# CHAPTER 2: THE SECRET BEHIND THE WALLS Sarah stood frozen in the middle of the guest room. The voice outside the door had disappeared. But the fear it left behind remained. She stared at the locked door, gripping Daniel's letter so tightly that the paper began to wrinkle in her hand. Her mind was racing. Who had locked her inside? And more importantly… Who was the person standing outside? The voice had sounded familiar. Too familiar. She searched through every memory she had of the Vance family. Daniel. Eleanor. Daniel's younger brother Adrian. His sister Victoria. Even the servants who had worked there for years. Everyone had a reason to hate her. Everyone had something to hide. A soft sound interrupted her thoughts. A key turning. Sarah stepped back. The door opened slowly. A figure entered. Sarah's heart stopped. "Victoria?" Daniel's younger sister closed the door behind her. Victoria Vance looked different from the last time Sarah saw her. The confident smile was gone. The perfect designer clothes were replaced by a simple dark sweater. For the first time, she didn't look like a Vance. She looked afraid. Sarah immediately became defensive. "What are you doing here?" Victoria looked at the letter in Sarah's hand. Then at her stomach. Then back at Sarah. "You found it." Sarah tightened her grip. "Found what?" Victoria swallowed. "The truth." The answer made Sarah's anger rise. "You expect me to believe you after locking me in this room?" Victoria looked away. "I didn't lock you in." "Someone did." "I know." "Then tell me who." Victoria remained silent. That silence told Sarah everything. "You know." Victoria closed her eyes. "Yes." Sarah felt her chest tighten. "Who?" Victoria hesitated. Then whispered: "My mother." The words landed like a stone. Sarah stared at her. "Eleanor?" Victoria nodded. "She knows you came here. She knew you would find Daniel's letter eventually." "Why?" Victoria looked toward the walls. Because even inside the room, she seemed afraid someone could hear. "Because Daniel was trying to expose her." Sarah felt the air leave her lungs. "Expose her for what?" Victoria walked closer. "Before I tell you anything, you need to understand something." She lowered her voice. "My brother wasn't the person you thought he was." Sarah's expression hardened. "You're defending him?" "No." Victoria's answer came immediately. "I am warning you." Sarah looked confused. Victoria continued. "Daniel made mistakes. Big ones. He lied to you. He hurt you." Her eyes filled with regret. "But he was trying to fix what he had done." Sarah looked down at the letter. "Why didn't he tell me?" Victoria didn't answer. And that was answer enough. Something terrible had happened. Sarah remembered the night everything collapsed. Daniel coming home late. His strange behavior. The argument. The documents she found hidden in his office. The woman named Claire. The accusation that Sarah had married into the Vance family for money. The entire family turning against her. She remembered Daniel saying nothing. That was the part that hurt the most. Not the lies. The silence. "Where is Daniel now?" Sarah asked. Victoria's face changed. "He disappeared." Sarah froze. "What?" "Three weeks ago." "Why wasn't I told?" Victoria looked at her sadly. "Because my mother made sure nobody contacted you." A cold feeling moved through Sarah. "What happened to him?" "We don't know." The room became silent. Then Sarah laughed quietly. A broken, bitter sound. "You want me to believe that Daniel disappeared and your family just accepted it?" "No." Victoria looked directly at her. "My family helped make him disappear." Sarah felt a chill. "What are you saying?" Victoria walked to the bookshelf. She pulled out an old book. Behind it was a hidden compartment. Sarah stared. The Vance mansion had secrets everywhere. Victoria removed a small black device. "A recording." She handed it to Sarah. "Daniel left this for you." Sarah hesitated. "Why?" "Because he knew if anything happened to him, you would be the only person who could destroy my mother." Sarah looked at the device. Destroy Eleanor Vance. Those words sounded impossible. The Vance family was one of the most powerful families in the country. Their companies were everywhere. Their influence reached politicians, banks, and corporations. What could one recording possibly do? Victoria saw the doubt in her eyes. "You still don't understand." She stepped closer. "My mother didn't build this empire through success." Sarah looked at her. "Then how?" Victoria's voice became quieter. "Through secrets." A storm seemed to gather outside. Rain began hitting the windows. Victoria continued. "For thirty years, Eleanor has collected information on powerful people. Politicians. Business leaders. Judges." Sarah frowned. "Blackmail?" Victoria nodded. "She doesn't destroy people with money. She destroys them with fear." Sarah remembered Eleanor's words. Everything involving my family is my business. Now she understood. The mansion wasn't just a home. It was a fortress. A place built on control. "But why me?" Sarah asked. Victoria looked at her stomach. "Because your child is the reason my mother panicked." Sarah froze. "My baby?" Victoria nodded. "Daniel discovered something before he disappeared." "What?" Victoria took a deep breath. "Your baby isn't just Daniel's child." Sarah stared at her. "What are you talking about?" Victoria looked terrified. "The child is connected to the biggest secret in the Vance family." Sarah's heart began pounding. "What secret?" Before Victoria could answer, a loud sound came from the hallway. Footsteps. Someone was coming. Victoria's face turned pale. "No." Sarah immediately recognized that fear. "Who is it?" Victoria whispered: "My mother." The footsteps stopped outside the door. Eleanor's voice came through. "Victoria." A pause. "Open the door." Victoria looked at Sarah. The fear in her eyes was real. Not an act. "Hide the device." Sarah quickly placed the recorder inside her coat. Victoria opened the door. Eleanor stood outside. Perfectly calm. Almost peaceful. That was what made her terrifying. Her eyes moved from Victoria to Sarah. Then she smiled. "I see you two have been talking." Neither woman answered. Eleanor entered the room. "Sarah, I think it's time we stopped pretending." She walked closer. "You came here looking for answers." Sarah remained silent. Eleanor tilted her head. "But you have no idea what questions you should be asking." A cold smile appeared. "That is your biggest weakness." Sarah looked directly at her. "And what is yours?" For the first time, Eleanor's expression changed. Only for a second. Then she smiled again. "You think you are brave." She stepped closer. "But bravery is useless when you don't know who your enemies are." Sarah held her ground. "Maybe I know now." Eleanor looked at her stomach. Then whispered: "No, Sarah." "You have no idea." The lights suddenly flickered. The entire mansion went dark. A scream came from downstairs. Everyone froze. Then came the sound of something crashing. Victoria looked toward the hallway. Eleanor's calm expression disappeared. Because whatever had just happened… Even Eleanor Vance had not expected it. And somewhere inside the darkness of the mansion… Someone had returned. Someone who knew every secret the Vance family had buried. Including the truth about Sarah's unborn child. / Chapter 3 / 14

