Chapter 5: The Mother Who Returned From the Grave

For several seconds, Dominic Vale simply stared at the image.
The phone screen glowed in his hand.
A face he had not seen in fifteen years.
A face that belonged to a memory.
A face that belonged to a grave.
Elena Vale.
His mother.
The woman he had watched disappear beneath cold earth when he was twelve years old.
The woman whose voice he barely remembered because pain had slowly buried those memories.
The woman standing inside his mansion.
Alive.
Waiting.
Dominic felt something unfamiliar.
Not fear.
Not anger.
Something far more dangerous.
Confusion.
A man could fight an enemy.
A man could destroy a traitor.
But how could he fight a ghost?
“Boss?”
Marcus’s voice pulled him back.
Dominic looked up.
“Lock every exit.”
Marcus immediately reacted.
“All exits?”
“Yes.”
A pause.
“Anyone inside the mansion stays inside.”
Marcus understood.
This was no longer about Nathan.
No longer about Claire.
No longer about a kidnapped maid.
This was something much older.
Something that had been hiding beneath Dominic’s life since childhood.
Dominic returned upstairs alone.
He told his guards to stay back.
He needed to see her himself.
The hallway seemed longer than usual.
Every step felt heavier.
The mansion had always been his fortress.
A place where enemies could never reach him.
But now he realized something terrifying.
The enemy had never needed to enter.
They had always been inside.
At the end of the hallway stood the woman from the camera.
She wore a simple black dress.
Her gray hair was tied neatly behind her head.
She looked older.
But unmistakably familiar.
Elena Vale turned.
Their eyes met.
Neither spoke.
Then she smiled.
A gentle smile.
The same smile Dominic remembered from childhood.
That made it worse.
“You grew up.”
Her voice was exactly the same.
Dominic stopped several feet away.
“Don’t.”
The smile faded.
“Don’t what?”
“Don’t pretend.”
Elena looked hurt.
But Dominic noticed something.
The emotion arrived too perfectly.
Too quickly.
Just like Claire.
Just like Nathan.
“You think I’m lying.”
Dominic’s expression remained cold.
“My entire life has been built on lies.”
Silence.
“So forgive me if I don’t believe the woman who came back from the dead.”
Elena looked down.
“I knew this moment would come.”
“Did you?”
“Yes.”
“Then you knew I would hate you.”
A painful expression crossed her face.
“I knew you would feel betrayed.”
“No.”
Dominic stepped closer.
“I don’t feel betrayed.”
His voice lowered.
“I feel like I never knew anyone.”
That sentence hurt more than anger.
Elena looked away.
“Your father told you.”
Dominic froze.
“You knew he was alive?”
“Yes.”
The answer came immediately.
No hesitation.
That was worse.
“How long?”
“Since the beginning.”
Dominic stared at her.
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
“You let me mourn him.”
“Yes.”
“You let me believe I was alone.”
Elena’s eyes filled with tears.
“I was trying to protect you.”
Dominic laughed quietly.
“Everyone says that.”
A pause.
“Nathan said it.”
“Claire said it.”
He looked at her.
“Now you say it.”
Elena stepped closer.
“Dominic…”
“No.”
He raised his hand.
“You don’t get to call me that like nothing happened.”
Her expression changed.
For a moment, she looked like his mother again.
Not a mastermind.
Not a stranger.
Just a woman who had lost her son.
But Dominic refused to let that feeling control him.
“What happened fifteen years ago?”
Elena looked toward the window.
“The night your father disappeared.”
Dominic waited.
“Your father discovered someone inside the company was stealing money.”
“Nathan?”
“No.”
That surprised him.
“Who?”
Elena was silent.
Then:
“Your grandfather.”
Dominic frowned.
“My grandfather was dead.”
“Yes.”
Another impossible answer.
“He died before your father.”
Elena nodded.
“That is the official story.”
Dominic’s jaw tightened.
“Another lie.”
“Yes.”
The room felt colder.
“Then tell me the truth.”
Elena took a deep breath.
“Your grandfather didn’t die naturally.”
Dominic stared.
“He was murdered.”
“By who?”
Elena looked at him.
“Your uncle.”
The same answer his father gave.
Dominic felt a strange anger building.
“Then why hide?”
“Because after your uncle killed him, he tried to take control of everything.”
“And my father stopped him?”
“Yes.”
“What happened?”
Elena looked down.
“Your father was going to expose him.”
“But?”
“But he discovered your uncle had allies.”
“Who?”
Elena hesitated.
Dominic noticed.
“Who?”
“People inside the Vale organization.”
The answer was expected.
But still painful.
“Who?”
Elena whispered:
“Nathan’s father.”
Dominic went completely still.
Nathan’s father.
A man Dominic barely remembered.
A former employee of the Vale family.
Someone who disappeared shortly after Alessandro’s accident.
The connections were becoming clearer.
Nathan’s loyalty was never personal.
It was inherited.
A family debt.
A family revenge.
“What about Claire?”
Elena looked at him.
“She was never supposed to marry you.”
Dominic’s eyes darkened.
“What was she supposed to do?”
“Get close enough.”
“For what?”
“To give Nathan access.”
Dominic clenched his fist.
“And Mia?”
Elena’s expression changed.
“She found the records.”
“The old documents.”
“Yes.”
“And she was going to expose everything.”
“Yes.”
Dominic looked toward the staircase.
Harper.
Mia.
The people who had been caught in a war they never started.
“Why save me now?”
Elena looked surprised.
“What?”
“If you cared about protecting me…”
His voice became colder.
“Why wait fifteen years?”
Elena looked away.
“Because I was afraid.”
Dominic almost smiled.
“My mother was afraid?”
“Yes.”
“Of who?”
Elena answered quietly:
“Of you.”
The words shocked him.
“Me?”
“I knew that when you learned the truth…”
She looked into his eyes.
“You would destroy everyone involved.”
Dominic said nothing.
Because she was right.
That was exactly what he wanted to do.
Elena continued:
“You became just like your father.”
“My father?”
“Yes.”
A pause.
“And that frightened me.”
Dominic turned away.
“You disappeared to protect me.”
“Yes.”
“You hid while I built an empire.”
“Yes.”
“You watched Nathan stand beside me.”
“Yes.”
“And you watched Claire enter my life.”
Elena closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
Dominic’s voice became almost a whisper.
“Then you didn’t protect me.”
A tear fell down Elena’s face.
“You protected the secret.”
The words struck harder than any weapon.
For the first time, Elena had no answer.
Suddenly, the mansion lights went out.
Every light.
Every screen.
Everything.
Darkness swallowed the hallway.
Dominic immediately reached for his weapon.
“Elena.”
No answer.
He turned.
She was gone.
A sound came from the security room.
A scream.
Then gunfire.
Dominic ran.
The guards followed.
When they reached the room, they found Marcus on the floor.
Alive.
But injured.
The security monitors flickered.
One by one, the screens turned back on.
Every camera showed the same image.
The wine cellar.
The hidden room.
And inside it…
Alessandro Vale was gone.
On the screen appeared a message.
Not typed.
Written by hand.
A single sentence.
Your father was never the prisoner.
A second line appeared.
You were.
Dominic stared at the message.
Then another image appeared.
A photograph.
Old.
Fifteen years old.
It showed three people standing together.
Nathan.
Claire’s father Victor.
And Elena Vale.
But there was someone else.
Someone standing behind them.
Someone Dominic recognized immediately.
Someone he thought was dead.
His uncle.
Alive.
Dominic slowly lowered the phone.
The past was no longer buried.
May you like
It had been waiting.
And now it was coming for him.
