# CHAPTER 2: THE SECRET BEHIND THE WALLS Sarah stood frozen in the middle of the guest room. The voice outside the door had disappeared. But the fear it left behind remained. She stared at the locked door, gripping Daniel's letter so tightly that the paper began to wrinkle in her hand. Her mind was racing. Who had locked her inside? And more importantly… Who was the person standing outside? The voice had sounded familiar. Too familiar. She searched through every memory she had of the Vance family. Daniel. Eleanor. Daniel's younger brother Adrian. His sister Victoria. Even the servants who had worked there for years. Everyone had a reason to hate her. Everyone had something to hide. A soft sound interrupted her thoughts. A key turning. Sarah stepped back. The door opened slowly. A figure entered. Sarah's heart stopped. "Victoria?" Daniel's younger sister closed the door behind her. Victoria Vance looked different from the last time Sarah saw her. The confident smile was gone. The perfect designer clothes were replaced by a simple dark sweater. For the first time, she didn't look like a Vance. She looked afraid. Sarah immediately became defensive. "What are you doing here?" Victoria looked at the letter in Sarah's hand. Then at her stomach. Then back at Sarah. "You found it." Sarah tightened her grip. "Found what?" Victoria swallowed. "The truth." The answer made Sarah's anger rise. "You expect me to believe you after locking me in this room?" Victoria looked away. "I didn't lock you in." "Someone did." "I know." "Then tell me who." Victoria remained silent. That silence told Sarah everything. "You know." Victoria closed her eyes. "Yes." Sarah felt her chest tighten. "Who?" Victoria hesitated. Then whispered: "My mother." The words landed like a stone. Sarah stared at her. "Eleanor?" Victoria nodded. "She knows you came here. She knew you would find Daniel's letter eventually." "Why?" Victoria looked toward the walls. Because even inside the room, she seemed afraid someone could hear. "Because Daniel was trying to expose her." Sarah felt the air leave her lungs. "Expose her for what?" Victoria walked closer. "Before I tell you anything, you need to understand something." She lowered her voice. "My brother wasn't the person you thought he was." Sarah's expression hardened. "You're defending him?" "No." Victoria's answer came immediately. "I am warning you." Sarah looked confused. Victoria continued. "Daniel made mistakes. Big ones. He lied to you. He hurt you." Her eyes filled with regret. "But he was trying to fix what he had done." Sarah looked down at the letter. "Why didn't he tell me?" Victoria didn't answer. And that was answer enough. Something terrible had happened. Sarah remembered the night everything collapsed. Daniel coming home late. His strange behavior. The argument. The documents she found hidden in his office. The woman named Claire. The accusation that Sarah had married into the Vance family for money. The entire family turning against her. She remembered Daniel saying nothing. That was the part that hurt the most. Not the lies. The silence. "Where is Daniel now?" Sarah asked. Victoria's face changed. "He disappeared." Sarah froze. "What?" "Three weeks ago." "Why wasn't I told?" Victoria looked at her sadly. "Because my mother made sure nobody contacted you." A cold feeling moved through Sarah. "What happened to him?" "We don't know." The room became silent. Then Sarah laughed quietly. A broken, bitter sound. "You want me to believe that Daniel disappeared and your family just accepted it?" "No." Victoria looked directly at her. "My family helped make him disappear." Sarah felt a chill. "What are you saying?" Victoria walked to the bookshelf. She pulled out an old book. Behind it was a hidden compartment. Sarah stared. The Vance mansion had secrets everywhere. Victoria removed a small black device. "A recording." She handed it to Sarah. "Daniel left this for you." Sarah hesitated. "Why?" "Because he knew if anything happened to him, you would be the only person who could destroy my mother." Sarah looked at the device. Destroy Eleanor Vance. Those words sounded impossible. The Vance family was one of the most powerful families in the country. Their companies were everywhere. Their influence reached politicians, banks, and corporations. What could one recording possibly do? Victoria saw the doubt in her eyes. "You still don't understand." She stepped closer. "My mother didn't build this empire through success." Sarah looked at her. "Then how?" Victoria's voice became quieter. "Through secrets." A storm seemed to gather outside. Rain began hitting the windows. Victoria continued. "For thirty years, Eleanor has collected information on powerful people. Politicians. Business leaders. Judges." Sarah frowned. "Blackmail?" Victoria nodded. "She doesn't destroy people with money. She destroys them with fear." Sarah remembered Eleanor's words. Everything involving my family is my business. Now she understood. The mansion wasn't just a home. It was a fortress. A place built on control. "But why me?" Sarah asked. Victoria looked at her stomach. "Because your child is the reason my mother panicked." Sarah froze. "My baby?" Victoria nodded. "Daniel discovered something before he disappeared." "What?" Victoria took a deep breath. "Your baby isn't just Daniel's child." Sarah stared at her. "What are you talking about?" Victoria looked terrified. "The child is connected to the biggest secret in the Vance family." Sarah's heart began pounding. "What secret?" Before Victoria could answer, a loud sound came from the hallway. Footsteps. Someone was coming. Victoria's face turned pale. "No." Sarah immediately recognized that fear. "Who is it?" Victoria whispered: "My mother." The footsteps stopped outside the door. Eleanor's voice came through. "Victoria." A pause. "Open the door." Victoria looked at Sarah. The fear in her eyes was real. Not an act. "Hide the device." Sarah quickly placed the recorder inside her coat. Victoria opened the door. Eleanor stood outside. Perfectly calm. Almost peaceful. That was what made her terrifying. Her eyes moved from Victoria to Sarah. Then she smiled. "I see you two have been talking." Neither woman answered. Eleanor entered the room. "Sarah, I think it's time we stopped pretending." She walked closer. "You came here looking for answers." Sarah remained silent. Eleanor tilted her head. "But you have no idea what questions you should be asking." A cold smile appeared. "That is your biggest weakness." Sarah looked directly at her. "And what is yours?" For the first time, Eleanor's expression changed. Only for a second. Then she smiled again. "You think you are brave." She stepped closer. "But bravery is useless when you don't know who your enemies are." Sarah held her ground. "Maybe I know now." Eleanor looked at her stomach. Then whispered: "No, Sarah." "You have no idea." The lights suddenly flickered. The entire mansion went dark. A scream came from downstairs. Everyone froze. Then came the sound of something crashing. Victoria looked toward the hallway. Eleanor's calm expression disappeared. Because whatever had just happened… Even Eleanor Vance had not expected it. And somewhere inside the darkness of the mansion… Someone had returned. Someone who knew every secret the Vance family had buried. Including the truth about Sarah's unborn child. / Chapter 7 / 14