CHAPTER 4: THE ENEMY INSIDE THE FAMILY

CHAPTER 4: THE ENEMY INSIDE THE FAMILY

The silence after the gunshot was worse than the sound itself.

Sarah stood frozen in Daniel's arms, unable to move.

The shattered chandelier pieces glittered across the marble floor like fragments of ice. The mansion that had always seemed powerful and untouchable now felt fragile.

Like a castle built on a cracked foundation.

Everyone looked toward the staircase.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody dared.

At the top of the stairs, the body remained motionless.

Victoria was the first to move.

"Adrian..."

Her voice broke.

She ran toward the stairs before anyone could stop her.

"Victoria, wait!"

Daniel grabbed her arm.

But she pulled away.

"That's my brother!"

She reached the top step and fell beside him.

Sarah watched from below.

Another Vance.

Another secret.

Another wound hidden inside this family.

Daniel walked slowly toward the staircase, his face becoming colder with every step.

Sarah followed him.

"Who is Adrian?"

Daniel looked at her.

"My younger brother."

"The one who helped your mother?"

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

That hesitation told Sarah everything.

"He was involved?"

Daniel looked at the blood on the floor.

"Yes."

Sarah felt sick.

How many people in this family were connected to Eleanor's secrets?

How deep did this go?

A security guard appeared from the back hallway.

"Mrs. Vance, the attacker is gone."

Eleanor stood perfectly still.

"Search every room."

"Yes, ma'am."

"And nobody leaves this mansion."

The guard nodded.

Sarah immediately turned toward her.

"You can't keep me here."

Eleanor looked at her.

"Right now, nobody leaves."

"You don't give me orders."

A faint smile appeared on Eleanor's face.

"You still don't understand."

Sarah stepped forward.

"I understand perfectly. You are afraid."

The servants looked shocked.

Even Daniel glanced at her.

Eleanor's eyes narrowed.

"Careful, Sarah."

"No."

Sarah's voice was steady.

"I spent months believing I was powerless because your family made me feel that way."

She looked around the mansion.

"But this place isn't powerful."

She pointed toward the staircase.

"It's falling apart."

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Daniel quietly said:

"She's right."

Eleanor looked at her son.

"Excuse me?"

Daniel stepped beside Sarah.

"The family is breaking because you built everything on lies."

