# CHAPTER 2: THE SECRET BEHIND THE WALLS Sarah stood frozen in the middle of the guest room. The voice outside the door had disappeared. But the fear it left behind remained. She stared at the locked door, gripping Daniel's letter so tightly that the paper began to wrinkle in her hand. Her mind was racing. Who had locked her inside? And more importantly… Who was the person standing outside? The voice had sounded familiar. Too familiar. She searched through every memory she had of the Vance family. Daniel. Eleanor. Daniel's younger brother Adrian. His sister Victoria. Even the servants who had worked there for years. Everyone had a reason to hate her. Everyone had something to hide. A soft sound interrupted her thoughts. A key turning. Sarah stepped back. The door opened slowly. A figure entered. Sarah's heart stopped. "Victoria?" Daniel's younger sister closed the door behind her. Victoria Vance looked different from the last time Sarah saw her. The confident smile was gone. The perfect designer clothes were replaced by a simple dark sweater. For the first time, she didn't look like a Vance. She looked afraid. Sarah immediately became defensive. "What are you doing here?" Victoria looked at the letter in Sarah's hand. Then at her stomach. Then back at Sarah. "You found it." Sarah tightened her grip. "Found what?" Victoria swallowed. "The truth." The answer made Sarah's anger rise. "You expect me to believe you after locking me in this room?" Victoria looked away. "I didn't lock you in." "Someone did." "I know." "Then tell me who." Victoria remained silent. That silence told Sarah everything. "You know." Victoria closed her eyes. "Yes." Sarah felt her chest tighten. "Who?" Victoria hesitated. Then whispered: "My mother." The words landed like a stone. Sarah stared at her. "Eleanor?" Victoria nodded. "She knows you came here. She knew you would find Daniel's letter eventually." "Why?" Victoria looked toward the walls. Because even inside the room, she seemed afraid someone could hear. "Because Daniel was trying to expose her." Sarah felt the air leave her lungs. "Expose her for what?" Victoria walked closer. "Before I tell you anything, you need to understand something." She lowered her voice. "My brother wasn't the person you thought he was." Sarah's expression hardened. "You're defending him?" "No." Victoria's answer came immediately. "I am warning you." Sarah looked confused. Victoria continued. "Daniel made mistakes. Big ones. He lied to you. He hurt you." Her eyes filled with regret. "But he was trying to fix what he had done." Sarah looked down at the letter. "Why didn't he tell me?" Victoria didn't answer. And that was answer enough. Something terrible had happened. Sarah remembered the night everything collapsed. Daniel coming home late. His strange behavior. The argument. The documents she found hidden in his office. The woman named Claire. The accusation that Sarah had married into the Vance family for money. The entire family turning against her. She remembered Daniel saying nothing. That was the part that hurt the most. Not the lies. The silence. "Where is Daniel now?" Sarah asked. Victoria's face changed. "He disappeared." Sarah froze. "What?" "Three weeks ago." "Why wasn't I told?" Victoria looked at her sadly. "Because my mother made sure nobody contacted you." A cold feeling moved through Sarah. "What happened to him?" "We don't know." The room became silent. Then Sarah laughed quietly. A broken, bitter sound. "You want me to believe that Daniel disappeared and your family just accepted it?" "No." Victoria looked directly at her. "My family helped make him disappear." Sarah felt a chill. "What are you saying?" Victoria walked to the bookshelf. She pulled out an old book. Behind it was a hidden compartment. Sarah stared. The Vance mansion had secrets everywhere. Victoria removed a small black device. "A recording." She handed it to Sarah. "Daniel left this for you." Sarah hesitated. "Why?" "Because he knew if anything happened to him, you would be the only person who could destroy my mother." Sarah looked at the device. Destroy Eleanor Vance. Those words sounded impossible. The Vance family was one of the most powerful families in the country. Their companies were everywhere. Their influence reached politicians, banks, and corporations. What could one recording possibly do? Victoria saw the doubt in her eyes. "You still don't understand." She stepped closer. "My mother didn't build this empire through success." Sarah looked at her. "Then how?" Victoria's voice became quieter. "Through secrets." A storm seemed to gather outside. Rain began hitting the windows. Victoria continued. "For thirty years, Eleanor has collected information on powerful people. Politicians. Business leaders. Judges." Sarah frowned. "Blackmail?" Victoria nodded. "She doesn't destroy people with money. She destroys them with fear." Sarah remembered Eleanor's words. Everything involving my family is my business. Now she understood. The mansion wasn't just a home. It was a fortress. A place built on control. "But why me?" Sarah asked. Victoria looked at her stomach. "Because your child is the reason my mother panicked." Sarah froze. "My baby?" Victoria nodded. "Daniel discovered something before he disappeared." "What?" Victoria took a deep breath. "Your baby isn't just Daniel's child." Sarah stared at her. "What are you talking about?" Victoria looked terrified. "The child is connected to the biggest secret in the Vance family." Sarah's heart began pounding. "What secret?" Before Victoria could answer, a loud sound came from the hallway. Footsteps. Someone was coming. Victoria's face turned pale. "No." Sarah immediately recognized that fear. "Who is it?" Victoria whispered: "My mother." The footsteps stopped outside the door. Eleanor's voice came through. "Victoria." A pause. "Open the door." Victoria looked at Sarah. The fear in her eyes was real. Not an act. "Hide the device." Sarah quickly placed the recorder inside her coat. Victoria opened the door. Eleanor stood outside. Perfectly calm. Almost peaceful. That was what made her terrifying. Her eyes moved from Victoria to Sarah. Then she smiled. "I see you two have been talking." Neither woman answered. Eleanor entered the room. "Sarah, I think it's time we stopped pretending." She walked closer. "You came here looking for answers." Sarah remained silent. Eleanor tilted her head. "But you have no idea what questions you should be asking." A cold smile appeared. "That is your biggest weakness." Sarah looked directly at her. "And what is yours?" For the first time, Eleanor's expression changed. Only for a second. Then she smiled again. "You think you are brave." She stepped closer. "But bravery is useless when you don't know who your enemies are." Sarah held her ground. "Maybe I know now." Eleanor looked at her stomach. Then whispered: "No, Sarah." "You have no idea." The lights suddenly flickered. The entire mansion went dark. A scream came from downstairs. Everyone froze. Then came the sound of something crashing. Victoria looked toward the hallway. Eleanor's calm expression disappeared. Because whatever had just happened… Even Eleanor Vance had not expected it. And somewhere inside the darkness of the mansion… Someone had returned. Someone who knew every secret the Vance family had buried. Including the truth about Sarah's unborn child. / Chapter 2 / 14