CHAPTER 8: THE BETRAYAL HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT

CHAPTER 8: THE BETRAYAL HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT

The final words of Richard Vance continued to echo inside the mansion.

"The person you trust the most..."

"...is the person who destroyed everything."

Nobody spoke.

The silence was heavier than any accusation.

Sarah looked around the room.

At Eleanor.

At Daniel.

At Victoria.

At her mother.

Everyone had secrets.

Everyone had lied.

But now there was something different.

Suspicion.

A poison slowly spreading between them.

Sarah hated that feeling.

She hated that she could no longer look at anyone without wondering what they were hiding.

Daniel noticed her expression.

"Sarah."

She looked at him.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Because they both knew the same question was in her mind.

Was it him?

Daniel took a step closer.

"I know what you're thinking."

"Do you?"

His face tightened.

"Yes."

"Then answer it."

Daniel stayed silent.

Sarah's heart sank.

"Did you betray your father?"

"No."

The answer came quickly.

But Sarah had heard that before.

Promises.

Explanations.

Half-truths.

She needed proof.

Not words.

"I don't know what to believe anymore."

Daniel looked hurt.

"I understand."

"No, you don't."

Her voice cracked.

"You had years to know this world. You knew your family was dangerous."

She touched her stomach.

"I walked into this without knowing anything."

Daniel lowered his head.

"And I'm sorry."

Sarah looked away.

Sorry wasn't enough anymore.

A sudden sound interrupted them.

The projector turned back on.

Everyone turned.

The screen showed a different video.

Richard Vance again.

But this time, he looked older.

Weaker.

"This message is for Sarah."

Her breath stopped.

Richard looked directly at the camera.

"If you are seeing this, then the first message has already caused doubt."

The image flickered.

"Good."

Everyone looked confused.

"Because doubt is necessary."

Richard continued.

"The person who betrayed me is not the person everyone suspects."

Eleanor looked at the screen.

Her expression changed.

Richard's voice became lower.

"The greatest deception is making people believe the obvious answer."

The video paused.

Then a document appeared.

A signature.

Sarah leaned closer.

She recognized it.

The signature belonged to Daniel.

Her heart dropped.

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

"No."

Everyone looked at him.

Victoria stared.

"Daniel?"

"I didn't sign that."

Sarah looked at the screen.

The document showed an agreement.

A transfer of confidential Vance information.

