Chapter 6: The Enemy Wearing a Family Name

The photograph remained on the security monitor.
Dominic did not blink.
He could not.
Because some images were too powerful to be processed by the mind.
They had to be felt first.
The photograph showed four people.
Nathan Cross.
Victor Bennett.
Elena Vale.
And the man Dominic had spent half his life believing was buried.
His uncle.
Lucian Vale.
The man who was supposed to have died fifteen years ago.
The man whose name had disappeared from every family document.
The man his father had warned him about.
Dominic stared at the screen.
His hands were completely still.
That frightened Marcus more than anger would have.
Because Dominic Vale’s rage was famous.
When Dominic became angry, people ran.
When Dominic became silent, people disappeared.
“Boss…”
Marcus tried to sit up.
Dominic finally looked at him.
“Who attacked the security room?”
Marcus shook his head.
“I don’t know.”
“You saw them?”
“No.”
“Then how did they get inside?”
Marcus looked embarrassed.
“They used authorized access.”
Dominic understood immediately.
Someone with permission.
Someone who belonged.
Again.
The same answer.
The enemy was never outside.
The enemy had keys.
Within ten minutes, the entire mansion was locked down.
No employees left.
No vehicles moved.
No phone calls went unanswered.
Dominic gathered everyone in the main hall.
Servants.
Security staff.
Executives.
Everyone who worked inside the Vale estate.
They stood silently.
Afraid.
Because they knew something had changed.
Dominic walked to the center of the room.
“Three days ago, a woman who worked in this house was kidnapped.”
Nobody spoke.
“She was taken inside this property.”
His eyes moved across the crowd.
“Someone here helped.”
The servants looked at each other nervously.
Dominic continued.
“Some of you are scared.”
A pause.
“Some of you know more than you said.”
The room became colder.
“I don’t care who you are.”
His voice lowered.
“You could have worked here for twenty years.”
“You could have eaten at my table.”
“You could have called yourself family.”
He looked toward the security cameras.
“If you betrayed this house…”
A pause.
“I will find you.”
Nobody doubted him.
Later that evening, Dominic entered the medical room.
Mia was awake.
Harper sat beside her, drawing on a piece of paper.
When Dominic entered, the little girl looked up.
“Mr. Dominic.”
He walked over.
“What are you drawing?”
Harper turned the paper.
It was a picture of the mansion.
A large house.
Three people standing outside.
Mia.
Harper.
Dominic.
He stared at it.
“You drew me?”
Harper nodded.
“You saved Mommy.”
Dominic looked away.
The words were simple.
But they carried weight.
“I should have saved her sooner.”
Harper tilted her head.
“You didn’t know.”
Dominic looked at her.
“You knew.”
The girl became quiet.
“You knew something was wrong.”
She nodded.
“Everyone said I was scared.”
A pause.
“But I wasn’t.”
Dominic crouched down.
“Then what were you?”
Harper looked toward her mother.
“I was listening.”
That answer stayed with him.
Because everyone around him had ignored the smallest person in the mansion.
Everyone except the child.
Mia reached out.
“Dominic.”
He stood.
“What did you find?”
Dominic hesitated.
Mia immediately noticed.
“It’s worse.”
“Yes.”
She closed her eyes.
“What is it?”
Dominic looked at Harper.
Then back at Mia.
“My family.”
Mia understood.
“The old records?”
“Yes.”
“The hidden room?”
“Yes.”
“And?”
Dominic was silent.
Finally:
“My father is alive.”
Mia froze.
For a moment, even she had no response.
Then:
“Your father?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“I don’t know.”
Dominic looked toward the window.
“But someone wanted me to believe he was dead.”
Mia whispered:
“Who?”
Dominic answered:
“Everyone.”
At midnight, Dominic went to the old family archive room.
A place nobody entered anymore.
The walls were covered with portraits.
Generations of Vale family members.
Men who built power.
Men who destroyed others.
Men who believed the family name mattered more than anything.
Dominic stood before his grandfather’s portrait.
Alfred Vale.
The founder of the modern Vale empire.
A respected businessman.
A respected philanthropist.
A respected monster.
Dominic had always admired him.
Now he wondered if admiration had simply been another lie.
He searched through old documents.
Property records.
Company agreements.
Family letters.
Then he found something.
A small envelope hidden behind a loose piece of wood.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
The handwriting was familiar.
His father’s.
Dominic unfolded it.
The letter was dated fifteen years earlier.
Dominic,
If you are reading this, then everything has failed.
I wanted you to grow up believing our family was stronger than its enemies.
I was wrong.
The greatest danger to the Vale family was never outside our walls.
It was the people who believed they deserved what belonged to us.
Trust carefully.
Especially those who tell you they are protecting you.
There is one person you must never believe.
Not Nathan.
Not Victor.
Not even Elena.
The person behind everything is someone you have never suspected.
Someone who has been beside you since childhood.
The letter ended there.
No name.
No explanation.
Just a warning.
Dominic read the final sentence again.
Someone who has been beside you since childhood.
His mind moved through every person he knew.
Every person who had been around him.
Every person who had access.
Then one name appeared.
Someone impossible.
Someone he never considered.
Someone who had always been loyal.
His oldest security commander.
Daniel.
Dominic immediately called Marcus.
“Find Daniel.”
A pause.
“Boss?”
“Now.”
Marcus understood the urgency.
“On it.”
Five minutes later, the response came.
“Boss…”
Dominic heard something in Marcus’s voice.
“What?”
“Daniel is not at his house.”
“Where is he?”
Silence.
Then Marcus answered:
“The airport.”
Dominic’s expression changed.
“Flight?”
“He was preparing to leave.”
“Where?”
Marcus hesitated.
“Switzerland.”
Dominic looked at the letter.
The warning.
The hidden betrayal.
Everything.
“Bring him back.”
“Alive?”
Dominic looked at the family portraits surrounding him.
At generations of people who lied.
At a life built on secrets.
“Yes.”
A pause.
“Alive.”
Then Dominic added:
“But don’t let him know I’m coming.”
Two hours later, Dominic stood at the private airport.
Rain fell against the runway.
Daniel was beside a small aircraft.
A suitcase in his hand.
He looked older than Dominic remembered.
Tired.
Like a man who had carried a secret too long.
When he saw Dominic step out of the vehicle, his face changed.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
As if he had expected this day.
“You found out.”
Dominic stopped.
“You knew I would.”
Daniel lowered his head.
“Yes.”
The guards surrounded him.
Dominic walked closer.
“Tell me one thing.”
Daniel looked up.
“Were you ever loyal to me?”
The question hurt more than an accusation.
Daniel swallowed.
“Yes.”
Dominic’s eyes narrowed.
“Then why run?”
Daniel looked toward the dark sky.
“Because I knew what would happen when you learned the truth.”
“What truth?”
Daniel’s voice became quiet.
“The person who started this war…”
A pause.
“…is still inside your mansion.”
Dominic stared.
“Who?”
Daniel looked at him.
And said the words that changed everything.
“The person sleeping beside Mia.”
Dominic froze.
“What?”
Daniel continued:
“Harper.”
The rain seemed to stop.
For one impossible moment, Dominic thought he had misunderstood.
Then Daniel whispered:
“The child is not who you think she is.”
Dominic’s expression turned cold.
Because after everything he had discovered…
After every betrayal…
After every lie…
The one person he never questioned…
May you like
Was a four-year-old girl.
And now someone was telling him she was the center of it all.