The expression on Eleanor's face became empty.

A dangerous emptiness.

"Everyone leaves this room."

The servants immediately obeyed.

Soon, only Sarah, Daniel, Victoria, and Eleanor remained.

Adrian's body had been taken away.

But the evidence of what happened remained.

The blood.

The fear.

The unanswered questions.

Eleanor walked toward Daniel.

"You have no idea what you have started."

Daniel didn't move.

"I know exactly what I started."

"No."

Eleanor's voice became softer.

"You started a war you cannot win."

Daniel laughed quietly.

"You always thought power meant winning."

"And doesn't it?"

Daniel looked at her.

"No."

He glanced at Sarah.

"Power is what you have when everyone is afraid of you."

Then he looked back at Eleanor.

"Strength is what you have when people stand beside you because they choose to."

For the first time, Eleanor looked at Sarah differently.

Not with hatred.

With calculation.

Sarah noticed.

The woman was studying her.

Measuring her.

Trying to understand how dangerous she really was.

"What did Daniel tell you?" Eleanor asked.

Sarah stayed silent.

Eleanor smiled.

"Nothing?"

She looked at Daniel.

"Then he is still protecting you."

Sarah frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Daniel's expression changed.

"Eleanor."

But it was too late.

Sarah turned toward him.

"What aren't you telling me?"

Daniel looked away.

And Sarah felt something break inside.

Again.

Another secret.

Another person deciding what she could handle.

"Daniel."

He took a breath.

"Before we married, my mother investigated you."

Sarah froze.

"What?"

Eleanor interrupted.

"I needed to know who was entering my family."

"You investigated me?"

Sarah looked at Eleanor.

"Why?"

Eleanor answered calmly.

"Because nobody enters the Vance family without a reason."

Sarah felt anger rising.

"I was in love with your son."

Eleanor smiled slightly.

"That is what you believed."

Daniel stepped forward.

"Enough."

But Sarah looked at him.

"No."

Her eyes were filled with hurt.

"I need to hear this."

Eleanor continued.

"Your past wasn't as simple as you claimed."

Sarah shook her head.

"What are you talking about?"

Eleanor walked toward a cabinet.

She opened it.

Inside was a thick folder.

She placed it on the table.

Sarah stared.

Her name was written on the cover.

SARAH COLLINS.

Her hands became cold.

"What is that?"

"The truth about you."

Daniel immediately moved.

"Don't open it."

Sarah looked at him.

"Why?"

Because his silence answered.

Because he knew.

Because there was something inside that folder.

Something even he had hidden from her.

Sarah slowly opened it.

The first page contained a photograph.

A photograph of her.

But much younger.

Standing beside someone she recognized.

Someone who should have been impossible.

Her father.

Sarah stopped breathing.

Her father had died twelve years ago.

But beneath the photograph was a date.

Taken three years ago.

Impossible.

Her fingers trembled as she turned the page.

Then she saw a document.

A birth record.

Not hers.

Someone else's.

Her eyes moved down the page.

And then she saw the name.

The name that changed everything.

"Emily Collins."

Sarah whispered.

Daniel looked at her.

"Sarah..."

She looked up.

"Who is Emily?"

Nobody answered.

Until Eleanor spoke.

"Your sister."

The room disappeared.

Sarah stared.

"I don't have a sister."

Eleanor's voice remained calm.

"You thought you didn't."

Sarah's breathing became uneven.

"No."

She looked at Daniel.

"Tell me she's lying."

Daniel couldn't.

That was the answer.

Sarah stepped back.

All her life.

Everything she believed.

Everything she knew about her family.

Suddenly felt like a carefully constructed illusion.

Eleanor watched her reaction.

"You wanted the truth."

She touched the folder.

"Now you have it."

Sarah looked at the documents again.

Her unborn child.

The secret.

The Vance empire.

Her missing sister.

Everything was connected.

Then Daniel's phone suddenly rang.

Everyone turned.

Daniel looked at the screen.

His face changed.

"Who is it?"

Sarah asked.

Daniel didn't answer.

Because the caller ID showed a name that should not exist.

A name that made even Eleanor lose her composure.

Emily Collins.

Daniel answered.

No one spoke.

Only silence.

Then a woman's voice came through the phone.

"Sarah is in danger."

Daniel stood frozen.

The voice continued:

"Because Eleanor Vance isn't the biggest threat."

A pause.

"She never was."

Sarah felt a chill.

The woman whispered:

May you like

"The real person controlling everything..."

"...is inside the Vance family."