CHAPTER 3: THE MAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD

CHAPTER 3: THE MAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD

The darkness inside the Vance mansion felt alive.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The only sound was the heavy rain striking the tall windows and the distant rumble of thunder shaking the old walls.

Sarah stood beside Victoria, her hand instinctively protecting her stomach.

Eleanor Vance, the woman who had controlled entire companies with a single phone call, looked toward the hallway with something Sarah had never seen before.

Fear.

It disappeared quickly.

But Sarah saw it.

And that scared her more than anything else.

Because Eleanor Vance was not afraid of anyone.

Not competitors.
Not enemies.
Not even the people who hated her.

So who could make her afraid?

A servant rushed through the darkness with a flashlight.

"Mrs. Vance!"

Eleanor turned sharply.

"What happened?"

"The security system went offline. The cameras stopped working."

Eleanor's expression became cold.

"Impossible."

"The backup system isn't responding either."

Victoria whispered:

"Someone disabled it."

Eleanor looked at her daughter.

"No."

Her voice was quiet.

"Someone accessed it."

Sarah watched the exchange carefully.

The difference was important.

This wasn't a random power outage.

Someone had entered the Vance mansion's strongest defense system.

Someone who knew exactly how it worked.

Then another sound came.

A slow knock.

From the front door.

Everyone stopped.

The servant looked confused.

"Who would come here during this storm?"

Nobody answered.

Eleanor walked toward the entrance.

"Stay here."

Sarah almost laughed.

The woman who had spent the last hour threatening her was now telling her to stay safe.

The irony was almost painful.

Eleanor reached the main hallway.

The giant wooden doors stood between her and whoever was outside.

The servants gathered behind her.

The entire mansion waited.

Then Eleanor opened the door.

Lightning flashed.

And the person standing outside made the entire world seem to stop.

Sarah couldn't breathe.

Because she knew that face.

Even after everything.

Even after the pain.

Even after believing she would never see him again.

"Daniel..."

Her voice barely escaped.

Standing in the rain was Daniel Vance.

Alive.

But not the same.

His expensive suit was torn.

His face had bruises.

His eyes carried exhaustion.

But he was standing.

The man everyone believed had disappeared was back.

Victoria covered her mouth.

