
The recording began.
"Hello, Sarah."
The voice was calm.
Familiar.
Too familiar.
"You don't know me yet."
The man smiled.
"But I know you."
Sarah stared.
The recording continued:
"I have watched you your entire life."
A pause.
"And now that you have arrived at the Vance mansion..."
The man looked directly into the camera.
"...it is time for you to learn why you were born."
Sarah couldn't breathe.
Then the man said his name.
A name that changed the meaning of everything.
"My name is Thomas Collins."
Sarah froze.
Her mother's face lost all color.
Because Thomas Collins was supposed to be dead.
Her father.
The man she had spent her entire life mourning.
And the man on the screen looked directly at her.
"Sarah..."
"I am sorry I left you."
The recording ended.
But the truth had only begun.
Because if Richard Vance was alive...
And Thomas Collins was alive...
Then the question was no longer who betrayed the family.

The question was:
Who had been pretending to be dead all these years?