Authorized by Daniel Vance.

Dated ten years ago.

Sarah turned toward him.

"You were involved."

Daniel looked terrified.

"I was eighteen."

"That doesn't answer my question."

Daniel stepped closer.

"I didn't know what it was."

Eleanor spoke quietly.

"He was young."

Sarah looked at her.

"You're defending him?"

Eleanor's eyes met hers.

"Because for once, I am telling the truth."

The room became silent.

Daniel looked at the screen again.

"I remember this."

Everyone turned.

"What?"

Daniel's face became pale.

"I remember signing something."

Sarah felt a cold wave.

"What did you sign?"

Daniel closed his eyes.

"My mother told me it was a family agreement."

Eleanor looked away.

Daniel continued.

"She said it was necessary to protect the company."

Sarah stared.

"And you believed her."

Daniel nodded.

"I was a kid."

"But your signature gave someone power."

Daniel didn't answer.

Because he knew.

The damage was done.

Suddenly, Marcus Vale stepped from the shadows near the doorway.

Everyone turned.

Daniel immediately moved in front of Sarah.

"How did you get inside?"

Marcus smiled.

"The same way everyone gets inside this mansion."

He looked around.

"Someone lets them in."

Eleanor's eyes narrowed.

"Who helped you?"

Marcus ignored her.

He looked at Sarah.

"You finally understand."

Sarah frowned.

"What?"

Marcus walked closer.

"The Vance family doesn't protect secrets."

He looked at the portraits on the wall.

"They protect the people who benefit from them."

Sarah stared.

"Why are you helping me?"

Marcus smiled.

"I'm not."

The answer surprised her.

"I'm helping myself."

He reached into his coat and removed an old envelope.

He placed it on the table.

"This belonged to Richard Vance."

Daniel looked at it.

"Where did you get that?"

"From the person who killed him."

Everyone froze.

Sarah whispered:

"Who?"

Marcus looked toward Eleanor.

Then toward Daniel.

"I don't know."

The answer confused everyone.

"But Richard knew."

Marcus pointed at the envelope.

"He wrote the name down."

Sarah looked at the envelope.

"Whose name?"

Marcus smiled slightly.

"Open it."

Nobody moved.

The envelope looked ordinary.

But Sarah knew better now.

Nothing connected to the Vance family was ordinary.

She reached forward.

Daniel grabbed her hand.

"Wait."

Sarah looked at him.

"What?"

"If this is another trap..."

She pulled her hand away.

"Everything is a trap."

The words hurt him.

But Sarah opened the envelope.

Inside was a single photograph.

Her entire body froze.

It showed three people.

Richard Vance.

Her mother Claire.

And someone else.

Someone she recognized.

Someone who had been standing beside her throughout this entire nightmare.

Her fingers began shaking.

"No..."

Daniel looked at the photograph.

His face lost all color.

Victoria covered her mouth.

Because they all recognized the person.

The person in the photo.

The person Richard trusted.

The person who knew every secret.

The person who had been helping them uncover the truth.

Sarah slowly raised her eyes.

She looked at her mother.

Claire looked devastated.

Then Sarah whispered:

"Why is Eleanor in this picture?"

The room froze.

Because the answer was impossible.

The photograph was taken twenty years ago.

Before the betrayal.

Before the empire began collapsing.

Before anyone became enemies.

Eleanor wasn't standing against Richard.

She was standing beside him.

Like an ally.

Like family.

Marcus spoke quietly:

"Because the truth is much worse than you think."

Sarah stared.

"What truth?"

Marcus looked at Eleanor.

"The woman you believe destroyed this family..."

A pause.

"...was actually the person trying to save it."

Nobody breathed.

Eleanor closed her eyes.

And for the first time...

She looked like someone who had been carrying a burden too heavy for too long.

Then she whispered:

"I should have told you years ago."

Sarah's voice trembled.

"Told me what?"

Eleanor opened her eyes.

"The night your grandfather died..."

She looked at Sarah.

"I was not the one who betrayed him."

A pause.

"I was the one who watched the real traitor walk away."

The mansion fell silent.

Then Eleanor said the name.

The name that shattered everything.

"The traitor was Richard Vance's closest friend."

Daniel frowned.

"Who?"

Eleanor looked toward the entrance.

At the person standing there.

Someone who had just arrived.

Someone nobody expected.

"My father."

Sarah froze.

Because the person Eleanor had accused...

Was not a stranger.

It was someone connected to every single secret.

May you like

Someone who had been dead for years.

Richard Vance himself.