"Oh my God."

Eleanor didn't move.

For the first time in decades, the powerful matriarch of the Vance family looked completely shocked.

"You're dead."

Daniel looked at his mother.

"No."

His voice was cold.

"You wanted me to be."

The words cut through the hallway.

Sarah stared at him.

Her emotions collided.

Relief.

Anger.

Confusion.

She wanted to run to him.

She wanted to slap him.

She wanted answers.

Mostly, she wanted to know why he had let her suffer alone.

Daniel stepped inside.

The servants immediately moved away.

Nobody wanted to stand between him and Eleanor.

"You came back," Eleanor said.

Daniel removed his wet coat.

"I had to."

"Why?"

Daniel looked at Sarah.

And that was enough.

Eleanor noticed.

Her eyes narrowed.

"You contacted her."

Daniel said nothing.

"After everything I told you."

Sarah looked between them.

"What is happening?"

Nobody answered.

That made her angry.

"No."

Her voice became stronger.

"I am done standing in rooms where everyone knows the truth except me."

The mansion became silent.

Sarah stepped forward.

"Daniel."

He looked at her.

The pain in his eyes almost broke her anger.

Almost.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Daniel lowered his head.

"Because I was trying to protect you."

Sarah laughed bitterly.

"Protect me?"

She pointed around the mansion.

"I was destroyed. Your family called me a liar. They said I trapped you. They made everyone believe I was after your money."

"I know."

"No, Daniel."

Her voice trembled.

"You don't know."

She touched her stomach.

"I went through all of that alone."

Daniel looked at her.

His expression changed when he saw how much she had suffered.

"I know."

He whispered.

"I know because I was the reason it happened."

Sarah froze.

"What?"

Daniel looked at Eleanor.

"My mother didn't start destroying Sarah because she hated her."

Eleanor's eyes became dangerous.

"Daniel."

But he continued.

"She did it because Sarah discovered something."

Sarah's heartbeat increased.

"What did I discover?"

Daniel looked at her.

"The night you found those documents in my office..."

Sarah remembered.

The hidden files.

The strange names.

The financial records she couldn't understand.

"I thought they were proof you were cheating."

Daniel shook his head.

"They weren't."

"Then what were they?"

Daniel took a deep breath.

"They were proof that my mother had been using Vance companies to hide illegal financial operations for years."

Silence.

Sarah stared at him.

"No."

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

Eleanor stepped forward.

"Be careful with your accusations."

Daniel looked at her.

"I spent three months running because of what you did."

His voice became colder.

"You tried to erase me."

Sarah looked at Eleanor.

The woman remained calm.

Too calm.

"You expect them to believe you?"

Eleanor smiled.

"Daniel has always been emotional."

Then she looked at Sarah.

"Especially when it comes to protecting people he loves."

Sarah felt something strange.

Eleanor wasn't denying everything.

She was redirecting.

A tactic.

Daniel noticed too.

"You're still doing it."

"Doing what?"

"Controlling the story."

Eleanor smiled.

"Because I know the truth."

Daniel reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a small flash drive.

Everyone became silent.

"I have copies."

Eleanor's face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Victoria noticed.

"Mom..."

Daniel looked at Sarah.

"This is what I was trying to give you."

Sarah stared at the flash drive.

"Why me?"

Daniel answered immediately.

"Because you are the only person my mother couldn't control."

The words hit harder than expected.

Sarah looked away.

She didn't feel powerful.

She felt exhausted.

She had spent months trying to escape the Vance family.

Now she was being pulled deeper into their war.

Then suddenly...

A gunshot echoed through the mansion.

Everyone froze.

The sound came from upstairs.

A servant screamed.

Daniel immediately moved toward Sarah.

"Stay behind me."

Another gunshot.

The glass chandelier above them shattered.

Everyone dropped.

Sarah covered her stomach.

Daniel protected her with his body.

When the noise stopped, the mansion fell silent again.

Then Victoria looked toward the staircase.

Her face turned pale.

"No..."

Sarah followed her eyes.

A person was lying at the top of the stairs.

Blood spreading across the marble floor.

But it wasn't a stranger.

It was someone from the Vance family.

Someone who knew every secret.

Someone who had been ready to expose Eleanor.

Daniel whispered:

"This wasn't supposed to happen."

Sarah looked at him.

"What do you mean?"

Daniel stared at the body.

Then said the words that changed everything.

May you like

"Because the person who was supposed to die tonight..."

"Was me."
