Chapter 9: The Queen Behind the Game

The mansion fell silent after Elena’s voice disappeared.

Not normal silence.

Not the peaceful silence of a sleeping house.

This was the silence before something broke.

Dominic stood in the underground chamber, staring at the dead monitor.

His mother’s voice was gone.

But the damage remained.

Because Elena had done something far more dangerous than attack him.

She had reminded him that he still did not know the truth.

And Dominic Vale hated one thing more than betrayal.

Being controlled.

“Find her.”

Those were the first words Dominic spoke.

Marcus immediately reached for his radio.

“Boss, we’re already searching.”

“No.”

Dominic looked at him.

“Not searching.”

A pause.

“Hunting.”

Marcus nodded.

He understood the difference.

Searching meant looking for someone.

Hunting meant preparing for what happened when they were found.

Within minutes, the mansion became a fortress.

Every camera was checked.

Every entrance was examined.

Every employee was questioned.

But Elena was gone.

Again.

Like a ghost.

Like she had never existed.

Dominic returned to the hallway where she had appeared.

He touched the wall beside the security panel.

A hidden mechanism.

A secret passage.

Another secret inside his own home.

He laughed quietly.

The sound carried no humor.

“My family built a maze.”

Marcus stood behind him.

“And you’re going to find the exit.”

Dominic looked at the wall.

“No.”

His voice became colder.

“I’m going to find who built it.”

Upstairs, Harper sat beside Mia.

The little girl was quiet.

Too quiet.

Dominic noticed immediately.

Children did not become silent without a reason.

He entered the room.

Harper looked up.

“Mr. Dominic.”

He sat beside her.

“Are you okay?”

She nodded.

But her eyes said otherwise.

“You heard everything?”

Another nod.

Dominic looked down.

“I’m sorry.”

Harper tilted her head.

“For what?”

“For all the secrets.”

She looked confused.

“Adults always have secrets.”

Dominic looked at her.

“You’re right.”

A small pause.

“But some secrets hurt people.”

Harper hugged her rabbit.

“Is Daddy bad?”

The question surprised him.

Dominic looked toward Daniel.

The man stood near the doorway.

Waiting.

The answer mattered.

Not only to Harper.

To everyone.

“No.”

Dominic finally said.

“Your father is not bad.”

Harper looked relieved.

“But he made mistakes.”

Daniel lowered his head.

Harper looked at Dominic.

“Did you make mistakes too?”

The question was innocent.

But it struck harder than any accusation.

Dominic thought about Mia.

The cellar.

The lies.

The people he trusted.

“Yes.”

He answered honestly.

“I did.”

Harper considered that.

Then she said:

“Then maybe people can fix them.”

Dominic looked at the child.

Four years old.

And somehow wiser than most adults he knew.

Later that night, Dominic met Daniel privately.

No guards.

No weapons.

Just two men connected by a complicated history.

“You knew Elena was alive.”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Three years.”

Dominic looked at him.

“Three years.”

Daniel accepted the anger.

“Yes.”

“You watched her operate.”

“Yes.”

“You watched Nathan.”

“Yes.”

“And you watched me.”

Daniel looked down.

“Yes.”

Dominic walked toward the window.

“Why?”

Daniel answered quietly.

“Because your father asked me.”

Dominic turned.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

“He knew Elena was involved?”

“Yes.”

The answer was another wound.

“How much did he know?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Enough.”

Dominic stared.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

He stepped closer.

“Enough.”

A pause.

“But nobody tells me everything.”

Daniel looked tired.

“Because the full truth destroys people.”

Dominic’s expression hardened.

“No.”

He shook his head.

“Lies destroy people.”

Daniel had no response.

Because he knew Dominic was right.

The next morning, Dominic received an unexpected visitor.

Victor Bennett.

Claire’s father.

The man responsible for raising the woman who betrayed him.

Victor entered the mansion without fear.

That alone irritated Dominic.

Most people lowered their eyes when entering his home.

Victor did not.

He looked around.

Almost admiring.

“Beautiful place.”

Dominic sat behind his desk.

“You have five minutes.”

Victor smiled.

“You sound like your father.”

“I’m nothing like him.”

Victor laughed softly.

“You believe that.”

Dominic said nothing.

Victor placed a folder on the desk.

“I came to make a deal.”

Dominic opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

Bank records.

