# CHAPTER 2: THE SECRET BEHIND THE WALLS Sarah stood frozen in the middle of the guest room. The voice outside the door had disappeared. But the fear it left behind remained. She stared at the locked door, gripping Daniel's letter so tightly that the paper began to wrinkle in her hand. Her mind was racing. Who had locked her inside? And more importantly… Who was the person standing outside? The voice had sounded familiar. Too familiar. She searched through every memory she had of the Vance family. Daniel. Eleanor. Daniel's younger brother Adrian. His sister Victoria. Even the servants who had worked there for years. Everyone had a reason to hate her. Everyone had something to hide. A soft sound interrupted her thoughts. A key turning. Sarah stepped back. The door opened slowly. A figure entered. Sarah's heart stopped. "Victoria?" Daniel's younger sister closed the door behind her. Victoria Vance looked different from the last time Sarah saw her. The confident smile was gone. The perfect designer clothes were replaced by a simple dark sweater. For the first time, she didn't look like a Vance. She looked afraid. Sarah immediately became defensive. "What are you doing here?" Victoria looked at the letter in Sarah's hand. Then at her stomach. Then back at Sarah. "You found it." Sarah tightened her grip. "Found what?" Victoria swallowed. "The truth." The answer made Sarah's anger rise. "You expect me to believe you after locking me in this room?" Victoria looked away. "I didn't lock you in." "Someone did." "I know." "Then tell me who." Victoria remained silent. That silence told Sarah everything. "You know." Victoria closed her eyes. "Yes." Sarah felt her chest tighten. "Who?" Victoria hesitated. Then whispered: "My mother." The words landed like a stone. Sarah stared at her. "Eleanor?" Victoria nodded. "She knows you came here. She knew you would find Daniel's letter eventually." "Why?" Victoria looked toward the walls. Because even inside the room, she seemed afraid someone could hear. "Because Daniel was trying to expose her." Sarah felt the air leave her lungs. "Expose her for what?" Victoria walked closer. "Before I tell you anything, you need to understand something." She lowered her voice. "My brother wasn't the person you thought he was." Sarah's expression hardened. "You're defending him?" "No." Victoria's answer came immediately. "I am warning you." Sarah looked confused. Victoria continued. "Daniel made mistakes. Big ones. He lied to you. He hurt you." Her eyes filled with regret. "But he was trying to fix what he had done." Sarah looked down at the letter. "Why didn't he tell me?" Victoria didn't answer. And that was answer enough. Something terrible had happened. Sarah remembered the night everything collapsed. Daniel coming home late. His strange behavior. The argument. The documents she found hidden in his office. The woman named Claire. The accusation that Sarah had married into the Vance family for money. The entire family turning against her. She remembered Daniel saying nothing. That was the part that hurt the most. Not the lies. The silence. "Where is Daniel now?" Sarah asked. Victoria's face changed. "He disappeared." Sarah froze. "What?" "Three weeks ago." "Why wasn't I told?" Victoria looked at her sadly. "Because my mother made sure nobody contacted you." A cold feeling moved through Sarah. "What happened to him?" "We don't know." The room became silent. Then Sarah laughed quietly. A broken, bitter sound. "You want me to believe that Daniel disappeared and your family just accepted it?" "No." Victoria looked directly at her. "My family helped make him disappear." Sarah felt a chill. "What are you saying?" Victoria walked to the bookshelf. She pulled out an old book. Behind it was a hidden compartment. Sarah stared. The Vance mansion had secrets everywhere. Victoria removed a small black device. "A recording." She handed it to Sarah. "Daniel left this for you." Sarah hesitated. "Why?" "Because he knew if anything happened to him, you would be the only person who could destroy my mother." Sarah looked at the device. Destroy Eleanor Vance. Those words sounded impossible. The Vance family was one of the most powerful families in the country. Their companies were everywhere. Their influence reached politicians, banks, and corporations. What could one recording possibly do? Victoria saw the doubt in her eyes. "You still don't understand." She stepped closer. "My mother didn't build this empire through success." Sarah looked at her. "Then how?" Victoria's voice became quieter. "Through secrets." A storm seemed to gather outside. Rain began hitting the windows. Victoria continued. "For thirty years, Eleanor has collected information on powerful people. Politicians. Business leaders. Judges." Sarah frowned. "Blackmail?" Victoria nodded. "She doesn't destroy people with money. She destroys them with fear." Sarah remembered Eleanor's words. Everything involving my family is my business. Now she understood. The mansion wasn't just a home. It was a fortress. A place built on control. "But why me?" Sarah asked. Victoria looked at her stomach. "Because your child is the reason my mother panicked." Sarah froze. "My baby?" Victoria nodded. "Daniel discovered something before he disappeared." "What?" Victoria took a deep breath. "Your baby isn't just Daniel's child." Sarah stared at her. "What are you talking about?" Victoria looked terrified. "The child is connected to the biggest secret in the Vance family." Sarah's heart began pounding. "What secret?" Before Victoria could answer, a loud sound came from the hallway. Footsteps. Someone was coming. Victoria's face turned pale. "No." Sarah immediately recognized that fear. "Who is it?" Victoria whispered: "My mother." The footsteps stopped outside the door. Eleanor's voice came through. "Victoria." A pause. "Open the door." Victoria looked at Sarah. The fear in her eyes was real. Not an act. "Hide the device." Sarah quickly placed the recorder inside her coat. Victoria opened the door. Eleanor stood outside. Perfectly calm. Almost peaceful. That was what made her terrifying. Her eyes moved from Victoria to Sarah. Then she smiled. "I see you two have been talking." Neither woman answered. Eleanor entered the room. "Sarah, I think it's time we stopped pretending." She walked closer. "You came here looking for answers." Sarah remained silent. Eleanor tilted her head. "But you have no idea what questions you should be asking." A cold smile appeared. "That is your biggest weakness." Sarah looked directly at her. "And what is yours?" For the first time, Eleanor's expression changed. Only for a second. Then she smiled again. "You think you are brave." She stepped closer. "But bravery is useless when you don't know who your enemies are." Sarah held her ground. "Maybe I know now." Eleanor looked at her stomach. Then whispered: "No, Sarah." "You have no idea." The lights suddenly flickered. The entire mansion went dark. A scream came from downstairs. Everyone froze. Then came the sound of something crashing. Victoria looked toward the hallway. Eleanor's calm expression disappeared. Because whatever had just happened… Even Eleanor Vance had not expected it. And somewhere inside the darkness of the mansion… Someone had returned. Someone who knew every secret the Vance family had buried. Including the truth about Sarah's unborn child. / Chapter 5 / 14

