Chapter 7: The Secret Hidden in a Child’s Name

The rain continued falling over the private airport.

Heavy drops struck the ground like thousands of tiny warnings.

Dominic Vale stood completely still.

For years, he had trained himself to recognize danger.

A weapon hidden beneath a jacket.

A hand moving too quickly.

A person avoiding eye contact.

A lie disguised as loyalty.

But this…

This was different.

Because the person Daniel accused was not an enemy.

Not a rival.

Not a traitor wearing an expensive suit.

It was a four-year-old girl who had spent three days crying beneath his mansion because nobody believed her.

Harper Carter.

The child who had found Mia.

The child who had exposed Claire.

The child who had held onto Dominic’s coat sleeve and asked for help.

And now Daniel was telling him she was connected to everything.

“Say that again.”

Dominic’s voice was quiet.

Too quiet.

Daniel looked at him.

“I know what you’re thinking.”

“No.”

Dominic stepped closer.

“You don’t.”

The guards around them remained silent.

Nobody moved.

Because everyone understood one thing.

Dominic Vale could forgive many things.

But involving a child was something else.

“Explain.”

Daniel looked down.

“Harper’s real name is not Harper Carter.”

The rain continued.

“What is it?”

Daniel swallowed.

“Harper Vale.”

The world seemed to stop.

Dominic stared at him.

“No.”

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

“That’s impossible.”

“I wish it was.”

Dominic’s eyes became colder.

“You’re telling me that the maid’s daughter is a Vale?”

Daniel looked at him.

“Not just a Vale.”

A pause.

“She is Alessandro’s granddaughter.”

For several seconds, Dominic said nothing.

His mind refused to accept the information.

His father had been hidden.

His mother had lied.

Nathan had betrayed him.

His entire family history had been rewritten.

But this?

A child.

A child carrying the Vale bloodline.

“How?”

Daniel looked toward the airplane.

“Because fifteen years ago, your father discovered something.”

“What?”

“He discovered your uncle’s plan.”

Dominic’s expression hardened.

“The same plan that caused him to disappear?”

“Yes.”

Daniel continued.

“But your father had one final secret.”

“What secret?”

“He had another child.”

Dominic froze.

“No.”

Daniel nodded.

“Your younger sister.”

The words hit harder.

“My father had a daughter?”

“Yes.”

“And nobody knew?”

“Almost nobody.”

Dominic looked away.

His entire life, he believed he was the last remaining direct heir of the Vale family.

The one person carrying the responsibility.

The one person protecting the legacy.

But there had been another.

A daughter.

A hidden branch of the family.

“Where is she?”

Daniel’s face became serious.

“She died.”

Dominic stared.

“What?”

“She died years ago.”

“Then Harper?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Her daughter.”

The silence was unbearable.

Dominic remembered Harper’s face.

Her small hands.

Her fear.

Her voice.

Mommy always says goodbye.

She was not a weapon.

She was not a secret.

She was a child who lost her mother.

“So why hide her?”

Daniel answered:

“Because Lucian wanted her.”

Dominic’s eyes sharpened.

“Why?”

“Because Harper is the last person who can legally inherit a part of the Vale family assets.”

Dominic understood.

Money.

Power.

Inheritance.

The same poison that destroyed his family.

“Where does Mia fit into this?”

Daniel looked down.

“Mia was not just a maid.”

Dominic frowned.

“She was your sister’s closest friend.”

The memories returned.

Mia’s quiet personality.

Her loyalty.

The way she always protected Harper.

The way she avoided talking about her past.

“She knew?”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“Enough to know Harper’s identity had to stay hidden.”

Dominic looked at the airport.

“So Mia spent three years inside my house protecting a child who belonged to my family.”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

“And nobody told me.”

Daniel looked away.

“Your father ordered it.”

Dominic’s jaw tightened.

“My father.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because he believed you were too focused on revenge.”

Dominic laughed coldly.

“Was he wrong?”

Daniel did not answer.

That was enough.

The drive back to the mansion was silent.

Dominic sat in the back seat.

The city lights passed by the window.

Every building.

Every street.

Every memory.

Everything felt different.

Because the foundation of his life had shifted.

When he arrived, he did not go to his office.

He went directly upstairs.

To Mia’s room.

She was awake.

Harper was sleeping beside her.

The little girl held her mother’s hand.

Dominic stood at the doorway.

Mia looked at him.

“You found something.”

It was not a question.

Dominic entered.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Mia became still.

“What?”

“About Harper.”

The color disappeared from her face.

Dominic noticed.

That reaction was all the confirmation he needed.

“You knew.”

Mia looked at Harper.

Then back at him.

“Yes.”

The answer hurt.

Not because she lied.

Because he understood why.

“How long?”

“Since she was born.”

Dominic looked at the sleeping child.

“Tell me everything.”

Mia sat up slowly.

“Your father came to me fifteen years ago.”

Dominic listened.

“He told me there was someone trying to destroy the Vale family.”

“Lucian.”

“Yes.”

“He told me his daughter was in danger.”

Dominic looked at her.

“My sister.”

Mia nodded.

“She was pregnant.”

The room became quiet.

“She gave birth to Harper.”

Dominic looked at the child.

A little girl who had unknowingly carried the weight of an entire family war.

“What happened to my sister?”

Mia looked down.

“She was killed.”

Dominic closed his eyes.

“When?”

“Three years after Harper was born.”

“How?”

Mia’s voice became soft.

“An accident.”

Dominic immediately looked at her.

“Was it?”

Mia did not answer.

He understood.

No.

It was not.

“What about Harper’s father?”

Mia hesitated.

“He disappeared.”

“Who was he?”

Mia looked toward the door.

Then whispered:

“Someone from the Vale family.”

Dominic frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Before Mia could answer, the mansion alarm suddenly activated.

The sound echoed through every hallway.

Red lights flashed.

The guards rushed into position.

Dominic immediately stood.

“What happened?”

A guard’s voice came through the radio.

“Boss, we have an intruder.”

“Where?”

The answer came.

“Harper’s room.”

Dominic froze.

He moved instantly.

Not toward his office.

Not toward his weapons.

Toward the child.

When Dominic reached the room, two guards were already there.

The door was open.

The window was broken.

Cold air entered the room.

Harper was still asleep.

But someone had been inside.

On the pillow beside her was a small envelope.

Dominic picked it up.

No name.

No signature.

Only one sentence written on the front.

For the true heir of the Vale family.

His fingers tightened.

He opened it.

Inside was an old photograph.

A baby.

A woman.

And a man.

Dominic looked at the man.

His heart stopped.

Because he recognized him.

The man holding baby Harper was not a stranger.

It was someone he knew.

Someone still alive.

Someone who had stood beside him for years.

On the back of the photograph was a message:

Ask your father who Harper’s father really is.

Dominic slowly lowered the picture.

The room became silent.

Then Harper opened her eyes.

“Mr. Dominic?”

He looked at her.

For the first time, he did not see a victim.

He saw a mystery.

A mystery connected to his blood.

A mystery someone was willing to kill for.

And somewhere inside the mansion…

The person who knew the truth was watching.

Waiting.

May you like

Because the next secret was not about who Harper was.

It was about who her father had been.
