# CHAPTER 2: THE SECRET BEHIND THE WALLS Sarah stood frozen in the middle of the guest room. The voice outside the door had disappeared. But the fear it left behind remained. She stared at the locked door, gripping Daniel's letter so tightly that the paper began to wrinkle in her hand. Her mind was racing. Who had locked her inside? And more importantly… Who was the person standing outside? The voice had sounded familiar. Too familiar. She searched through every memory she had of the Vance family. Daniel. Eleanor. Daniel's younger brother Adrian. His sister Victoria. Even the servants who had worked there for years. Everyone had a reason to hate her. Everyone had something to hide. A soft sound interrupted her thoughts. A key turning. Sarah stepped back. The door opened slowly. A figure entered. Sarah's heart stopped. "Victoria?" Daniel's younger sister closed the door behind her. Victoria Vance looked different from the last time Sarah saw her. The confident smile was gone. The perfect designer clothes were replaced by a simple dark sweater. For the first time, she didn't look like a Vance. She looked afraid. Sarah immediately became defensive. "What are you doing here?" Victoria looked at the letter in Sarah's hand. Then at her stomach. Then back at Sarah. "You found it." Sarah tightened her grip. "Found what?" Victoria swallowed. "The truth." The answer made Sarah's anger rise. "You expect me to believe you after locking me in this room?" Victoria looked away. "I didn't lock you in." "Someone did." "I know." "Then tell me who." Victoria remained silent. That silence told Sarah everything. "You know." Victoria closed her eyes. "Yes." Sarah felt her chest tighten. "Who?" Victoria hesitated. Then whispered: "My mother." The words landed like a stone. Sarah stared at her. "Eleanor?" Victoria nodded. "She knows you came here. She knew you would find Daniel's letter eventually." "Why?" Victoria looked toward the walls. Because even inside the room, she seemed afraid someone could hear. "Because Daniel was trying to expose her." Sarah felt the air leave her lungs. "Expose her for what?" Victoria walked closer. "Before I tell you anything, you need to understand something." She lowered her voice. "My brother wasn't the person you thought he was." Sarah's expression hardened. "You're defending him?" "No." Victoria's answer came immediately. "I am warning you." Sarah looked confused. Victoria continued. "Daniel made mistakes. Big ones. He lied to you. He hurt you." Her eyes filled with regret. "But he was trying to fix what he had done." Sarah looked down at the letter. "Why didn't he tell me?" Victoria didn't answer. And that was answer enough. Something terrible had happened. Sarah remembered the night everything collapsed. Daniel coming home late. His strange behavior. The argument. The documents she found hidden in his office. The woman named Claire. The accusation that Sarah had married into the Vance family for money. The entire family turning against her. She remembered Daniel saying nothing. That was the part that hurt the most. Not the lies. The silence. "Where is Daniel now?" Sarah asked. Victoria's face changed. "He disappeared." Sarah froze. "What?" "Three weeks ago." "Why wasn't I told?" Victoria looked at her sadly. "Because my mother made sure nobody contacted you." A cold feeling moved through Sarah. "What happened to him?" "We don't know." The room became silent. Then Sarah laughed quietly. A broken, bitter sound. "You want me to believe that Daniel disappeared and your family just accepted it?" "No." Victoria looked directly at her. "My family helped make him disappear." Sarah felt a chill. "What are you saying?" Victoria walked to the bookshelf. She pulled out an old book. Behind it was a hidden compartment. Sarah stared. The Vance mansion had secrets everywhere. Victoria removed a small black device. "A recording." She handed it to Sarah. "Daniel left this for you." Sarah hesitated. "Why?" "Because he knew if anything happened to him, you would be the only person who could destroy my mother." Sarah looked at the device. Destroy Eleanor Vance. Those words sounded impossible. The Vance family was one of the most powerful families in the country. Their companies were everywhere. Their influence reached politicians, banks, and corporations. What could one recording possibly do? Victoria saw the doubt in her eyes. "You still don't understand." She stepped closer. "My mother didn't build this empire through success." Sarah looked at her. "Then how?" Victoria's voice became quieter. "Through secrets." A storm seemed to gather outside. Rain began hitting the windows. Victoria continued. "For thirty years, Eleanor has collected information on powerful people. Politicians. Business leaders. Judges." Sarah frowned. "Blackmail?" Victoria nodded. "She doesn't destroy people with money. She destroys them with fear." Sarah remembered Eleanor's words. Everything involving my family is my business. Now she understood. The mansion wasn't just a home. It was a fortress. A place built on control. "But why me?" Sarah asked. Victoria looked at her stomach. "Because your child is the reason my mother panicked." Sarah froze. "My baby?" Victoria nodded. "Daniel discovered something before he disappeared." "What?" Victoria took a deep breath. "Your baby isn't just Daniel's child." Sarah stared at her. "What are you talking about?" Victoria looked terrified. "The child is connected to the biggest secret in the Vance family." Sarah's heart began pounding. "What secret?" Before Victoria could answer, a loud sound came from the hallway. Footsteps. Someone was coming. Victoria's face turned pale. "No." Sarah immediately recognized that fear. "Who is it?" Victoria whispered: "My mother." The footsteps stopped outside the door. Eleanor's voice came through. "Victoria." A pause. "Open the door." Victoria looked at Sarah. The fear in her eyes was real. Not an act. "Hide the device." Sarah quickly placed the recorder inside her coat. Victoria opened the door. Eleanor stood outside. Perfectly calm. Almost peaceful. That was what made her terrifying. Her eyes moved from Victoria to Sarah. Then she smiled. "I see you two have been talking." Neither woman answered. Eleanor entered the room. "Sarah, I think it's time we stopped pretending." She walked closer. "You came here looking for answers." Sarah remained silent. Eleanor tilted her head. "But you have no idea what questions you should be asking." A cold smile appeared. "That is your biggest weakness." Sarah looked directly at her. "And what is yours?" For the first time, Eleanor's expression changed. Only for a second. Then she smiled again. "You think you are brave." She stepped closer. "But bravery is useless when you don't know who your enemies are." Sarah held her ground. "Maybe I know now." Eleanor looked at her stomach. Then whispered: "No, Sarah." "You have no idea." The lights suddenly flickered. The entire mansion went dark. A scream came from downstairs. Everyone froze. Then came the sound of something crashing. Victoria looked toward the hallway. Eleanor's calm expression disappeared. Because whatever had just happened… Even Eleanor Vance had not expected it. And somewhere inside the darkness of the mansion… Someone had returned. Someone who knew every secret the Vance family had buried. Including the truth about Sarah's unborn child. / Chapter 4 / 14