CHAPTER 6: THE BLOODLINE SECRET

CHAPTER 6: THE BLOODLINE SECRET

The words echoed through the mansion.

"The child carries a secret."

Nobody moved.

Not even Eleanor.

For the first time, Sarah saw something she never thought she would see.

The powerful matriarch of the Vance family looked uncertain.

Not angry.

Not calculating.

Uncertain.

And that terrified Sarah.

Because if Eleanor Vance did not know what to do…

Then the situation was far more dangerous than Sarah imagined.

Daniel stood in front of Sarah, blocking the stranger's view.

"Who are you?"

The man smiled.

A calm, almost friendly smile.

But Sarah immediately recognized something in his eyes.

The same cold calculation she had seen in Eleanor.

"My name is Marcus Vale."

Daniel's expression changed.

"Vale?"

Victoria whispered:

"No..."

Everyone turned toward her.

Sarah noticed the fear in Victoria's face.

"You know him?"

Victoria nodded slowly.

"Everyone in the Vance family knows that name."

Marcus smiled.

"Good. At least someone remembers history."

Daniel looked at his sister.

"Explain."

Victoria looked at Eleanor.

But Eleanor remained silent.

Victoria swallowed.

"The Vale family used to be partners with the Vances."

"Used to be?"

Marcus laughed softly.

"That is a polite way to describe betrayal."

Sarah looked at him.

"What do you want?"

Marcus turned his attention to her.

That alone made Daniel tense.

"I want what was taken from my family."

Sarah frowned.

"What does that have to do with me?"

Marcus walked closer.

"Everything."

Daniel stepped forward.

"Don't go near her."

Marcus stopped.

"Interesting."

He looked at Daniel.

"After all these years, you finally choose something other than your family's approval."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"What are you talking about?"

Marcus smiled.

"Your father knew."

A strange silence filled the room.

"Your father knew about the child before he died."

Sarah felt her heart stop.

Daniel looked confused.

"What child?"

Marcus looked at Sarah.

"The child your father spent years protecting."

Sarah shook her head.

"No."

She looked at Daniel.

"This makes no sense."

Marcus continued.

"Your father, Richard Vance, discovered that the Vance bloodline carried a secret."

Daniel stared.

"What secret?"

Marcus's expression became serious.

"A legal trust."

Everyone looked confused.

"A trust?"

Marcus nodded.

"Created decades ago by the founders of the Vance empire."

Sarah frowned.

"And?"

"And whoever inherits that trust controls the future of the entire Vance corporation."

Daniel looked at Eleanor.

"Why didn't I know about this?"

Eleanor finally spoke.

"Because it was hidden."

Marcus laughed.

"Not hidden."

He looked at Eleanor.

"Stolen."

The accusation hung in the air.

Sarah watched Eleanor carefully.

The older woman did not deny it.

Again.

That was becoming a pattern.

"Where is this trust?" Daniel asked.

Marcus looked at Sarah.

"With her."

Sarah froze.

"What?"

Daniel immediately turned.

"No."

Marcus nodded.

"Yes."

He pointed at her.

