Chapter 1: The Man Behind the Smile

Dominic Vale had built his empire on one simple rule.
Never trust a person who had never been tested.
For seventeen years, Nathan Cross had passed every test.
He had stood beside Dominic when enemies came with guns.
He had sat across from him during negotiations where one wrong sentence could start a war.
He had taken a bullet meant for Dominic and carried the scar on his shoulder like a badge of loyalty.
Nathan was not just an adviser.
He was family.
Or at least, that was what Dominic had believed.
Now, standing inside the cold wine cellar beneath his own mansion, Dominic stared at the man who might have destroyed everything he had built.
The room was silent except for Mia’s weak breathing and Harper’s quiet sobs.
Medical staff rushed into the cellar moments later. Dominic’s guards had already called the emergency team the second they saw Mia’s condition.
But Dominic did not move.
He stood there watching Nathan.
Waiting.
Because the most dangerous enemies were never the ones who screamed.
They were the ones who smiled.
“Dom,” Nathan said slowly, raising both hands slightly. “You’re looking at me like I did something.”
Dominic’s expression did not change.
“That’s because I’m trying to understand what I’m looking at.”
Nathan frowned.
“You think I locked her down there?”
Nobody spoke.
The silence was enough.
Nathan looked around the room, almost offended.
“You know me better than this.”
Dominic finally turned away.
“Do I?”
The two words landed harder than any accusation.
Nathan’s jaw tightened.
“After everything we’ve been through?”
Dominic looked back at him.
“That’s exactly why I’m asking.”
A paramedic walked past them carrying medical equipment.
“Sir, we need space.”
Dominic stepped aside.
But his eyes never left Nathan.
Mia was taken upstairs.
Harper refused to leave her side.
The little girl held onto her mother’s hand while doctors examined the injuries caused by three days of confinement.
Dominic watched from the doorway.
He had faced armed men without hesitation.
He had walked into rooms where everyone wanted him dead.
But seeing a four-year-old child sleeping beside her injured mother broke something inside him that bullets never could.
Because Harper had trusted him.
And he had failed her.
A quiet voice came from behind.
“She’s stronger than people realize.”
Dominic turned.
Nathan stood there.
For a moment, Dominic saw the old Nathan.
The man who had stood beside him for years.
The man who had laughed with him.
The man who knew every secret Dominic carried.
Then Dominic remembered the locked cellar.
“Leave.”
Nathan blinked.
“What?”
“You heard me.”
“Dom, you’re making a mistake.”
Dominic walked closer.
The room suddenly felt smaller.
“I made a mistake three years ago.”
Nathan’s eyes narrowed.
“What are you talking about?”
“I let people into my home without knowing who they really were.”
Nathan’s face hardened.
“You’re accusing me?”
“I’m investigating you.”
A dangerous silence followed.
Nathan lowered his voice.
“Be careful.”
Dominic almost smiled.
Not because it was funny.
Because those words confirmed something.
The old Nathan would never warn him.
The old Nathan would prove his innocence.
This Nathan was afraid.
“Where were you three nights ago?” Dominic asked.
Nathan answered immediately.
“Meeting investors.”
“Which investors?”
Nathan hesitated.
Only half a second.
But Dominic noticed.
“Why does that matter?”
“Because I asked.”
Nathan looked away.
“New York.”
“Hotel?”
“Dominic…”
“Hotel, Nathan.”
Nathan sighed.
“Vale Tower.”
Dominic nodded slowly.
“Interesting.”
“What?”
“You know I sold Vale Tower two months ago.”
The color drained slightly from Nathan’s face.
A tiny crack.
A small mistake.
But Dominic had spent his entire life finding cracks.
“You lied.”
Nathan recovered quickly.
“I meant the old building.”
“There is no old building.”
Silence.
Dominic walked toward the window overlooking the estate.
The mansion stretched across the land like a kingdom.
His kingdom.
But tonight, it felt like a prison.
“How long?”
Nathan did not answer.
“How long have you been hiding things from me?”
“Nothing happened.”
“Someone kidnapped Mia inside my house.”
Nathan’s voice became sharper.
“And you think I did it?”
“I think someone did.”
Dominic turned.
“And you are the person who benefits the most.”
Nathan stared at him.
“Benefits?”
“Yes.”
Dominic counted on his fingers.
“Mia disappears.”
He raised another finger.
“Claire becomes my wife.”
Another.
“You gain complete access to my family assets.”
Another.
“You remove the only person who knows the daily operation of this estate.”
Nathan’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Dominic saw it.
Nathan stepped forward.
“You’re letting emotion cloud your judgment.”
“No.”
Dominic’s voice was quiet.
“I’m finally seeing clearly.”
Before Nathan could respond, Dominic’s phone rang.
It was Marcus.
Dominic answered.
“What did you find?”
Marcus sounded tense.
“Boss, we searched the cellar.”
“And?”
“There’s something you need to see.”
Dominic’s eyes moved toward Nathan.
“What?”
“A hidden camera.”
The room froze.
Nathan stopped breathing for a second.
Dominic noticed.
“Where?”
“Behind the wine racks.”
Marcus continued.
“It was recording the cellar.”
Dominic’s grip tightened around the phone.
“Send me the footage.”
A few seconds later, Marcus sent the file.
Dominic opened it.
The video was from three nights earlier.
The cellar appeared empty.
Then the door opened.
Claire Bennett walked inside.
Dominic felt his stomach turn.
His fiancée.
The woman he was supposed to marry.
She was not alone.
Nathan entered behind her.
They were talking.
The audio was damaged, but several words were clear.
“We don’t have much time.”
Nathan.
Then Claire answered.
“She’ll never tell him.”
Mia.
Dominic watched.
His own home.
His own people.
His own future wife.
Planning something together.
Then the final moment appeared.
Claire looked directly toward the camera.
Almost as if she knew it was there.
And she smiled.
Dominic closed the video.
His face became empty.
Cold.
The same face that made powerful men afraid.
“Find Claire.”
Marcus answered immediately.
“Yes, boss.”
“And Nathan?”
A pause.
“Do we bring him in?”
Dominic looked across the room.
Nathan was still standing there.
Still pretending.
Still wearing the mask of loyalty.
“No.”
Dominic’s voice was almost a whisper.
“Let him think he still has control.”
He ended the call.
Because Dominic Vale knew something important.
A wounded enemy was dangerous.
But an enemy who believed they had won?
They were careless.
And careless enemies revealed everything.
Upstairs, Harper slept beside her mother.
Downstairs, Dominic entered a war inside his own house.
A war where blood was not the greatest betrayal.
Trust was.

And Nathan Cross was about to discover that the man he betrayed was no longer searching for answers.
He was preparing revenge.