CHAPTER 5: THE WOMAN WHO RETURNED FROM THE GRAVE

CHAPTER 5: THE WOMAN WHO RETURNED FROM THE GRAVE

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Daniel held the phone against his ear, but he looked like he had forgotten how to speak.

The voice on the other end had changed everything.

Emily Collins.

The woman who should not exist.

The woman Sarah had never known.

Her sister.

Sarah stared at Daniel.

"Put it on speaker."

Daniel hesitated.

Sarah's eyes hardened.

"Now."

Slowly, Daniel pressed the button.

The woman's voice filled the room.

"Sarah?"

Hearing her own name from a stranger sent a strange feeling through her.

Not fear.

Something deeper.

A connection she couldn't explain.

"Who are you?" Sarah asked.

A long silence followed.

Then the woman answered.

"I'm the person who has been trying to find you for twelve years."

Sarah's fingers tightened.

"Twelve years?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

The voice trembled slightly.

"Because your father didn't die the way you were told."

The room became silent.

Sarah felt like the floor had disappeared.

Her father.

The one memory she had held onto since childhood.

The one person she believed had left her.

"No."

Her voice was barely audible.

"My father died in an accident."

Emily's voice became softer.

"That's what they wanted you to believe."

Sarah looked at Eleanor.

The older woman showed no emotion.

But Daniel noticed something.

A small movement.

A brief tightening of her hand.

Fear.

Again.

"You knew," Sarah whispered.

Eleanor didn't answer.

Sarah stepped closer.

"You knew about my father."

Eleanor remained silent.

That silence was confirmation.

Sarah's anger exploded.

"How long have you known?"

Daniel tried to stop her.

"Sarah..."

"No."

She looked at Eleanor.

"How long?"

Eleanor finally spoke.

"Since before you met Daniel."

The answer felt like a knife.

Sarah laughed softly.

A broken sound.

"So my entire life has been watched by your family?"

"No."

Eleanor replied.

"Not your entire life."

She looked at the phone.

"Only the important parts."

Sarah felt sick.

The Vance family had been studying her.

Following her.

Controlling information around her.

And she had walked into their mansion believing she was simply picking up some boxes.

Emily's voice interrupted.

"Sarah, you need to leave."

Daniel looked at the phone.