"Your unborn child is connected to the original Vance bloodline."

Sarah felt dizzy.

"That's impossible."

Marcus shook his head.

"Your father knew it was possible."

"My father wasn't a Vance."

"Your biological father wasn't."

The room became silent.

Sarah's breathing stopped.

"What?"

Marcus continued.

"Your mother never told you the truth."

Sarah felt like the world was breaking apart.

"My mother?"

"She knew."

"No."

Sarah shook her head.

"She would have told me."

Marcus looked at her sadly.

"Would she?"

The question hurt more than the answer.

Sarah remembered her childhood.

The unanswered questions.

The strange way her mother avoided talking about her father.

The old photographs that disappeared.

The stories that never made sense.

Daniel looked at Marcus.

"How do you know all this?"

Marcus smiled.

"Because I was there."

"Where?"

"The night your father died."

Sarah's face went pale.

Daniel stepped forward.

"You were involved?"

Marcus didn't answer immediately.

Then he said:

"I was the person who tried to save him."

Nobody spoke.

Sarah stared.

"Then who killed him?"

Marcus looked toward Eleanor.

The room froze.

Eleanor's expression finally cracked.

"Don't."

Marcus ignored her.

"Your father was going to reveal the truth."

Daniel looked at his mother.

"Mom..."

Marcus continued.

"He discovered that someone inside the Vance family had been manipulating everything."

Sarah whispered:

"Who?"

Marcus looked at Eleanor.

Then at Daniel.

Then at Victoria.

"The person who betrayed Richard Vance..."

A pause.

"...was his own son."

Daniel froze.

The entire room went silent.

Sarah looked at him.

"No."

Marcus's eyes remained cold.

"Your father died because someone he trusted sold him out."

Daniel stepped back.

"You're lying."

Marcus shrugged.

"Maybe."

He looked around.

"But ask yourself something."

"Why did Eleanor spend years protecting you?"

Daniel said nothing.

"Why did she erase evidence?"

Silence.

"Why did she allow Sarah to suffer instead of telling her the truth?"

Sarah looked at Daniel.

A terrible thought entered her mind.

"Daniel..."

He looked at her.

"I don't know."

But the uncertainty in his voice scared her.

Because Sarah had spent months believing Daniel was the only person who had ever truly loved her.

What if even that was another lie?

Suddenly, a gunshot exploded.

Everyone turned.

A guard near Marcus collapsed.

Chaos erupted.

People shouted.

Security rushed forward.

Daniel grabbed Sarah.

"Move!"

They ran toward the side hallway.

Victoria followed.

Behind them, Eleanor shouted orders.

Marcus disappeared into the crowd.

Sarah's heart pounded.

Another attack.

Another secret.

Another person trying to control her fate.

They reached a hidden room behind the library.

Daniel locked the door.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Sarah turned toward him.

"Tell me the truth."

Daniel looked at her.

"Sarah..."

"No."

Her eyes filled with pain.

"Every person in this mansion has lied to me."

She pointed at him.

"I need to know if you are one of them."

Daniel looked devastated.

"I never wanted to hurt you."

"That isn't an answer."

He closed his eyes.

Then slowly said:

"Before we met..."

Sarah waited.

Daniel whispered:

"I was working with my father."

"Doing what?"

"Investigating my mother's empire."

Sarah frowned.

"Then why would Marcus say you betrayed him?"

Daniel looked away.

"Because I did something terrible."

The room became silent.

Sarah's heart sank.

"What did you do?"

Daniel looked at her.

And for the first time...

She saw real guilt.

"I gave Eleanor information."

Sarah stepped back.

"What information?"

Daniel's voice broke.

"The location of my father's final evidence."

Sarah stared.

"And because of that?"

Daniel nodded.

"Because of that..."

A tear appeared in his eyes.

"My father disappeared."

Sarah felt numb.

The man she loved.

The man she believed was protecting her.

Had been connected to the reason this nightmare began.

Before she could speak, a sound came from behind the wall.

A hidden door slowly opened.

Everyone turned.

Inside the secret passage stood a woman.

Older.

Weak.

But alive.

Sarah stopped breathing.

Because she recognized her.

The woman from the old photographs.

The woman everyone said was dead.

Her mother.

"Sarah..."

The woman's voice trembled.

"I am sorry."

Sarah couldn't move.

Her entire life had been built on lies.

And now the person who created the first lie had returned.

Her mother stepped into the room.

"I should have told you the truth."

Sarah stared at her.

"Why did you hide who my father was?"

Her mother's eyes filled with tears.

"Because your father wasn't the only person Eleanor Vance destroyed."

She looked toward Daniel.

"She destroyed everyone who knew the secret."

Then she looked at Sarah's stomach.

"And now she wants your child."

A long silence followed.

May you like

Then her mother whispered the words that changed everything.

"Because your baby is the legal heir to the Vance empire."