Photographs.

Names.

“What is this?”

“Proof.”

“Of what?”

“That Nathan has been using you.”

Dominic looked up.

“I already know.”

Victor nodded.

“But you don’t know everything.”

Those words again.

Dominic hated them.

“What do you know?”

Victor sat down.

“Your father created a secret trust.”

Dominic’s eyes narrowed.

“For Harper.”

“Yes.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means if anything happened to your father, your sister, or her child…”

Victor paused.

“The Vale fortune would legally transfer.”

Dominic understood.

“Not to me.”

“No.”

“To Harper.”

Victor nodded.

“And that is why she had to disappear.”

Dominic looked at him.

“You helped them.”

Victor did not deny it.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I was paid.”

The honesty surprised him.

“By who?”

Victor looked directly at him.

“Elena.”

Dominic’s face remained emotionless.

“How much?”

“Enough.”

Another pause.

“But money was not the only reason.”

“What was?”

Victor looked uncomfortable for the first time.

“Fear.”

“Of Elena?”

Victor nodded.

“You don’t understand that woman.”

Dominic leaned forward.

“She’s my mother.”

Victor’s expression became serious.

“Exactly.”

Silence.

Victor continued:

“She knows how to make people believe they are choosing.”

Dominic listened.

“She never orders.”

A pause.

“She creates situations where people think they have no choice.”

That sounded familiar.

Nathan.

Claire.

Daniel.

Everyone.

“Where is she now?”

Victor looked away.

“I don’t know.”

Dominic knew he was lying.

“You do.”

Victor remained silent.

Dominic leaned back.

“Five minutes are over.”

Victor stood.

Before leaving, he stopped.

“There is something else.”

Dominic looked at him.

“What?”

Victor hesitated.

Then:

“Claire did not betray you because she wanted power.”

Dominic’s expression changed slightly.

“Then why?”

Victor looked at him.

“Because Elena threatened her.”

A pause.

“She threatened to kill someone Claire loved.”

Dominic stared.

“Who?”

Victor opened the door.

And answered:

“Her mother.”

That night, Claire was brought back to the mansion.

Not as a prisoner.

Not yet.

Dominic wanted answers.

She entered the room looking different.

No perfect smile.

No confident posture.

Just exhaustion.

Dominic stood across from her.

“Your father talked.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“I knew he would.”

“Did Elena threaten your family?”

Claire said nothing.

“Claire.”

A tear appeared.

“Yes.”

The answer was quiet.

Dominic watched her.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

She laughed bitterly.

“Because you wouldn’t have believed me.”

“Try.”

Claire looked at him.

“She knew everything about everyone.”

A pause.

“She knew where my mother lived.”

Dominic said nothing.

“She knew my father’s crimes.”

Another pause.

“She knew exactly what to threaten.”

Claire looked down.

“I was supposed to get close to you.”

“For Nathan.”

“Yes.”

“And then?”

Claire’s voice cracked.

“Then Harper was supposed to disappear.”

The room became still.

Dominic’s eyes turned cold.

“But she didn’t.”

“No.”

“Because Mia protected her.”

“Yes.”

“And you helped lock Mia away.”

Claire looked away.

“Yes.”

For the first time, Dominic saw something unexpected.

Not an excuse.

Not manipulation.

Regret.

Real regret.

“I thought I could fix it later.”

Dominic stared.

“You thought you could fix kidnapping?”

Claire began crying.

“No.”

She whispered.

“I thought I could stop Elena before she went too far.”

Dominic’s expression did not change.

“You underestimated her.”

Claire nodded.

“Yes.”

A long silence.

Then Dominic asked:

“Where is Elena?”

Claire looked at him.

“I don’t know.”

Dominic waited.

Claire hesitated.

Then whispered:

“But I know where she’s going.”

“Where?”

Claire looked toward the window.

“To the place where this all started.”

Dominic narrowed his eyes.

“Where?”

Claire answered:

“The old Vale estate.”

The place where his grandfather built the empire.

The place abandoned fifteen years ago.

The place nobody had entered since his father disappeared.

Dominic stood.

Because he finally understood.

The war had never been happening inside his mansion.

The mansion was only the battlefield.

The real beginning was somewhere else.

A place holding every secret.

Every betrayal.

Every death.

May you like

The old Vale estate.

And Elena Vale was waiting there.