"Emily, where are you?"

"I can't tell you."

"Why?"

"Because if Eleanor knows where I am, I won't survive another night."

Everyone looked at Eleanor.

The matriarch didn't react.

But Sarah noticed.

Her calm was disappearing.

"Emily," Daniel said, "tell us everything."

A pause.

Then Emily spoke.

"Daniel, you need to understand something."

"What?"

"The Vance family is not the enemy you think it is."

Sarah frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Emily continued:

"Eleanor is dangerous. But she isn't the person who started all of this."

Daniel looked confused.

"Then who?"

The answer came quietly.

"Your father."

Everyone froze.

Daniel looked at Sarah.

"My father?"

Emily continued.

"Your father, Richard Vance, discovered the truth years ago."

Eleanor's expression changed.

For the first time, her mask completely disappeared.

"Don't."

Her voice was sharp.

Everyone turned toward her.

Emily heard her.

"You finally admit it."

Eleanor walked closer to the phone.

"Emily."

The way she said the name was different.

Not like an enemy.

Like someone seeing a ghost.

"You should have stayed hidden."

Sarah looked between them.

"You know her."

Eleanor said nothing.

Emily answered.

"Yes, Sarah."

A pause.

"Because Eleanor Vance is the reason I disappeared."

The room went silent.

Victoria looked at her mother in disbelief.

"Mom..."

Eleanor turned away.

"Everyone leaves this room."

Nobody moved.

Victoria shook her head.

"No."

Her voice surprised everyone.

"I'm tired."

She looked at Eleanor.

"I'm tired of secrets."

Daniel looked at his sister.

Victoria continued:

"I spent my whole life protecting this family."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"But I don't even know what family means anymore."

Sarah watched her.

For the first time, Victoria didn't look like a Vance.

She looked like someone trapped.

Emily spoke again.

"Sarah, listen carefully."

"I'm listening."

"Your father and Richard Vance discovered something about Eleanor's empire."

Sarah looked at Eleanor.

"What?"

"A hidden organization."

Daniel frowned.

"What organization?"

Emily answered:

"One that controls the Vance family from above."

Nobody spoke.

Sarah felt a chill.

"Above Eleanor?"

"Yes."

Emily continued.

"Eleanor believes she is the queen."

A pause.

"But she is only a piece on the board."

Daniel looked toward his mother.

"You knew?"

Eleanor remained silent.

And that silence was terrifying.

Because for once...

Eleanor Vance had no answer.

Suddenly, a loud crash came from outside.

Everyone turned.

The mansion security alarm started screaming.

Red lights flashed through the hallways.

A servant ran inside.

"Mrs. Vance!"

"What happened?"

"The main gate has been breached."

Eleanor's face changed.

"By who?"

The servant looked terrified.

"There are vehicles approaching."

"How many?"

The servant swallowed.

"Too many."

Daniel moved toward the window.

Outside, through the heavy rain, headlights appeared.

One vehicle.

Then another.

Then dozens.

Black cars surrounded the mansion.

Sarah felt her heart race.

"Who are they?"

Nobody answered.

Because Eleanor knew.

And for the first time, she looked powerless.

The front doors suddenly opened.

A group of armed men entered.

But they weren't attacking.

They were waiting.

Waiting for someone.

Then a man walked through the entrance.

Older.

Elegant.

Calm.

A man Sarah had never seen before.

But Eleanor recognized him immediately.

Her face turned pale.

"Impossible."

The man smiled.

"Hello, Eleanor."

He looked around the mansion.

"Did you really think you could bury the past forever?"

Daniel stepped forward.

"Who are you?"

The man looked at him.

Then at Sarah.

His eyes stopped on her stomach.

And he smiled.

"So this is the child."

Sarah felt a cold wave move through her body.

"What child?"

The man looked at Eleanor.

"You never told them, did you?"

Nobody moved.

The man continued:

"The baby Sarah is carrying..."

He paused.

"...is the last thing standing between us and complete control of the Vance empire."

Sarah instinctively stepped back.

Daniel moved in front of her.

The stranger smiled.

"Protective, just like your father."

Daniel froze.

"My father?"

The man nodded.

"Yes."

He looked directly at Sarah.

"Because your child carries a secret that can destroy everyone in this room."

Thunder exploded outside.

The mansion went silent.

And Sarah realized something terrifying.

The Vance family had not been trying to destroy her.

They had been trying to control what was inside her.

May you like

Her baby.

The last piece of a secret war that began before she was even born.
